Just some down to earth guys, in their backyard, in their everyday clothes, no special effects, no auto tune, just jamming out & loving music ***PRODUCTION COST-BAG OF WEED*** 😁 Loved your reaction !!! The funny thing about this song, is that it isn't about a person at all, it is derived from an 18th-century marching cadence about a flint-lock musket with a black painted stock; the "bam-ba-lam" lyric referring to the sound of the gunfire.

This was a Prison Blues song, written and performed to establish a work rhythm, so the prisoners would not tire out too fast, and get more work done. Blues/Folk singer Leadbelly had served some time in prison for two separate murders that he did not commit. He was released both times on appeal. While in prison, he heard this Prison Blues song, and was inspired to record it in the recording studio. Leadbelly's estate owns the copyright to the song. When Ram Jam recorded the song, they recorded the first verse of the song, and added a new verse to the song.

This song is based on a military cadence from prior to civil war, where "Black Betty" was many things: in the first verse she is a musket that was very inaccurate due to lack of rifling, so the child (bullet) went wild (off target) and gone blind (the heavy smoke blocking vision after firing the weapon), 2nd verse refers to is alcoholic drink (in the 1700/1800's) of available for cheap to give to soldiers, and 3rd verse is an actual woman who "serviced" the soldiers at a local "men's club" in Alabama. "Bam a lam" is the reference sound of the musket firing and the beat of the singing cadence

I was raised in Ala and played this music in the 70s and 80s. Rehearsal was often visited by police when we cranked it up to 10!! Fortunately many of them were our biggest fans. If you take it into the yard, you expect a crowd to show before too long and they don't come empty-handed. We knew who black Betty was.

I haven't had a band move next door, but I lived in a place where this old grand dad, retired Crab trapper would start up a smoker at like 5AM and start smoking Mullet. Never seemed to tell anyone about it, just started putting fish on racks after having taken his boat out and netting them that night. . . The whole neighborhood started prepping for a street party, cooking food, buying beer, setting out tables. dragging stereos out of the living room into the yard . . I was 15 it was Amazing!!

@@watchbizmatik Incorrect. Birmingham didn't even exist until the 1870'S., long after the flintlock was obsolete. This is a song sung by black laborers as a "cadence" song. It was first recorded by famous bluesman "Lead Belly". Black Oak Arkansas revved it up some for the rock and roll version they recorded in the early 70's. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM-ZabOJlZO6iKc.html&ab_channel=SmithsonianFolkwaysRecordings Lead Belly is an American icon.

I happen to come across a story about a month ago in an old magazine that was being cleaned out of a 83 year old persons junk room and it was dated way back before I was borne which was 1952 so take what you will from this strange story. The original singer I think was a man named leadbelly had started singing this in a juke joint because he fell for a gal who always came to hear him but not to dance.Back then there was a speed type of drug called black betty which later like on the 60s or 70s became known as black beauty .But back in those days very few ever knew a thing about drugs or at least that's what everyone was led to think .Anyway he came across this from a country doctor (black )who used it for different reasons but he found it worked good for people who were getting older but still had to work or end up at whatever fate their lives were in the hands of whoever . The Powder helped give them energy and at the same time another form was being developed but it would actually make a person go blind which came to the part about having a child and damn thing gone blind .It was a child of the first or a branch off of it.Anyway the singer owned a war rifle by the same name. And because he couldn't say to much about if anything the drug which then was taken by the spoonful or a powder taken the same way after it was mixed. It all came back to the girl who would come and listen to him her name I think was Louise or close to that and he was trying to tell her through his song how she made him feel of course the drug gave him courage to do this because it said that she was like a beauty Queen and he looked like a bum that crawled from under a wood pile and didn't know for sure she even knew he was alive.Somehow he put all four things together without knowing how or why at the time and came up with this song .It said he did manage to take the girl out a few times till her daddy found out and then he found out she was only 15 or 16 .And from there he went on and she became a memory so he finished the song mainly for his self as a way to remember her and still not have it known out in the world. Now after hearing this I sure regret throwing that box of old magazine's away but then who knew .Life is strange to say the least.

Black Betty is an old blues song by Leadbelly recorded in the 1930s but before that it was a work song sung by chain gangs. The thing about Black Betty is you can keep making up your own lyrics. It can be about a woman, or a drug, or a gun, or a car. In this backyard rock and roll version, it’s definitely about a woman.

"What would I do" if a band was playing live next door to me? :D As long as they weren't disturbing the peace after midnight so people could get some sleep before they had to get up and go to work, I'd probably be outside in *my* backyard enjoying the music, if I liked the tunes. :)

It's actually a prison chant about a whip known as "black betty" Bam-a-lam is Alabama. I've also heard Black Betty is a type of moonshine that even Ben Franklin used to drink

Oh yeah? Thanks I didn’t know , I was too busy with Spirit, Grass Roots, John Mayall and bluesbreakers , Taj Mahal ,Mamas n Papas , It’s a Beautiful Day, The Yardbirds, damn there were so so many gifted artists back then. Now,... even the stuff I thought was fluff sounds cool, like Rare Earth, and Three Dog night. Jeez how blessed were we? Man oh man we had the best there may ever be. My first two concerts were George Harrison’s Dark Horse Tour and Jethro Tull’s Aqualung. I got to see Skynard before the crash. And I was singin’ bye bye miss American pie again when I went to see Stevie Ray Vaughn months before he went “Six Strings Down”. ( his brother Jimmy Tribute tune ) I sang it again. A sad day for this Texan. But thanks for the heads up on the singer info and give “Six Strings Down” a listen okay? you’ll like it.

Amazing reaction! Some sources claim the is derived from an 18th-century marching cadence about a flint-lock musket with a painted stock; the "bam-ba-lam" lyric referring to the sound of the gunfire.

I would grab some beer and buds and jump right over that fence! It’s based on a military march cadence about the bullet from an old black powder gun,I think from the 1930’s.Basically considered a one hit wonder band.If you would like to try another, spin”Play that funky music”by Black Cherry.
