To avoid having to make marks on the chuck, check the manual to see how many teeth are in the 1:8 gear (in the last gear stage) on your lathe. If that number is divisible by six, you can turn off the lathe motor and lock the angle with just the last gear shifter. On lathes of this size, the last gear is often made with 24 teeth, just so that the gear can be used as an emergency divider after 15 degrees.

Not taught in schools or indeed poly techniques because we like our jobs. That contravenes H & S in so many ways.

Those techniques comes from very old fitters and turners, but just using the right tools, not like you have done here, and yes. It is taught at places like CTC and other institutions where you do appyship to qualify for fitter and turner. You will not have passed those tests by doing what you are doing here, because its not the right way, not precise at all. When working in the precision engineering environment one would want to use the right tool for the right job. This way would fail as the workpiece will not be up to standard. I can leave you with a note. Use the right tool, for the job, this is a industry standard rule, and refrain from your ways of working unsafe and inaccurate. The right way would be to set up a divider on the table of a milling machine, and use a rose cutter to cut it precisely. For the indents you may use a end mill. Slot drills are flat, and will not work fit this application. You are not clever if you make mistakes like these, you are only clever when you refrain from making these novice mistakes.
