In Paris, the RER C does the same thing. There are trips between Versailles Château and Versailles Chantiers via Paris and all the south of the metro area. It takes 2 hours to do the big circle even if the stations are only 12 min apart by foot. Crazy Great video as always!

It’s VICK towards Versailles Chateau Rive Gauche and CIME towards Versailles Chantiers at the closest point it’s only 100 meter between them and there is a point on av. de Sceaux where you can see both ends of the line

Somewhat reminds me of something in Chicago. Montrose (Blue Line) and Kimball (Brown Line) which are two miles apart. There is a bus but if you wanted to do it just on the L it becomes an 80 minute journey.

There used to be a far worse trip in NYC--before the E train was extended to Jamaica Center, you could get on the F train at Parsons Avenue, take probably 2 hours, make 3 transfers-F to G, G to L, L to J/Z, and end up 5 blocks away from where you started at Parsons Blvd.

Fellow British railfan and youtuber Nick Badley would say "It's time for another pointless journey." He has done several trips like this (although requiring a change) to travel sometimes from one station's upper level to the lower level, meaning after about 2 hours and 2 train changes he was 1 staircase away from the start.

The Paris RER has the same thing, where you have RER C trains making a huge 2-hour loop from Versailles-Chantiers to Versailles-Château-Rive Gauche, which you can join in 10 minutes bby foot

Not that anybody cares, but I rode it from Jefferson Station to Carpenter and back last week. And with the Senior Pass, it is free! That's why I love Septa - it's goes everywhere, and it's free for me.

This is the case where there's gaps in rules and regs that cause an odd sort of dis-synergy. The parking lot would have shown up after the station was built. So, when they built the parking lot, they had to put in handicapped spaces to satisfy the ADA requirement (and probably something that was on the local ordinance list) but the station itself is grandfathered in to not having to make any meaningful accessibility upgrades until they do a full renovation.

Another favorite SEPTA run of mine was pre-pandemic when they had one train that ran from West Trenton to Trenton. I once caught video of it enroute somewhere on the West Trenton side, then drove across (in horrible traffic) to the Trenton side and caught video of it again when it got up there. Posted it somewhere on my channel. 😊

Closest thing we have nowadays is the M train in NYC. From Forest Hills to Metropolitan Ave. You can simply take a bus between those 2 areas instead of spending an hour going around in a bend on the M train. Though, there is a section of the M train that is curently being repaired right now.

Hungary has a long distance InterCity train between Budapest-East to Budapest-West and vice versa. The two stations are only 1.8 miles from each other, but this train takes over 6 hours (400-ish miles approximately) traveling through the Eastern half of the country connecting major cities to the capital. This line is known as "Circle InterCity". It even has a restaurant/premium car and bicycle car. It's usually full, it's one of the most crucial lines in the country.

One great place to eat is at McNally's Tavern on Germantown Avenue upstairs from the Chestnut Hill West Station. Been there since 1921 their signature sandwich is the Schmitter. Has nothing to do with Phillies slugger Mike Schmidt. It was a favorite of a regular customer who'd wash it down with a Schmidt's Beer, a defunct local brew. It's in a green building about a half block from the station entrance. Closed Mon. and Tues.

I want *Miles in Transit* to ride the Market Street subway/El to 69th Street, then ride a trolley to Media, walk to Secane. Ride regional rail to Norristown (including a transfer in Center City). Ride route-100 to 69th Street. ride M-F line back to Center City. I did that some years ago (about 1991), I needed to change to a bus at Springfield Mall because I-476 was being built through the trolly route.

It's so nice having two stations the old Pennsylvania and Reading Lines within 1/4 mile as they give me options to come and go based upon how late I sleep in or stay at the office. I do miss the ten trip tickets. SEPTA finally succeeded in making a regional rail system feel like a glorified subway / elevated line

The Washington Metro Red Line is somewhat similar. The map makes it look like the northern terminals are far apart. However, Glenmont is only 5 miles away from North Bethesda (on the Shady Grove end of the Red Line).

Another cool little journey! Here's something I always wondered regarding some of the station names: Suburban Station is located nowhere near any of the suburbs. Why not just call it Center City Philadelphia Station or similar? Market East could be called Chinatown/Fashion District which would be more accurate than Jefferson which namesake the hospital is several blocks away.

I think they meant "suburban" in the sense of "not between cities." Like "this is a station for trains that only serve the suburbs of Philadelphia" (30th Street would be the one for trips between cities)

@@MilesinTransit YES, trains to the suburbs -- as opposed to the inter-city railroad trains from 30th Street, or the old Pennsylvania RR Broad Street Station. Did you know that the city blocks with the Penn Center office buildings had been full of railroad tracks to Broad Street Station.

