Merle is a legend. He was in prison when Jonny cash preformed live there. It inspired Merle to go into music. Check out his song “send me back home” do the live version.

Merle Haggard was a singer/songwriter. He wrote for the working man. He wrote a song about Dolly Parton called, "Always wanting you." He had a crush on her. He had a hit with "Kentucky Gambler," which was written by Dolly Parton. Dolly recorded one of Merles' songs, but l can't remember which one it was.

@@ShawnToInspireReacts Got to keep in mind wages weren't what they are today. In 1972 I was pulling in $1.76/hour working 3 different jobs from 7am to 8pm 5 days a week as a Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor and an Asst. Coach for the swim team.

The line, "A buck was still silver back when the country was strong", is talking about the devaluing of the US dollar. Money doesn't have inherent value, it's value is only measured by how much of it is in circulation. That's why inflation happens because too much money is being spent. It's all because the government removed the limiters, or the gold standard, in which money had to be backed by gold in order to be printed.

He was making a reference when Coke was only a soda, rather than coke meaning cocaine. A joint betting a dangerous bar rather than Marijuana. Nixon lied in tv in regards to Watergate. Saying he wasn't a crook etc. It was seen as a turning point in politics. This song was a reference to life prior to the 1950s and 60s. Elvis and the Beatles brought in Rock n Roll, Vietnam etc.
