Come on a walking tour around Central City, Colorado, the town that was called "The Richest Square Mile on Earth." Central City, Colorado is a historic mining settlement founded in 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and came to be known as the "Richest Square Mile on Earth". Central City and the adjacent city of Black Hawk form the federally designated Central City/Black Hawk Historic District. Casino gambling was introduced in both towns in the early 1990's, but had more success in Black Hawk (which has 15 casinos) than in Central City (which has 6 casinos), partly because the main road to Central City passed through Black Hawk, tempting gamblers to stop in Black Hawk instead. To compete with Black Hawk, Central City has recently eliminated height restrictions for building on undeveloped land. Buildings were previously limited to heights of 53 feet, so as not to overshadow the town's historic buildings. . #Colorado #centralcity #tour

Living in the San Francisco Bay area where housing is soo expensive I had to see "the riches square mile on earth" Not disappointed. Old mining towns "rock"! Central City is a real charming gem. All the best to you

Did you see that short that I posted of somebody swimming in the San Francisco Bay? Yes, at one time it was the richest square mile. Back in the 1800s

We love to explore the gold rush areas. this was the first time I had heard of Central City and it really looks like the kind of area we love to visit. We love seeing those types of towns. Didn't realize there was so many casinos in that area. The pandemic really took a toll on some of the old tourist towns. So wonderful to see.

Central City is awesome. I lived there for a couple years. The whole Denver metro area was amazing and the mountains are just beautiful. Central City parkway is one of my all time favorite roads to cruise through during the summer with the windows down and some tunes going.

Fantastic tour. What a fascinating old mining town. Amazing how times change and went from being so rich to what it is today. I love all of the buildings, the streets give that old fashioned vibe. Too bad a lot of businesses didn’t make it. Of course the casinos do haha. Seeing in those buildings is really interesting. So cool to see where they weighed the gold too. Cool they have a historical society. You always find the most interesting places! Thanks for sharing, sorry we are so behind!

The pandemic did not close all of the shut businesses in Central City. Gambling caused all of the businesses to leave. The taxes were so high in Central City after they brought in gambling that the original businesses couldn't continue. So they closed up their stores and a lot of them are still vacant. The original highway went through Black Hawk first so their gambling businesses prospered and Central City suffered.

Very cool historic town. It is sad to see some of the businesses gone and buildings sitting empty. But it is cool to see the historic pictures along the way of what the area used to look like.
