If any of my teachers would break down to almost tears at a sight of a problem, i'd just walk out. All i got from this episode was "its beautiful" n times > quickly brush over the actual explanation of why it is, and why/ how it facilitates the next steps. I suck at Sudoku, but i've seen them solve A LOT of episodes and i was able to keep up. If i was new, would have been interested in learning sudoku and would have clicked on the video based on the title of "Actually Teaches" , i'd have given up half way through, thinking its not for me :)) Unpopular opinion, don't take me to the stake pls. I'd love to see more puzzles like this one. Maybe not all the time, but at least occassionally. As a newer watcher to the channel, I really appreciate how educational this video was. Even though this one seemed pretty simple to Simon, I feel that the explainations on X-Wings and Swordfishes are really valuable to help people understand how you're solving the more complex puzzles.

Usually what I do (often after getting stuck) is select a digit and just start using highlighting to mark rows, columns, boxes, and cells that I've either already filled in or know cannot contain the digit I'm looking for, and then it becomes much easier to see the patterns. If I can find a set of X rows where the digit is locked into the same X columns in each row, it likewise has to be locked into those X rows in those columns, so I can go up and down those columns excluding it from all the other rows. The same applies if a set of X columns exists where it's locked into X rows.

If you didn't spot the swordfish like I didn't, this can be completed with 5 different x-wings! The 4s first, then 8s, 7s, 6s and 5s. I'd much rather have spotted the swordfish but I was impressed with myself for finding all these and my 43 minute solve :)

Your solve must've been similar to my solver's solve. My solver seeks X-Wings but not swordfishes. It found 4 X-Wings in the order you did (4s, 8s, 7s, 6s) after which it solved 5s as a hidden pair (R5's 6 and 7 are at R5C4 R5C7).

the way its build to gradually introduce more complex techniques is brilliant it starts with 1,2,3 which are elementary and easy , than you need to use the markings, and so on.. the fact it uses the number 4 to teach X-wing that involves 4 squares and 9 to teach swordfish that involves 9 squares is also a beautiful touch this not only teaches but only allows you to see where you stand in your current ability , where you should improve

An important thing to know about the Swordfish is the fact that it doesn't have to be 3 available spots in _every_ row (or column, respectively). Each row (or column) needs to have only TWO possible spots, as long as each row (or column) corresponds with at least 2 spots within the other 2 rows (or columns), and the corresponding spots do not necessarily have to be in the same row or column.

This sudoku is an excellent example of the use of Set Equivalence Theory. After the initial filling, we arrive at (6 minutes into the video) the actual starting point. Now, we colour the 1st, 4nd and 7th column blue and the 3rd, 4th and 9th row yellow. Both, Yellow and Blue contain three sets of the digits 1 to 9. Stripping away the mutual cells and cell with the same value, we arrive the difference in filling (unknown cells indicated by x): Yellow: 56677x Blue: 4xxxxx This implies that the Yellow x = 4 -> d8 = 4 It also implies that the five Blue unknown cells contain 56677. Having 5’s in b7 and i3 and a 6 in i9, these can easily be resolved: h7 = 7, h1 = 6, h4 = 5, e7 = 6 and e4 = 7. This is just too fantastic to be coincidental! The question is: what had the author in mind, an X-wing/Swordfish demonstration or a display of Set Equivalence Theory?

I have found another X-Wing while following. Around the 10:30 mark where you show the x-wing with the 8's, look at the middle box. Now the 8's can only be in the squares directly below 1, which creates another X-wing with the 8's in the middle left box. That puts the 8 in the middle-right box to the top left, and 6 below that, and so on. Thats how I proceeded without seeing the 9's X-wing :)

i got to the same stage at Mark at 5:42. it took me 20 minutes to solve from there as i didn't see the obvious x wing, and instead, did swordfishes on 6's and 7's which helped eliminate a few squares, and made some pretty colours in the box, but didn't actually get me anywhere productive. i thought 4's were useless, and only when i was finished with my pretty 6's and 7's did i check for x wing and swordfish's for 4's, and the puzzle was done in under 2 min's once i saw it. This video is really useful in showing to me how much faster i could have solved it if i look at the given numbers and look for those patterns directly!

I didn't get the swordfish until after. If you miss or ignore it, there's technically an X-wing on 7s (R6C5, R6C9, R7C5, R7C9). It ultimately lead the to same logic Simon used by giving me enough 7s to resolve column 8. It doesn't mess the swordfish logic up, and it's still useful afterwards (I needed it to finish). Long story short, there's a 3rd X-Wing that's a bit hidden if you find the swordfish first.

I learned and now understand the swordfish. The way a cracked the puzzle was finding four X-wings (4,6,7,8). Thank you for this GREAT video.

