I recently read an article written by hospice workers who said the number one regret that people have in their lives is not living their own authentic life in favor of playing it safe and going with the herd. Do what your gut tells you to do, enjoy the process, and don't worry about what the world thinks. That is success. That is living life well. This is me, whispering in your ear: go for it! ;-)

I’m glad to see you doing this. I really enjoy your work. Welcome to my world! :-) But one reality of being a fine art photographer is that you have to have the courage to create the work you truly believe in. Sometimes people are going to hate it. And that’s okay. Sometimes people are going to love it. And that’s not a time to get very satisfied. But stick to you vision over the long haul. That’s the secret. :-)

BTW, I have had prints from Print Space and White Wall (always excellent) but only for my own walls or when I knew a sale was guaranteed. For prints offered before buyers I moved to my own colour calibrated prints using a Canon Pro 10 printer and tbh the quality was pretty much indistinguishable, the only issue bring the size limits. For large prints info farm out the work.

Your enthusiasm is so infectious Alex. I’m gonna sound like a weird stalker of sorts when I say I have you to thank for igniting my interest to get back into photography, not only that but with my own project using an iPhone and even your style intrigued me enough to get me exploring. I hope you have success in selling your prints, you truly deserve it!! The next step for me is to concrete my style and direction in mono or colour and, more challenging, to create a few zines. The fact I work on an iPad to edit could cause problems with colour matching but hopefully it’ll be possible. Keep up the good work fella. It’s an enjoyable journey you share with us.

This is so interesting. The level of satisfaction we feel having accomplished our own art vs. delivering a commissioned work are very different. I’m an old graphic designer that have spent a large portion of my life producing artwork for specific needs and clients. It got its own level of satisfaction to deliver on demand but nothing compares with completing something that comes from within ourselves.

Smooth Matte or Baryta paper. I tried both on some studio prints and found the Matte to have such an elegant velvet finish (and less expensive too). Inkjet over traditional print wins. So much depth and presence. With your viewer base you will most likely do well. So much fun to see physical prints.

I’m really enjoying printing my photos too, and it has taught me a whole load of things. I do A3 and they are something else! So very different from screen shots or people swiping through their iPads. It’s not a cheap process and so far I only have 7 mounted and wrapped ready for sale. I’m hoping some will sell in the run up to Christmas but who knows. I’d like to sell them just to fund the cost of making a really large print even though my friends tell me people won’t have the wall space. Very cool. I can certainly understand just throwing random stuff out there. I'm certainly guilty of that. I think I have to do something that's for everyone, but I really need to focus on what's for me and my vision. I'm not saying that I want to stop taking the photos of the random stuff. I don't because I enjoy it. But I also know that I want to work toward something and I got some much needed inspiration from a couple of day trips to shoot over the weekend and this video of yours. Best of luck to you!

Alex managed to - at least in part - convert me from a pan man to a square. Although I realize that sometimes either the motive itself or the targeted presentation environment demands vertical format I never liked it and as far as square format was concerned, I had simply ignored it. Today, I look at square format as almost being a separate art form. On my run-of-the-mill days I do my 16:9 or 3:2 horizontals as usual. On my really creative day, now and again, I switch everything over to square. Much more demanding and almost a different world. Alex's square stuff is excellent. I wish him all the luck in the world and lots of fun looking at his prints. Square could however be a niche market.

Interesting, I was just visiting theprintspace earlier today and then this video pops up here on YT. They offer a free monitor calibration so I am going to go back next week and haul my Mac Mini and monitor down there for that service before deciding on a few test prints at a later date. There is something wonderful about seeing your photos as a quality print over viewing them on a monitor, or worse, seeing them on a tiny phone screen.

Those prints do look great, and I love your style of work. Good luck with the selling. (Watching this while fulfilling a customer's print-order as we speak!). Could you perhaps explain the term "Giclee"? It's a heavily used term and I'm not sure there's a common definition. Are we talking about an inkjet print on fine-art paper? (e.g Hahnemuele Cotton Rag), as opposed to a regular C-type that you might get from a lab? Also, for the iPhone pics (assuming it's a 12 megapixel phone) - 4000 px on the long edge - is the printer upscaling the image, or printing at less than 300 dpi resolution to get the larger sizes? I'm never sure which is the better approach.

Excellent Alex, couldn't agree more with the appearance of Giclée, for me it conveys the impact that I was looking for, possibly for my personal impression that the image is more artistic or graphic as opposed to an actual photographic process with photo paper. I know just how you feel! About a month or so ago, after several friends made "I'd hang that on my wall" noises at me, I chose two color images and two B&W and ordered 8X10 prints from one of the labs used by a photo website provider I was considering using. I was very pleased with the results, but not having wall space to hang them, I figured out my costs, added a profit percentage and offered them to my social media circle on a first to send me e-payment gets it basis. All four sold in under two hours, so I put my profit towards a one year subscription to that web provider and set up a storefront. If it proves unsustainable, and I'm fully aware that it might, at least I gave it a try. Thanks, as always, for your content.

Your images are really beautiful I love the compositions. It would be hard to make them look cheap. As far as paper choices go, I find that the matte surface papers do look amazing when you print on them but the quality that you love about them is completely covered up when you put glass in front of it. It does help if you use anti-reflective glass but it is not the same as an unprotected image. There's going to be some loss you might choose to just spray them and leave them unglazed. Depends on what kind of compromise you want to make. Also I think you'll be a lot happier when you start printing your own images. Then you will really get what you want
