US is still in the consume as much as possible phase. No reason you could not retro fit. Running a generator for an hour to get 5 hours of silent cruising is a bargain.......if you use it enough, otherwise, just more green-washing.

Very well designed cruiser...I can see myself living aboard quite comfortably. however there are a few things I'd change.. the top of the cabin doors @5:40 looks like it could do some damage should you slip or fall on them...the middle seat next to the pilot chair @10:53 could use a rail about elbow height at the right ..that's a fairly high fall if a heavy sea pitched you to the right over the woodwork and for a boat with all that storage and ability to long distance cruise that fridge/freezer combo is too small..

Most of the yachts in the Hardy range barely can make 320NM. The largest 65ft can only do 550NM so I don't think it would be any more than 500NM at an optimistic guess. @@allandoyle1809 of course, though without any tests we can only go off the official specs for the 65DS which they've listed around 900km+ at an unknown speed If there's one thing I wished trawler manufacturers did, it's list a proper full and half-laden fuel consumption chart instead of 6 pages about the airy feel of the cabin etc. Only seen a handful of them do that, though it's so useful when they do.

Did they use the batteries from a BMW i3 as well? Seems like every electric boat has either the battery, or the battery an engine from an i3. Which makes me wonder where are the it's these people keep using for their boats. I imagine since BMW is such garbage,the cars fell apart and were junk but somehow the battery and engine were still good. Which is ironic because the engine in the car formthe ICE engines always fail and take out everything inthe engine bay with them.

Wouldnt the diesel running at 6knts be just as environmentally friendly as the generator running the hybrid system at 6 knts? I can see how for the first two hours when you leave the dock after having topped up the batteries from shore power, that could in theory be better for the environment. But once you go beyond those 12 nautical miles and need to turn on the generator top up the batteries again, then its hard to see much gain from the system. That hybrid system seems like a lot of added complication and cost for not much gain, unless you happen to have a use scenario where you are frequently going to take trips that are 12nm or less and don’t mind doing that at 6knts. Or am I missing something? Don’t get me wrong, I love the boat other than the hybrid aspect. I know thats the future and look forward to it, but i think this implementation shows that the technology just isn’t ripe yet for this sort of vessel.
@hugoandreae3785
@hugoandreae3785 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that it would use less fuel as it’s a smaller Diesel engine running at peak efficiency rather than a big Diesel engine running well below its peak efficiency. It’s also not good for the engine itself to run for long periods at low revs
@39mdg92
@39mdg92 2 жыл бұрын
on the contrary, the idea is excellent its execution is just not all the way. This boat needs two larger electric motors of about 100kW each, that would save a lot of space by not luggin that massive engine around, a larger generator, give up most of the flybridge for a solar panel deck, and then use all the space saved by getting rid of the engine for more batteries. as it is now it's just half way tranisitioned to electric drive, but running the generator for up to 6 knots is a lot more efficient than running the large engine at low revs, since the generator will always be running at it's maximum efficiency RPM, whilst the engine won't.
@Falney
@Falney 2 жыл бұрын
With the electric motor. If they were smart they would go one of 2 ways when using the engine. Either disengage the electric motor and let it free spin which is wasted potential energy, of use the spinning regenerate the batteries.

Lovely boat, but a very poor hybrid system. If you want a hybrid only Greenline does it properly. This looks cobbled together. On the Greenline system the motor doubles as the generator.

The problem then if one system fails, you lose the generator and the electric drive. It may look “cobbled together”, but simplicity is often undervalued.
