Have the 3V recon scout, use it for everything, yard work, in the kitchen, fishing, hunting, take it along in the truck on a drive. Understand it not for everyone, it is for me. Ya talked about weight, I have a trailmaster too, recon scout is hands down a better choice.

Love mine, but the sheath SUCKS 😞. I had Kerry Brenden do a custom Kydex Sheet for me with both vertical and horizontal carry. And, a custom Fero Rod loop. It's my favorite combat, Bushcraft and all around knife 🔪. Good review Brother Man

I use the longer blade trailmaster and i love the finger choil for control cutting tasks, i would like sightly bigger choil, but it's ok, never have cut my finger on it.

I love my Trail Master so much that I got 2, one in O1, and the other is 3V! I do not own a Recon Scout yet. I have to disagree with your view on the uses and need for a scout or a trail master. Anytime i know that I will be trail blazing down a game trail, the TMaster is always in my hands whacking away. It is better than a machete because it can handle larger limbs. Another perfect use is when I am out harvesting and gathering fatwood, the trail master is a godsend because it allows quick test cuts. Making fires is also a breeze with the Trail master. The lond sharp spine and swedge allows for most effective and efficient scraping tool for fatwood or cedar bark! In addition the large size allows for quick chopping and batoning of dry heartwood for quick fires! Without the Trail master I would have to switch constantly between a machete, an axe or hatchet, and a medium-sized knife. Taking more time and effort!!! TheTrailmaster/recon scout has it uses and for some like myself, I absolutely find them invaluable!

@iruwild, ehat do think of the Modern Bowie? I like the CoS steel on my A1X/S1X much more than the VG1 San Mai lll which can be brittle and more prone to chipping. But I heard that the grip isn't very comfortable compared to the Trail Master. I can pick one up for around $500 new.

If cold steel made the recon scout handles like the Falkniven A1, Esse-6 or the SRK, would be a huge improvement.

Just got one from midway USA $199 plus they are doing s special for 25% off so $150. The thing about cold steel is pricing is all over the place one dealer is selling a knife for $300 and another dealer for $150 must look around for a decent price.

Used the original San Mai version out here in Pacific Northwest for many years, largest knife you will ever need to do what needs to be done. I never batoned it as I used a saddle hatchet and 2.5 lbs boys axe ( the most important tool) , the Trailmaster just got unnecessary for its size and extra weight however I never got the chance to use other steels for this model.

As cool as the Recon Scout is, there are a few things that concern me about it. I've see several videos demonstrating some fit & finish issues that are not acceptable. I have a CS Trail Master (San Mai III version), and the fit & finish is flawless! Another thing is that I don't really see where it fits into the overall menu. For a large knife CS have the Trail Master, and for the belt knife they have the 6 inch SRK. For what possible reason would one need something somewhere in between? There's no way I'd rather have a Recon Scout instead of either of the other two.

The 7.5.inch will be jack of all trades mastee of none. I'd rather get a trailmaster pair with something like a mora or a full flat 3.5 inch blade for game and kitchen tasks.

Too heavy? Its 9.5 ounces! Ive got folders that weigh more than that. Its super light to carry.

Looks good. I’d like to have a Bowie. Because. 😂 It’s actually a fighting knife - at least in my estimation - that can be used (in a pinch) as a Bushcraft Knife. Maybe a Survival Knife. I wish it had a full tang and removable Linen Micarta grips. The grip seems a bit thin. But overall… I like it. Oh, well.

@@otobotrecords it is. Not sure why I stated that it is not. What I wished to state is that it had an exposed pommel and removable Micarta grips. Sorry about that.

@@WDLC1911 It's all good, mate. I always thought the Recon Scout and Trail Master were considered full-tang, and I was unsure myself 😅. I'm also happy enough with the rat-tail of the SRK. And I like the Kray-Ex handle.

Not a full exposed tang which is unfortunate. But it is far better than a fake hollow tang like some premium $450 knives. I love my Trail masters. In some ways I am glad for the Griv ex , kray ex, kraton, or whatever the heck they are called now. It transmit less shock, provides better grip, and is more resilient.

@@samthai818 After my comment above I got my first Trail Master in CPM 3V. It's a heck of a knife! The handle and construction are phenomenal. I don't see where this knife could break or not be reliable in any situation. The big chunk of tough and wear resistant 3V is a nice bonus 😅.

Is this the perfect knife? I mean, it’s not to large, not too small, and it’s 3 v! It has a place to choke up, and, oh….. the hand guard 🤤😂 only problem I have personally would be, I wish it had an exposed tang… that’s the only problem, I believe.

@@Sp3rmWizrd He has no methodical approach whatsoever. He doesn't incorporate blade geometry, heat treatment and many other variables into these so called tests. He has no standard approach to any of the points he tries to prove. His "findings" are nil and the results of his videos are mere craptertainment.

@otobotrecords Sounds like you bought an overpriced knife lmao his tests aren't that deep bro they just show the limits of a knife being highly abused. Like his cold steel jungle machete video was genuinely interesting considering how cheap it was, it'll last a lifetime of hard use

The leather sheath is Great!! I hate those China-plastic-cheap sheaths. The sheath has to fit the Knife, in this case the hight End Knife.

That's not a choil it's to get a finger in front of the gaurd in case you need more leverage to remove knife from flesh. If it was a choil it would be half circle. Choils cut folks with big hands.💀

I disagree… According to the “Knife Encyclopedia” on the website of A.G. Russell Knives, a knife choil is “the cut-away area between the edge and the tang of a pocketknife blade and between the edge and the guard of a straight (aka fixed-blade) knife. The choil may or may not have enough space for a finger. Its true purpose is to allow the edge to be sharpened all the way to the tang in a pocketknife and to the end of the edge in others.” as you can see this definition addresses that area on both fix blades and folding knives.

Modern stainless steel like m390 and the other powdered metallurgy are almost always better than carbon steel in almost any application, they don’t require near as much maintenance, and they have much better edge retention
