This Technique Causes A Nocturnal Deer Problem. Deer are not really a nocturnal animal. They feed 3,4,5 times a day. Sometimes habitat improvements we make causes more harm them good because we overthink it. Doing to much instead of keeping it simple will cause issues. Don't make this habitat mistake!

My observations through spotting scopes taught me that deer get up and move around alot during the day but they stay in the general area of non-disturbance. They do browse some but the idea of deer needing to eat several times a day is not backed up by evidence. They lie down and chew their cud and rest most of the day. I stick to the concept of making deer bed in one area and feed in another and hunt in between. I usually recommend "food trails" and small "pass through" plots that one can hunt. Theoretically does will use them to start feeding on their way to the destination feed, and leave lots of scent for bucks to follow - add licking branches and water just outside bedding if the property is set up that way and yer good. Not sure how that relates to nocturnal habits. Being in PA we know that bucks get real nocturnal soon as ATVs start buzzing around

Yes sir that’s all good ways to do it. The atv’s will absolutely do it for sure and just push the deer some place else. Deer browse as they move. I’m not saying it converts them to nocturnal 100 percent. I’m saying if you plant food right next to bedding they have no reason to leave. Deer naturally start feeding the hour or so before dark. That’s why it’s called “prime time” remove that planted food in the bedding area and like you said hunt the transition areas between that.

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors right. Im not crazy about acorns cuz in a flush year deer dont have to move to fèed. If a buck can get up and spend an hour feeding in his beedding area until dark...you never see him

I’m a fan of positioning small kill plots close to bedding. This is especially effective on smaller parcels that lack large destination type food sources. Those small kill plots promote daylight activity because of their close proximity to bedding, but they also act as staging areas before the deer leave for those larger destination feeding areas.

Great video and easy to understand! Do you think i need water holes if i already have three natural vernal pools holding water all year? And two are fairly large(40x50ft)

Thanks Kevin happy new year. 🎈 I would say it depends if you can hunt them natural water holes as they are. Are they in a good transition area that deer are already using? Or are they in a complete odd place away from deer movement? Also you can set up some cameras on this water holes to see if deer are actually using them. I tested this a while back and set up a camera next to a small pond maybe 20 yards wide and i put in a water hole 20 yards away. Water hole was just a 80 gallon tank. Not a single deer used the pond they all used the water hole I installed

I agree. Brows in bedding area and travel corridors like red twig and others. Why slow them down at bedding area unless your hunting it? Exception would be maybe the rut. Plant the goods where you want them to go!

i was thinking bout putting in a water hole here in north ga . i have a large spring creek running thru the property so never really thought much bout water however i know they had rather drink from water hole . do you think it might be worth an effort to put one in even tho its close to water ?

Nelson happy new year! I definitely think it would be worth it as long as where you put it is in a travel route to and from bedding. And as long as you can hunt it without spooking deer. I replied to someone earlier with a similar question. But I did a test I had a very small pond and I put in a water tank about 20 yards away. They never touched the pond but drank out the tank I installed lol. Pretty crazy. Picky animals

The problem with videos like this (and there’s lots of them) is that planting food plots in bedding areas should be a situational thing. I have 75 acres in northern Michigan. Almost no agriculture in the county. Just rolling oak forests and swamps. My neighbor to the south has an 80 acre, thick, nasty clear cut that the majority of my herd is bedding in. So why wouldn’t I put 5-6 acres of food right along that clear cut? There’s no high quality food for miles, the neighbor doesn’t hunt and I know for a fact where they’ll be feeding. Why would I create a 300-400 yard transition? Or plan to hunt a funnel that is only good for 10-15 days during the season?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Жыл бұрын
I didn’t say 300-400 yard transition lol. Along a clear cut may work. I’m talking about making a bedding area going in and cutting trails inside that bedding area and playing it with clover and such. There’s a lot of videos online with people doing it. It doesn’t make sense. You went flow through your property. Having that food planting directly in a bedding area causes the deer not to move much before dark. I’ve seen it over and over. Is it a situational thing could be. 99.999 percent of time doesn’t make sense.

Yeah I’ve seen some people talking about it on Facebook food plot groups and such. There’s some KZfaq videos as well where people are cutting trails out in bedding areas and planting clovers

@Whitetail obsession outdoors I believe it. Another thing I find amusing is "hidey hole food plots". I don't recommend those because deer won't exit the woods to eat on a plot or feeder if they don't have to.
@whitehondarider22
@whitehondarider22 Жыл бұрын
Most peopleI dont want the deer to exit the woods most people own the woods and dont own the farmers field where they line up and shoot anything that steps out of the woods and not to mention the violaters that drive around scanning fields and then during season trespass or road hunt, if im trying to grow mature bucks in heavily pressured areas then those bucks need to stay in the woods eating my hidey hole food plot

Well covers a must, but if you want to kill big deer stay off your property till you I ready to go kill him. Can't use your property everyday and expect daytime movement. Don't need an expert telling you how to do it you just need common sense.
