In this one, we start getting into some of our treasures from our trip to Oregon! I selected a handful of nice Glass Butte obsidian including Borealis obsidian and silver sheen obsidian and feed them into the slab saw to see what we get! On top of that, we power up the scribe and start prepping some of our fossils from the Oregon Coast! I was so happy with our results! The fossils prepped beautifully, and I can not believe the color on some of our chunks of obsidian! I even selected a nice piece of green sheen to polish! We still have that fossil vertebrae to prep and a heap of sunstones to facet, so look forward to those videos coming soon! I hope you all enjoy, and I will see you next time!

One of my club members told me how he cuts obsidian, or determines to cut that is. Place the piece in a bowl or can type object with sand or kitty litter partially filling. Then put your piece in the holder, the base of litter or sand allows you to support while changing angles. You then have a light source directly above the piece, he was adamant on the light source being directly above, with light on move your piece until you get the best results, the base material should hold it in place, then take a marker and trace the piece using the can or bowl's edge as a guide! He said this will give you the direction to cut and produce the desired affect. I have yet to try this, he said it works very well for him. I thought I would throw this method out there, I know there are a few. Thank you Theo, Obsidian has become a passion, just love the stuff. On those pieces that the angle is off I suppose you could mount it to the correct angle?

Obsidian obsession? That explains a lot. Ever since I went to Davis Creek, I've had a fever. And the only cure is... Maybe I'll find it at Glass Butte in May. Davis creek has some phenomenal colors. My favorite so far is a neon purple. Can't wait to see what o find in Oregon.

Oh my gosh, that green-sheen though! And the borealis is gorgeous as well. I'm not as partial to the silver-sheen but it is pretty. That polished green-sheen will make a gorgeous cab, as will all the obsidian. And well done on the fossils too!

Obsidian is challenging. That's why I haven't "tried" to polish only 1 piece.

Wonderful work Theo. I enjoy listening to everyone's thought process on how and why they decide to slice their stones 'this way or that'. I always learn something from your videos.. so thanks!

I'd love to see you try and see if the obsidian that's so transparent will facet! I suspect you'll end up with something that looks like sparkly smoky quartz. I have faceted glass before (It's what I learned on) so it would be an interesting experiment.

I've been tumbling some obsidian from Glass Butte since August, a couple of pieces - perfect! Others, just the teeniest tiniest chips/cracks appearing at the very last stage. 🥺

I grind defects after every stage (OCD) 😁I still had some chipping during polish and burnishing. I’m going to try even less obsidian and more ceramic in my vibratory. Hopefully that’ll work out better.

That is some fantastic material! That borealis is such amazing material and the colors are so pretty! That and the rainbow are my favorite kinds of obsidian! They can be so beautiful! And your pieces were really pretty! And the cuts you made were awesome. You never really know whats inside of some of your pieces until you get them home and cut them! And the shells you prepped were awesome, but those bones! The end polish you did on them was so cool! And yes i think you should polish the ends of all the bones that have chalcedony now! You can see the cell structure so much better that way and it is gorgeous! ❤ Thank you Theo for that little bit of compilation Oregon trip materials!

Awesome video! Obsidian is about all I hound anymore. We hit Glass Buttes once every year for three days straight. So much material out there. You're doing a great job... PS: Get a few knapped into points or a knife blade...😎

Totally gorgeous. I’ll bet you were looking forward to this. I would be interested in seeing the bone under black light. You should do a show showing a black light viewing of your most reactive stuff.

Beautiful specimens. If Obsidian is called Borealis, then Labradorite should be called Nebulae

Great cuts. Obsidian is difficult even to tumble, and I don’t know why! The last big chunk was best. I hope you can rescue that purple pocket. You are a good artist. Maybe we can see the vertebrae in serial chapters. Thanks!

My wife and I agree with you. The last one was the best. On the bone, the glue they use for glass, wouldn't it fill the unde r cutting and polish up?

Hey, I've been watching your vids for a couple of months and enjoying the content very much! This is intended as constructive critique on video technique: some of the reflections from your light sources are detracting from image quality; I like when you hand light from the sides and the back! If your camera can handle it, it might be cool to reduce the overall lighting and highlight the spot lighting! Lastly, the closeups may work better with manual focus and you may be able to get even closer! 👍👍

Isn't it nice to be able to go out in nature and collect something, then cut and polish it to a finished piece? On the last piece with the "purple pocket" you should do a contour polish and expose all of the pink/purple color. You might have to skip over your 600 until you replace it because of the contamination. Are you doing all this Obsidian work in Preparation for Kyle's current challenge? I'm considering it, but haven't committed yet.

Question: Would you be able to super-glue a thin piece of wood to your clamp surfaces to hold the stones in place at the odd angles you have chosen? ~ Just wondering, because MT Rock Mom does that in Drogon.. It might be a matter of Size, Huge or tiny.. But dealing with weird angles..

Theo, I love your content. Quite often, I do not see the colors you do in the rock. You occasionally comment on the video not truly showing what you see. I just finally have to ask this. Do you check your white balance, when editing? Make sure all your lighting is the same type. Otherwise, getting the correct white balance can be ugly. Having the right setting can really improve your videos. Perhaps even allow us out here to see what colors you are seeing. Side note: I once did a hair salon shoot before a wedding. Ugh! Sunlight, incandescent, fluorescent...it was a nightmare in my editing app.

Hi Theo! Before I watch your show..I just want to ask, when you watch another show that you like, is your like counter seem to be on the same amount of likes no matter what show you watch? Mine is always on 679 likes before i click it. Is it just me or is something dodgy going on with the likes counter?? Cheers👍
