This TYCO shark nose is another locomotive which my friend acquired for free. This engine does run however not terribly well so today I attempt to fix it up and see if it can be made any better.

Nice old tyco. I have some GP20's locos and they are awesome and looks good. Of Course they dont run exactly flawless but i dont care. I m still a DC runner btw and proud of it.

Same here. All the N scale and what little HO I have are all DC. Not bothering with DCC can’t afford it.

We'll call it a wrap -- A "Rock Island" Wrap from the deli down on 3rd Ave. It runs a lot better now that it's been cleaned and greased. Love the 🦈nose locomotives. Thanks for sharing. 👍🎃👍

Dang all that steel wool must have looked like a scale lightning storm inside that motor. I swear that speed letter livery looked good on any locomotive but damn it's a real shame the real RI didn't have sharknose Baldwins.
@mercuryoak22 жыл бұрын
Wow that locomotive was really sluggish. I was thinking that it needed some Tim Hortons coffee eh? Lol but the best thing it needed is having Harrison take it apart clean it and do some maintenance on it . I'm surprised that ran weather everything in the drive system. Well I was in Blasdell New York yesterday I looked at my GPS I am about 60 miles from Toronto so tonight I look to the left and I can see the sky light lit up from Toronto Ontario and Saint Catherine is not that far away 30 something miles. Anyways another new life on a Tyco power torque thanks to smt mainline Serenity!

Of course you could rob another wheelset from a parts engine and put a flanged wheel in the middle too, it wouldn't look right but it would aid electrical pickup. You can also make one dual drive with a second power truck. I know someone who did that years ago and I guess they would really pull a ton of cars.

If you try some CRC 2-26 on your pickup wheels you might be amazed at how much it helps. I was operating on a friends layout with a P2K end cab switcher (so all wheels pick up) and it was being balky and stalling on clean track. My pal had some CRC 2-26 so WITH permission I serviced his loco. I ran the loco on a paper towel with the cleaner soaked in it. Once clean I put a little on the track; ran the loco across it to wet the wheels. Ran _perfect_ from then on #NuffSaid !

The Baldwin RF16A Sharknose was an upgraded Baldwin " Babyface " DR 4-4-15. The railroads hated the 👶 babyface look on the previous Baldwin cab units. Baldwin cab units looked great painted for New York Central, Pennsylvania & The Central Railroad of New Jersey ( Jersey Central ). With the exception of Missouri Pacific, no other railroad west of the Mississippi River bought Baldwin cab units. Chicago Rock Island & Pacific " The Rock " never had them.
@colbeausabre88422 жыл бұрын
Agreed. With the thick frame, I'd say it is supposed to represent a RF-16 and not a DR-4-4-1500. CRI&P never owned a Shark - Just PRR, NYC, B&O and EJ&E. Having said that, I do have a pair of brass HO A-B sets - one painted for the CNJ and the other for the LN&E. I upgraded them with can motors and DCC and had them custom painted.

Nice work as always, Harrison. I've actually repowered those with CD ROM motors, they're almost a drop in fit and they work great, that little pinion gear drops right on. In a pinch, the double gear one can replace the pinion by turning it inside out and removing the teeth. At one point, Tyco was the only one manufacturing C430s, C630s, GP20s and Baldwin Sharks. They weren't even available in brass. Us Boomers tend to repower them with modified Athearn mechanisms for greater pulling power and better running. The heads do turn when my garrish Chattanooga GP20 walks away with 35 cars. That fantasy Rock paint is so much snappier than the Rock Island "Bankruptcy Blue".
@SMTMainline2 жыл бұрын
I'd like to try using the CD motor trick.
@shaygetz522 жыл бұрын
@@SMTMainline They vary in size slightly, but most are a drop in fit when you clean out the guts of the old motor. I found some to even have a flywheel effect. I use silicone bath caulk as an adhesive and that pinion gear has always fit no matter the brand of motor.
@leverettrailfan54142 жыл бұрын
Now I'm curious about giving it a try. Seems like too cool a solution not to experiment with, I just need a Powertorque with a burnt out motor to experiment on. Shouldn't be too hard to find one of those!

Well done, Harrison! Definitely prefer the carbon pencil over the abrasive 'Brightboy' or similar track cleaning pad. The abrasion creates microscopic scratches on the surface, attracting humidity and oxidation. Regards, Roy.

(This was from your TGV model train video a few days ago)⚠️PLEASE READ!!! This took a while to even edit this comment!!!!!⚠️) Hello SMT I really need you to read this comment because I’ve been trying to figure out where to buy this train!! And also I liked this video because I love TGV trains and I’ve built a whole bunch of my own models!!!!! Also quick question I don’t remember witch train By the way congratulations on 40,000 subscribers! Also train I’m about to say I’m just asking where do you get this train and whats the name of the seller? the train I’m talking about I’m pretty sure is a rivarossi Dreyfus Hudson… where did you get that? Because I want to see what else you’re selling because I want to get some new model trains!… also where is the best place to get cheapest trains??? (please answer all these questions i’m sorry for so many things to read and so much Words!!!!) and I can’t wait to see your layout when it’s done by the way!! Loved the video to!! You would make my day if you actually answer these questions and keep up this best work Harrison!!!!! Sorry if this is an inipropriate comment if it is just please comment on this comment “I cannot answer that”

He got that Dreyfus Hudson at a hobby store called Larkspur line its in Canada. it is a rivarossi. Tgv train sets usually can be seen on eBay also the company is making a new model with DCCC ready or DCC equipped last I looked on hatton's website because I was looking up tgv myself to see if they still make them by that company. I'm not trying to be rude or anything but I'm also trying to help out. Also he doesn't sell anything.

What’s the price range on TGV? I got a Rivarossi yard goat locomotive and some assorted “junk-collection” grade rolling stock. I’m in Texas.. I bought someone else’s used collection of HO scale railroad tracks and items. But not sure what price ranges are going for? I might have a Crescent 🌙 Limited rivarossi locomotive and a Bachmann 0-6-0 with slope tender. I got a weird german made turnout… model railroading is too expensive for my tight budget.
@mercuryoak22 жыл бұрын
@@lawnmowermanTX I think it really depends because it's a vintage Jouf good maybe from probably $50 up to $100. Al hatten's website from United Kingdom it stated that on the fourth quarter of 2021 jouf it's going to come out with a new tgv that is going to cost £ 315 or $432.95. The new model is going to include a 21 pin socket DCC coach set track excetera. It really does depend on eBay because eBay is a sliding scale like myself I've gone to the flea market and found HO scale trains locomotive as little as five to $10 sometimes upwards to $75 for HO scale and the freight and Passenger cars can run from a dollar a piece for the freight cars and on the high side they can cost up to 15 to $20 if they're new mint in box. Really the worth of the train or trains isn't as high as everybody thinks however the play value as well as the fact that it works and runs just says it all. I'm from Connecticut myself and yes model railroading is an expensive hobby it just also depends on how much you really want to pay. Like I said it depends on how much you want to pay like I have some vintage Mantua Pacific steam engines one of them cost me $5 I invested some time and effort and a new cow catcher on the front of the pilot I also had a chassis wheelset motor excetera waiting to be put into a new shell after all that is said and done I probably invested in a $5 locomotive about $15 and it runs beautifully