Somehow I'm loving watching this channel! I use to take the SEPTA line into Philly. Once, I fell asleep and ended up in the train yard! Like no one woke me up at the last stop! It was weird. Good thing I was just going home.. not to work, you know? When the train was down ( once ) they diverted us to do the bus for transit. It was so weird! Transfers, etc. Getting from the Philly area up to the Edison, NJ area was quite a shlep! Took FOREVER!

If the Chestnut Hill Trolley would still run, you could have a even better trip. Chestnut Hill East to Chestnut Hill West and than with the trolley to Center City. But sadly no trolley service even if the tracks are present.

i am from here!! the mount airy and gravers stop were my childhood stations, and the st martins is right by my old high school. very beautiful stations but since the pandemic i think these are running way less often, and i wish they were faster

I remember these SEPTA Trains were "On-Time" 2X in 7 months!!! They can't run On-time because one Suburban Train is Late or a Travel issue, makes ALL the Other Trains Late! Seems they don't know how to go around a Delayed or Late Train. The system is outdated and so archaic, its beyond ridiculous. Hardly any of the SEPTA Officials even ride the trains, buses or trolleys and have no clue what the daily ridership experience is like. SEPTA need to see how Modern, Clean and Efficient Commuters Transportation Systems are around the globe. Even some "Developing Nations" outpace America's SEPTA System. That Organization needs New blood and Fresh ideas and a serious makeover from Top to Bottom!

3:58 - At the 'Budd plant', I think frames for automobiles were made. At a 'Budd plant' on Red Lion Road, the train car you are riding may have been built.

That was fun. Didn't realize they were through-routed. I've ridden from 30th Street to the Chelten Avenue Station a few times (years ago). Seeing this, I consider myself lucky I took the right line, as I see Germantown Station is quite a bit further from where I was going. I wonder how often people take the wrong line and are faced with a long walk midway on those routes. Me: That's very confusing that the East station is simply signed "Chestnut Hill Station" without a direction. Chestnut Hill East: "We were here first and we're not going to change it!" Chestnut Hill West: *checks Wikipedia* *hangs head in sorrow*

lol nice video I live across the street from Wister, and I gotta say this route is indeed probably the most roundabout way to get across Chestnut hill. Like I dunno for certain but, I'm pretty sure you can basically see the East and West stations from eachother. Nonetheless, I totally want to do this now! 😂

you can't see the 2 stations from each other, and you normally can't do this route because the chestnut hill east line usually turns into the trenton line once it goes through center city

The North Philadelphia Budd facility actually made automotive parts and closed in the 1990's, about a decade after their railcar plant in Red Lion closed. Body shells for the Silverliner IV's / Arrow II's and III's were made by a company called Avco, not Budd. It's a persistant forum rumor that Budd built the body shells for various GE products, but its been pretty definitively disproven. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avco

The sad thing about that caboose that is in the gardens along Amtrak in North Philadelphia is that it was restored in its original PRR paint scheme when it was first moved to that spot. Over time, vandals tagged it like crazy, and it was finally repainted into... well, what it is today. Only that has since been tagged as well.... we just can't have nice things!

@@MilesinTransit I forget who was responsible for the restoring of the caboose to PRR colors, but Conrail donated their time to put in a temporary switch and rail from the adjacent Delair Branch up to the site of where the caboose sits today to facilitate the move, then removed it all once it was completed. The people who tend the gardens there use it to store supplies and it makes for a great conversation piece. Just a shame the taggers had to ruin that hard work.

Good job! Althugh it will ne nice of you will leave your subtitle comments for a few more seconds. Are you planing to make a trip to Baltimore and check out their outdated lightrail that dosn't even connect to the 'metro' which both are not linked to the pen station? Shortly :show how much the system in Baltimore is very inconvient

chesnut hill east and west need better service so badly--the 23 is like the most heavily ridden bus in the city (rip trolley) and CHE even at peak is basically hourly its absurd

Better fare integration would help too - it's nuts that it costs $4.75 to take Regional Rail within the City of Philadelphia, not to mention it doesn't come with a free transfer.

Yeah! That's a fun one - one of the few SEPTA Regional Rail lines that genuinely gets into areas that could loosely be defined as "rural."

Is it sad that I just pause everything for a Miles video? I was in the middle of watching Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's and pause for Miles. Also are SEPTA key cards like debit cards, why do they have chips?

Yes, not out of the gate but you can set them up as a MasterCard Debit Card with value separate from the travel wallet

Yk what in toronto there's something called the Yonge University Spadina Line aka line 1 if you take it from Finch To Sheppard West you basically started at the same point
