I am testing out a new tool to see if it will be effective at cutting down poison oak. In the past I have cut it with a chainsaw. This tool should make it easier, faster and safer to get rid of poison oak. I have eliminated poison oak on some areas of my property. Cutting it down is not a quick fix. It will sprout back. Cutting it is the first stage in a long term strategy I use, which I will show in future videos. This tool is a Stihl FS 131 with angled hedge trimmer attachment. I don't know how it would work on poison ivy, we don't have poison ivy here.

As a kid, my dad, brother and me would fence our goats into areas that contained masses of poison oak and blackberries. Mostly PO. After a month or so, we’d move the enclosure to the next target patch. Worked well. This was in the coast range of CA outside of La Honda. Thanks for putting this video together. I shared it with a couple folks who need this trimmer.

Scythe with a BUSH BLADE might be a method to explore, certainly a lot quieter, not sure about the fuel Steak and Beer. I use a scythe to cut my small lawn in the early morning while the grass is wet, the silence is golden and it helps my golf swing.

I use the Greenworks hedge trimmer, but I have to stoop low and sweep it; I'll have to investigate a version with an extension handle like your new toy. Thumbs-up and enjoying the content. Since you need a tool for both small sapplings and stuff why not just get a clearing saw like Stihl Fs 460 C-EM K. This is in heavy use in finland in anything forestry management related and also we put the trimmer attachment on the end and boom now its a trimmer for around the house. Anyway glad you foumd something that works for your poison oak tho. Good video!

Ditto on the Kombi. I use the power scythe for the small diameter stuff, and the pole pruner (carefully near the dirt and rocks) for the larger, woody stuff that I can now see after the scythe. I’ve actually got the battery version of the Kombi (KMA 135), which lasts a surprisingly long time. With two batteries, I never have to wait as one charges in the time it takes to drain the other. Not as convenient when out in the bush like Michael is, but it works great for me when I’m closer to the house. I’ll probably pick up a gas version at some point for when I’m out in the back forty.

RE the rough running... Like with a new chain saw it needs to break in. After that adjust the valves every couple years (it's a mix 4 stroke, not a 2 stroke, and change the valve cover gasket each time), keep the air filter clean, check the spark arrestor (which will probably stay clean running it wide open all the time), and maybe throw a new spark plug in it ever few years. Maintain the cutter with Stihl Hedge Trimmer Blade Cleaner and grease it regularly and they are trouble free. Also, it needs a load on it when revved up or it starts to break up... kind of like how an MS661 doesn't run well when cutting small wood but sings in the big stuff!

Excellent video, thank you. That attachment is great: I have been using an FS460 for brush clearing but it's major overkill for most of what I deal with, and a regular weedwhacker is a big underpowered, and I don't want to constantly extend the line (Poison Ivy/Oak hits me hard). I have Stihl Kombi. It is actually the same tool but below the left hand handle it can be devided to two parts. The motor part and the tool part. I have the same tool you have and also the shorter version of that. The shorter one is not so heavy and it is not as clumsy as the longer one. Anyway both versions ate much cleaner for what comes to the tiny bits flying all over to your trousers, shirt and even to your face. I also have a 12 inch chain saw tool for cutting branches though I quite often use it to cut smaller trees because I don’t have to put on the safety gear except the helmet. I think Stihl Kombi is one of the best multi purpose tools.

I hadn't considered using my FS130 and hedge cutter attachment in that manner... I'd only used it for pruning bushes. I had defaulted to using brush/sapling cutting blades on the FS130 for tasks like cleaning up plants like those shown in the video. There is about a 1/4 acre that is going to face the wrath of my FS130 and hedge cutter this week!

@@WilsonForestLands I found that the Stihl brush blade that can be sharpened with a round file is better than the “saw” blade that needs to be sharpened by machine. I recommend getting the proper guard also as it lets you anchor the cutter against the larger brush/saplings… Using the guard makes it less prone to kick back and is easier to control. It’s an effective combo and easier on the back than a chain saw for such work!

Looks like a great tool but that engine sounds more like a ryobi than a stihl. No doubt it will be fine however. I hate battery tools in general as I don’t think they are worth the added expensive but if you ever decide to get one of those saw blade trimmers I can recommend the dewalt flex volt that has the universal attachment mount. Think they make two versions so you have to be careful getting the right one but it’s pretty good. Ton of power and battery lasts long enough for most small jobs. Way more power than any gas trimmer I had. 👍🏼

I have the same system and it runs the same. From what i can see/hear/read about that motor is that it has a rev-limiter. When you run it full throttle it hits the limiter and creates the weird sound/vibration. If you let off the throttle just a tad, then that goes away since the limiter is not restricting the motor...

If you’d start collecting some battery tools you could just swap your batteries to your different tools and not have to breathe in that stinky gas/oil all the time, save your ears a bit too. I was up clearing trees off Forest Service Roads with my battery saw yesterday. Downed trees all over! Recharged batteries with my solar panel up in the woods. Husky has a battery power head with a hedge trimmer attachment, you can swap to a pole-saw attachment (and others) too.