Amusingly I started this puzzle, got stumped because I couldn't find the x-wings, watched the video to the point Simon found the swordfish, said "ah that's how you do it", went back to the puzzle and immediately forgot how to solve it. I'm still proud of my ~20 min time anyway, even though a lot of it was just fiddling with number notation and backtracking XD

I did it without the swordfish, but spotting that swordfish probably would have made it easier. I did it with four x-wings and a hidden pair: 1. After placing all the ones, twos, and threes, start with the x-wing on fours in r3c1, r3c7, r9c1, r9c7 2. That gives you the 4 in r4c7 and the x-wing on eights in r3c4, r3c7, r4c4, r4c7 3. After placing the eight and 5 in box 9 you get an x-wing on sevens in r6c5, r6c9, r7c5, r7c9, which completes column 8 and places 6s in boxes 2 and 3 4. The 6s in boxes 2 and 3 force an x-wing on sixes in r6c2, r6c6, r7c2, r7c6 5. Now, look at row possibilities for row 5; the 6 and 7 x-wings interact to force a 67 pair into row 5. This 67 pair eliminates 5 from r5c4, and forces 5 into r8c4. This places 6 in box 8 and resolves the 6 x-wing; the puzzle pretty much falls apart from this point.

I did it without the Swordfish and without the X Wing (on purpose). Either I made a stupid mistake in between and it worked out... or Hidden Pair + Naked Single can solve the entire grid lol

This was also a great tutorial of using the highlighting to find the swordfish and xwing patterns. I’ve been resorting to filling in all possible digits once I get past all the obvious techniques. While it helps a bit to isolate these advanced patterns, it makes the grid really cluttered. The highlighting mitigates that a lot. Thanks for another great solve explanation :)

Thanks to watching this channel I was able to do this puzzle, where I used a number of X wings and even a swordfish to solve it! Time to watch you do it in a much simpler way!

Ah, I needed that breakdown of how to see it! I started to see some, but that gave a lot more clarity. 27:29 after stopping midway through to get help on the first 2 X-Wings. I also spotted the swordfish earlier, but I wasn't sure if it was one, so now I know how to see that better, too!

And seeing the video was atound 18 minutes, I thought we solved it in almost the same pace. But after watching you solve it, I see you spend like 15 minutes explaining the X-wing and the swordfish :'D

22:25 ... but after finding three X-wings (including one on 7s), I caved and ended up bifurcating once to make it to the end. I still have much to learn. Nice puzzle. EDIT: I primed myself to find X-wings, and ended up missing the swordfish that would have let me finish this logically.

Thanks for this video. It's much clearer to me than the app. I wish the app instructions had some sort of way to reduce some of the visual clutter. With everything pencil marked in it gets confusing.

25:54. Solved by identifying three X-Wings and finally a Swordfish on the 9s to crack the puzzle open. As this seemed difficult but approachable, I finally gave one puzzle a try

This puzzle works! At 16:12 I managed to spot yet another X-wing in rows 1 and 2 for the 8ths (assisted by the 68 pair in box 6). This made me able to spot where the 8 in box 2 should go.

Heh, i also coloured in the 4-X-Wing in green. :) There is actually another swordfish with sixes. You can spot it even before the 9-swordfish, for example at 4:20 of the video. It is not really helpful, but can you spot it anyway? Solution: Swordfish with sixes in columns 1, 4 and 7 (rows 4, 5 and 8). You can eliminate some sixes in rows 4, 5 and 8 but it won't get you anywhere.

I'd never watched anyone solve a Sudoku before or give names to the patterns that appear - I wouldn't have thought a Jellyfish would be helpful but it must be if it has a name! Unfortunately I didn't see one of the swordfish patterns, but a comment here pointed it out. Thanks for posting these and keep them coming - they are fabulous!!

Just started sudoku little less than a month ago. I do little booklets but I like watching this channel for the ones with interesting restrictions and less digits. So apparently I’ve been working these x wing and swordfish things out without pencil markings or any kind of coloring, and it’s been really hard on my brain lol.. probably a good mental workout, but this video certainly helped me organize the stuff in my head better.. might eventually start using a pencil and/or coloring for some of the incredibly difficult sudoku puzzles in my book. Otherwise I’m going to keep staring at puzzles half done for about 2 hours before I crack through one digit that pulls me a bit closer to the end. Thanks for the video as always!!

An excellent puzzle from Sam. As you say .. good teaching and practice material. I did it twice, just for practice. More please. On a side note, I do not live in UK, but I managed to find some videos of Sam on Countdown. Tremendous performances. It would be a treat to see Sam go head-to-head with Mark on a cryptic! (Wishing for the moon, I know!).

48 minutes, but I kind of bifurcated. I found a y-wing. Then I tried to find another but, going down the path to find a contradiction ended up solving the puzzle. I think I found a jellyfish, a swordfish, 2 x-wings, and a y-wing. one of those x-wings might have been a swordfish or jellyfish. Can't remember now. At one point to was going so fast, I said, "slow down so you don't make a mistake. Then I realized that 3 digits back, I had made a mistake transposing two digits. Good thing I stopped to slow down. When I started filling in the puzzle, I thought we were being pranked with all the digits going in. This was an extremely satisfying puzzle to solve. Absolutely first class. A lot of tricks, but very approachable. I kept looking for a simple coloring (which is one of my favorite techniques) but never found one.

Saw the title, immediately tried the solve, 21:48. Pretty happy with it, though I didn't spot the swordfish, I did it with with a 4-8-9 triple in the lower left corner. I did, however, find a couple of X-Wings which made me happy :) they're usually not easy for me to spot.
