I had an abacus too as a child, but it didn't make me able to do what she does. I think she's just really smart.

ಅಪೂರ್ವ (Apoorva in Kannada) is going to be a great inspiration to many many young kids including mine.. I am trying to teach my 10 year and 7 year olds mental math and it's fun when they get the answer with their own methods..

I'm days away from 69. And, although I was never as good as young Apoorva, I must say that in the past I was well above average at mental calculations. I'm a bit distressed to realize that I have become below average. And, I don't know whether it's an age related decline, or just that in recent decades I've gone into just not exercising the ability. Maybe a combination.

I feel that I am pointing out the obvious, but as the saying goes "the brain is a muscle and needs exercise". I've noticed a decline in my cognitive abilities recently, partly due to the fact I've not been using it, and I have what is called "chronic cluster headaches" which leaves me with a head full of fog. Plus the pain, wow, the pain. I'm on all sorts of pain killers and that isn't going to make life easier for the thinks, but I am making a concerted effort to take an hour a day to just do anything that challenges me. I've never been able to do well with mental arithmetic but I could easily understand the intricacies of most machines and mechanical systems and in most situations I would only need to be shown something once. So having lost those abilities I'm working hard towards getting them back before they're gone forever - if that's a possibility of course.

@@Bob-Jenkins painkillers create mental fog and are terrible for abstract thinking, I recommend trying micro dosing Psylocibin Mushrooms for your cluster headache, there is a strong medical evidence that it can help with this condition, I would recommend looking into it.
