** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Michael Lefkowitz is one of the most original constructors in the puzzle world and, yet again, he's come up with something that WILL confound your expectation. Things are not as they first appear!!!!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
sudokupad.app/yiaonocy5d
Rules:
Normal 6x6 sudoku rules apply. Each digit in a circle indicates how many times that digit appears in a circle in the puzzle. Digits strictly never appear more than once in a cage. Cells separated by an X sum to 10. Not all possible Xs are given. Grey lines are palindromes, i.e. digits equidistant from a grey line's center are always the same. Those are all the rules. Do not forget any of them.

In general using it in a normal XV puzzle could be very frustrating for the solver (especially having to scan an entire 9x9). Believe me, many have had the idea. But agreed it fits perfectly in a puzzle like this, since it defies expectations from the start

Well, this rule is not completely perfect. If you can put an X between cells that are diagonal to each other (like r5c1 and r4c2 in this puzzle) then positive constraint doesnt work very well.

@@palfly1864 Exactly. I used this trick a while ago in a puzzle I posted for testing but never published, and there were at least two major issues: (1) solvers were annoyed about doing a whole 9x9 puzzle only to come up against a gimmicky ending (2) since it was essentially a puzzle with a negative constraint (aside from the deadly pattern) that the solver didn't know about, it was a very constrained grid that required a bunch of extra clues to be solvable, which is a recipe for a puzzle that looks like a mess But yeah, completely agree that it's used masterfully here.

The 6+4 constraint led to what might be the most shocking final digit entries I've ever seen in a Sudoku. The realization that there are, in fact, no other 6+4 pairs in the grid, and that the rules imply that there must be, without strictly saying that.

I've been wanting to see a "not all possible (something) are given" as a global constraint demanding at least one more (something) than is marked. The hard thing is really making the discovered global constraint entertaining, and I think using X in a 6x6 is a brilliant solution to making it easy to check that there haven't been any other unmarked dominoes that obey it.

Brillant puzzle! This one made me burst out in laughter 😂 Gotta admire the creativity! I read the rules before looking at it, and when i opened it, it was clear something fishy is going on. So that just adds to it
@Stratelier
@Stratelier 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, most of the time we read the lack of a negative constraint simply as "don't assume a negative constraint exists" and not "there _is_ at least one XV specifically not given". Another hint that something was fishy: If you read the quadruple circle as a quadruple, it becomes impossible to place anything less than 8 in the upper arrow's circle because the entire line sees the quadruple forming an X-wing on 4s and 3s.

I did the same thing. You could argue that you can see a little bit of the gray line going into those cells, but I thought that since the digits weren't physically on the line, you couldn't assume that those two cells were part of a palindrome, since the phrasing of the rules specifically mentions digits and not cells. Possibly one of my favorite sudokus of all time :) Just the way in which one slowly realizes what is going on and then you use the weird implications of that to solve the puzzle

I didn't get the last rule. I was just at the end, reread all the rules and thought: "Hmm, there must be two solutions" Using the "not all" is brilliant

Did this one last week via James Sinclair, so delighted to see it featured on the channel. I think I had to restart twice before I fully understood the rules😂😂

This is my new favourite CtC video, got a good chortle from it! Even after seeing comments about not all possible Xs being given, I was amazed at how it neatly wrapped itself up!

the fact that such a work of art, so magnificent, could be constructed in such a tiny and "kind of easy?" puzzle tells you how much Michael Lefkowitz is a genius. just WOW!!

We're getting really meta with these sudokus now... and I'm loving it! Such a cool set of rules, and a very clever way to present them. I was a particular fan of the use of the negative constraint to disambiguate the end!

I'm literalminded, so I didn't have as much trouble as I might expect. But the one rule I didn't take literally until I realized a problem at the end was that "Not all possible Xs are given."

That was really funny. I had no problem with identifying the X and theb palindromes, and the circles, but was very slow to appreciate the digis in a cage, and then totally flummoxed by the deadly pattern at the end. Utterly brilliant and hillarious.
