If it looks like a motorcycle, rides and handles like a motorcycle, then it's a motorcycle, correct? Well, not necessarily. Over the past years the modern personal mobility market has acquainted us with a good deal of unconventional transportation inventions - smart scooters, electric skateboards, monowheels, hoverboards - and surprisingly some of them managed to become popular among consumers.
We are closely following the changes in the world of electric commuting vehicles and are regularly making videos about latest innovations and add them here: • Electric motorcycles, ...
If you are following the news as much as we do, then you should have noticed a newly emerging class of electric commuting vehicles and is getting a lot of traction lately. The representatives of this class could be briefly described as a mix between classic mopeds and lightweight motorcycles of the 125cc class and an average electric bicycle.
These motorbike-inspired bicycles are usually equipped with 750 watt electric motors, have a pedal assist system with cadence sensors and a thumb throttle, in case you don't feel like pedaling at all; but in terms of looks they are very similar to a lightweight motorbike: they have knobby tires suitable for mud-terrain riding, a full suspension system with decent suspension forks in the front and long bench seats for comfortable commuting with a passenger.
In today's video we would like to discuss the news about the newest ebike model by an American manufacturer called Volcon ePowersports. For the 2023 model year they are bringing to the market their 'Brat' bike and we would like to see how it compares to other models in the market in terms of technical equipment, motor power, estimated riding range and, of course, the pricing.

Believe the weight is part of classification to motorcycle, not sure but maybe the case as with extreme speeds on 2 wheels, the weight needs to be of a standard weight from having bike frame go Airbourne when hitting them bumps or mini ramps on streets. Yes, you will take off if going around 40 plus mph on regular frame and parts. Speeds need weight to compensate center of gravity of not having the ride fly thru air after a bump.

I've been riding over 55 years - 25% as transportation to work (commuting), 75% recreation (toys) Here in the US, most folks use 4 wheeled vehicles for primary needs, unlike other countries where step thru scooters are prevalent... My Comment was based mostly on range and recharging limitations of all purely E-Vehicles. Thus the need for 'Hybrids' although many of these ebikes might be impossible to 'pedal' uphill because of their weight. At 73, I'm not into pushing vehicles at all.... Can you see my point?

For me on the appeal of an e bike, I like to have all my e bikes look more like a regular bike over a moped/ scooter/ motorcycle frames and makes. It is to keep the Police away from following me around to see if I break traffic laws. So far last 4 years, Ive yet been stopped but dozens of times the cops right beside me of their cars or on foot. Even passing me to stop a Sur Ron just 4o feet away as I always start peddling once cops see my presence.

I noticed that several of these bikes have rear derailleur gearing in combination with rear hub drives. These make no sense. They would only affect the power transmission when the bike is being pedaled, and no one is going to pedal these bikes! They are waaay too heavy, too much rolling resistance in the tires. As long as the electric motor is activated, the only gearing the motor sees are the gears inside the hub motor. Surprised no one else picked up on this.

@@carriebartkowiak I have a bike with pedal assist. It is a bike that weighed 23 lbs before I installed the bafang bbs02 ebike kit. It has 24 inch mb tires inflated to 65 psi. The bikes shown in this video weigh close to 100 lbs. the 20” tires are inflated to about 20 to 25 psi. HUGE rolling resistance. I also have an ebike with tires like these, so I know what I am talking about. The pedals are mostly there for show, believe me.
@johnw65
@johnw65 Жыл бұрын
I don't have an ebike yet but the low gear setting oughta help get the bike rolling, taking some load off the battery. Then the highest gear might help the battery going up hills or bucking headwinds? I shudder to think of peddling one of these things after the battery dies... lol
@lkj974
@lkj974 Жыл бұрын
@@johnw65 Electric motors have loads of torque and are very efficient at low speeds. You could step on your cranks to get your bike moving from a stop but it isn’t really necessary or helpful. Climbing hills is another matter, gears are very helpful there. Headwinds? I dreaded headwinds when riding a regular bike. E-bikes easily overcome the extra drag. You won’t be pedaling home bikes like the ones shown in this video, trust me. Even my older, lighter PAS e-bike needs to be in PAS 1 to be “neutral”. In addition to the greater weight of the e-bike, you are also working against the electrical motor. Some more sophisticated systems like the Bosch have a clutch which can take the motor offline (these are NOT hub systems) and eliminate that drag (or so I have heard). You could probably pedal a bike like that home. Otherwise, I wouldn’t count on doing that.

@@DanaTheInsane this one is $2800 and they do go up to astronomical costs..Again only rich people have money to throw away on these. Each state has its own laws as to what is or isn't street legal.

Some of these bikes are way over priced.. any Ebike with a motor less than 2000 watts regardless of the battery is a pure waste of money.. The best test is to try to start on a steep hill.. if not send it back.. junk..

I'm good that's a nice-looking bike but it basically looks exactly like the goat power bikes and therefore I'll stick with my motor goat and my power goat bites because they go up to 55 mph and this only goes up to what around 30 or 32 max? Thanks but no thanks I'll stick with my goat power bikes they look better and are faster

Most of these are overpriced junk with weak batteries and motors for what they are charging. Do some research, people. You can get a 1000 watt 48 volt 20 ah motor/battery ebike for $2,000 or less. At 750 watts and 13 to 15 ah these are ~$1200 bikes unless they have dual batteries. Know this: the American companies are simply buying chinese parts and selling them to you at huge markups. I've been searching Amazon, eBay and bikes sites for days, looking for something around $1,000 price point. Still haven't made my decision but none of these are good values.
