Owning a Trabant and a Wheego and STILL managing to have an even less reliable car? good lord
@DeathProductions2002 жыл бұрын
The wheego, a car that was made as a cheap rip off of a cheap rip off, of a already not reliable car. Vs a relatively decent production quality vehicle. And the coda managed to beat that. The Trabant at least can be dealt with basic tools (mostly) and honestly, you can fabricate half the parts if you really wanted, making it more reliable lmao

To be fair, the Wheego cheated by just not working at all anymore. Which means it will never overheat & the wheel bearings will not wear at all.

A trabant is fairly reliable tho right, not that much to go wrong
@Schmidt542 жыл бұрын
@@obbezwiers No. As a German, I looked a bit into the history of the Trabant. They were notoriously unreliable when they were even new from the factory. People had to tinker with them to get them running in a reliable way. They were simply engineered and built, but they had issues. People were upset about the quality but could not do anything. In a museum I saw a letter from a citizen who wrote to the GDR party all the things that were wrong with the car when it came new and attached an invoice for his own services so the car could actually run. Compared to the VW Beetle, they were crappy cars. But they were the only car that regular citizens could hope for, because pretty much only apparatchiks were able to procure Soviet cars. So they had to do. Despite the steel embargo. There are still some Trabis left that are driven, and they are nostalgia cars. They are explicitly not known for reliability. :D

@@MrDuncl Almost certainly. EVs have the potential to be more reliable than ICE vehicles but potentially being something isn't the same as actually being something. Tesla's batteries, motors, and drive trains are generally revered as the best of the best but other things that normal auto manufacturers got down Tesla screws up on. LEDs are usually overvolted as well which provides more light at the cost of more heat and a premature death. Most of the time the thing that actually fails isn't the actual LED but the driver behind/packaged with it.

Of the problems he listed, the only Coda-specific ones would seem to be the status monitor and the Econometer. The door and window issues are probably endemic to the original car and the result of cheap Chinese parts. The one that personally worries me is the rear wheel bearing (and the bearing and u-joint issues in general); I'm a bit concerned that the weight of the batteries may be stressing the bearings, etc. If this is the case then, hopefully, installing higher quality replacement parts is all that is necessary.

For all these small plastic parts like gears etc, that keep breaking and might not have replacement parts available, you should consider investing in a simple 3D printer. They don't cost much anymore and you will be able to replace so much badly made injection molded crap. Something like an Ender 3 or CR-10 should be the right one for you (easy to modify and cheap)

Can go from tinkering with wonky cars to tinkering with wonky printers~

@@FranNyan A wonky printer would be a Geeetech i3 Pro W^^ The Ender 3 gives quite decent quality prints even for beginners out of the box. But they have much more mods that can and should be made than e.g. a Prusa. They are fairly loud and their stock extruders have a low life expectancy.
@SovietDictator2 жыл бұрын
@@FranNyan To be fair, Jay Leno has spoken about the value of using 3D printing to replace bad plastic parts, talked on doing it to a 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Mercedes for the air conditioning knob. The knobs would have cost $500 each and he's able to print one for about five bucks. If it's good enough for Jay in a 2016 video, it's good enough for Robert in 2021, but let's be honest, Robert's more likely to make it out of wood.
@SianaGearz2 жыл бұрын
I have a 3D printer and yet for plastic gears, i'd rather just take the original gear and its pieces and make a copy from epoxy resin, i do that quite a bit and never had a Nylon gear replaced by an Epoxy one fail. I use 2K kneading silicone to quickly make a mould. I used to have 3D printed toothed idlers on my printer to better control the belt cogging, since rolling over a smooth idler stretches it unevenly depending on angle, but 2-3 years later, all the mechanically loaded pieces i made from a given batch of PLA cracked, including those. I do think PETG should hold up better, but i didn't exactly get the detail resolution out of it, it just behaves weird. ABS doesn't work for gears, no surface abrasion resistance, also it's a menace to get an actually successful print out of. No experience with HIPS and ASA as of yet. But i absolutely love my Geeetech i3 Pro W. Excellent electronics (though needed repair due to a well-hidden cold solder joint under bed connector out of all places, and degrading power input connector), made to be reprogrammed and modified. Junk in every single possible other regard, quite deliberately so. It's made to be fixed. The single highest quality tool shipped with it is a (potentially fake, but still pretty nice) Japanese-brand diamond file, intended to fix the laser cut wood frame wherever it's not made correctly. I also really like the pen that came with it. Geeetech A10 is supposed to be fairly nice, but then you might as well get an Ender 3 V2 which is much nicer yet.
@SchwachsinnProduzent2 жыл бұрын
@@SianaGearz For a good mold you still would have to have one part that is still in good enough shape to make a mold froim it. In a car where everything breaks, you may only have a single gear of a particular type and that may be teethless. So you could just print it and if that isn't strong enough (which it should be, but whatever) you could use that that to make the mold. Though the resin would be just as strong as an SLA print, which isn't stronger than most FDM prints either, so he should be more than fine with regular old ABS, ASA, PET, PETG, Nylon etc. PLA could be too heat sensitive for the inside of a car. I have a Geeetech i3 Pro W as well and I have to say, it is really bad compared to all my other machines. The frame just isn't as stiff and the part quality is often rather bad. The mainboard is nice though, but still just 8bit. The worst cost cutting measure was to not have one big piece for the top and bottom , but using the Z-axis leadscrew (which was horribly bent on mine) and the smooth rods to keep the fram from wobbling side ways. Which means it wobbled as hell. I learned a lot by designing fixes for it though (which I printed on my Ender 3^^). Nowadays these i3 clones just aren't worth buying new anymore. You can get them for basically the same prices as an original Ender 3 (which usually costs around 150€ + free shipping within a week (atleast here in Germany)). I feel he would love the Geeetech i3 Pro W, since he also loves his Trabant and all the other cars, but the Ender 3 with its superior frame is just a far better starting point. The community and therefore the mods are also far greater.

I’ve bought 4 Coda’s. Two just for parts. Now Have tons of spare parts. Sold one, The one I kept works fine with the larger battery. Water pump failure is the number one issue if you disassemble the water pump The impeller slides on the bushing and rubs the back of the house and the pump can’t rotate. The screw Hass to be put behind the trim on the rear door panel to pry it away from the door latch and lock rods.

Endearingly entertaining is what this channel is. Always a delight when KZfaq shows me that a new Aging Wheels video has been uploaded - and I can't do anything else until I've watched it. lol! We appreciate the efforts you put into each one Robert. :)

I remember seeing their setup at the LA auto show years ago. Truly a horrendously spartan car for what they wanted. Living in LA I saw four of these in the wild, which is impressive.

"What is this channel?" Amazing. This channel is amazing. And why is it amazing? The last part of the next (very long) sentence. Thanks for keeping your collection of clanking cantankerous nuts and bolts, broken CV joints and wheel bearings, bad battery packs and sketchy motor controllers, overbuilt and underused campers, half-finished but absolutely-still-in-progress bus-adjacent projects, and most importantly of all: You having fun working on things that make you laugh.

Weirdos fixing window regulators in cars I don’t know is my jam! I just watched a guy I don’t know in a country I don’t live in buy a motor home in a state I have no context for, fix it, drive it 8 hrs to his home to park it in his yard and then talk about it…for an 1hr 20mins. And I enjoyed it all. Keep up the work ya weirdo
