In this video, I talk about potassium citrate which has been shown to reduce the risk of recurrence of calcium oxalate and uric acid kidney stones. I go over recent research looking at the citrate concentrations in different types of potassium citrate supplements that you can purchase online on Amazon.

I Googled "citrate mEq" Because the mEq unit didn't tell me much. PotassiumCitrate icomes in mg units, so that would be more useful to me.. Got a number of things, like this: "Generic: 5 mEq (540 mg), 10 mEq (1080 mg), 15 mEq (1620 mg)"

Dr. Chan-the potassium citrate supplement I purchased come in 99 mg per capsule. You mention 30-60 mEq daily but that would be 1,170-2,340 mg per day (11-24 capsules). Is that right? Seems high. Thanks!

It's capped by FDA at 100mg. Take it in powder form. Powder form is always cheap then capusules and has no peservatives.

My dose is 1080 mg three times a day, so 99 is pretty small. Have fun

@@brettquadt5050it’s not an RDA but potassium supplements in pill form are capped by the FDA at 99mg per pill. They do this because too much potassium can have an adverse effect on the kidneys if someone has kidney disease and since it is an electrolyte too much can also affect heart rhythm so they want to make it difficult to overdo it. If you are under the care of a physician then presumably they’ve evaluated your condition to safely prescribe higher values such as in Urocit.

I tried everything for my calcium oxalate stones, and nothing worked. I also noticed that my urine formed visible stones at room temperature if left in a jar overnight. After multiple trips to the emergency room and lithotripsy, I decided to try Garcinia Cambogia. I started taking Garcinia 6000 mg twice a day about a year ago and haven’t had any stones since then. My urine also no longer forms stones if left at room temperature!

Doc. I have right kidney stone 0.36cm at lower right calyx . My doctor gave me the medicine potassium citrate (15 mEq) and I took 2 tablets 3x a day. Doc, can't I overdose?

This is probably true, I took these as I was prescribed but ended up stop taking them because I didn’t need them anymore after my kidney stones? Idk? They just stopped refilling.

There are different kinds of potassium sold as supplements. Potassium Citrate is what is used for kidney stones & is prescribed in much higher doses. You might need to get blood work to see how much is needed. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist.

If you already have CKD stage 3, can u still take Potassium citrate? I took Moonstone and when had 24hr urine test, it did not increase my Citrate level high enough to prevent stones.
