U2 has consistently the biggest rock band in the world for 37 years. Others have had their moments of being bigger and for a short period of time, but U2 keeps going. Just sold out 750,000 for 40 shows in Vegas

The "Edge" on guitar, is famous for his use of the "delay" pedal. (Strumming once, and it echoes the strum 3-4 times at a tempo you dial in) . By adding a little reverb it becomes very ethereal, and majestic. The effect coming into it's age, just as U2 were getting their feet on the world stage, it revolutionized their sound and took them from a popularity level of 2.5 to 9 (out of ten) in just the span of one or two singles released from this album.

Thank you for your reaction to the Joshua Tree album on Patreon this week. U2 was one of the groups I followed hard, from Joshua Tree through to the How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb album. I loved watching them make this perfect album, then explore all kinds of music, then come back... I haven't listened to them much in the last 10-15 years. Your reaction woke up my interest, and I've been playing their catalog, and loving it again. Thank you!

@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 2 ай бұрын
Phonetically, t's 'BAHN-oh'@@SalvoG Bon Voyage can be pronounced as either 'bahn' or almost 'bone' (the second is more correct) so not sure that's the best explanation. It means bonaox which is Latin for 'good voice'.
@michellestewart1600

I was in no way trying to shame or anything. He seemed confused about how to pronounce, and that's the easiest way I could explain. If you're not raised in the generation of U2, you wouldn't be sure. That's all.
@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 2 ай бұрын
I know you were trying to help. I was too. The 'bon' in 'bon voyage' is pronounced almost like 'bone' which would be wrong for Bono.Some Americans may say 'bawn voy-awj' but most people I've ever heard say it say it like 'bone voy-awj' so I think it's a confusing way to explain how Bono is pronounce. The best way to explain how something is pronounced is phonetically. In this case, that would be 'BAWN-oh' :)@@michellestewart1600

He, Bono came out with a book in the last couple of years or so and in it he talks about a lot of the songs and what they mean... heard it's good. Like the slow start to the song and then how it picks up later 👍 Like that more in songs then movies. But have watch a few movies with slow beginnings all the way through.

Bon-o. Try A Sort of Homecoming, Pride (In the Name of Love), and the eponymous The Unforgettable Fire. They're breathtaking, and Pride (view the Red Rocks live version) is one of the best songs in history. All of history. The Joshua Fire album is stunning - it was the very, VERY Irish U2 discovering the US and California for the first time.

I remember hearing this for the first time in 1987, it didn't sound like anything else... It was groundbreaking, the video was good too; mostly just Bono singing and all in black and white. I went and saw their show in Oakland that year, it was spectacular. They played for more than three hours, they sounded better live than on the album... My friends and I had seats, but the concert was in the stadium where the Raiders played; we went down to the field after the concert, and the grass over the entire football field had been mashed into a green paste by the crowd being so excited and moving so much, you couldn't see a single blade of grass left.

It's a bit funny how often people try to cover this when it's one of those songs that can't really be covered without either sounding like a two-penny copycat -- or doing something completely different with it. IMHO only Amy Lee and Scala & the Kolacny Brothers have truly succeeded in covering this well. And both went for a very different arrangement.

It's a shame that you start with the streaming top hit, not representative. You're totally missing the post punk first phase. Out Of Control, Electric Co, I Will Follow from the 1st album Boy, I Threw A Brick Through The Window from the 2nd and Sunday Bloody Sunday (worldwide rock radio hit; you heard it a year ago!!!), New's Years Day (UK Top Ten) from the first successful album (UK no.1) are just a few highlights and anything but relaxed. The entire Red Rocks 1983 concert in the Colorado Amphitheater with video/DVD is unique, full of energy, passion and fully integrated with the audience. Just keep driving.
