Choose the right notes and you will build chord progressions and melody lines that mesh with it all perfectly. Pick the wrong ones and all you’ll get is a range of sound that’s either boring or bad.
In this lesson, I’m going to show you the best way for understanding a unique and sophisticated harmonic effect in music that’s called, “Secondary Dominant” chords.
Every musical key has a set group of notes that are diatonic (the established notes of a prescribed key). Diatonic notes can be harmonized into the key’s diatonic chord harmony. That harmony has a “Primary Dominant” chord that is built on the fifth step of Major and on seventh step of the Relative Minor.
Dominant chord sounds are scalable, so if a change in the Dominant harmony occurs, we call that change a “Secondary Dominant.” Given the fact that the Dominant 7 chord offers more resistance, you almost always find a way to offload some of a progressions weight by changing the step of the Dominant 7.
We’ll start the lesson with something called “Diatonic Harmony.” This is definitely a must know concept because it covers all the chords of a key. Once diatonic chord inclusion is known, the next step is changing different degrees over to Dominant 7 chords. We’ll also study how to build melody and soloing.
