Scrolling Text can be a really useful feature in MANY different ways. #rpgmakermz #rpgmakermv #games #development #rpg #rpgmakerunite

IMO a better option is to just leave books around in different houses, temples, libraries, etc. that let the player read about the history of the world they're exploring.

This. "A book on the history of green dragons. Do you want to read it? Yes / No." Yes takes you into a few paragraphs of carefully chosen info on green dragons. No lets the player go and allows them to keep moving.

@kathycoleman4648 Maybe also use visual storytelling to e.g. make one of the side characters/party members be a knight who comments about how he tried to defeat a green dragon before.

visual story telling, using the world itself to tell the story and stuff is always the best option

These can still be good though especially for context of the beginning of the game which won't be addressed later. Personally, I think using both methods is the most interesting. Using this but leaving out certain details and later on you get more details later randomly throughout the story.

I've tried to put the lore in small bundles rather than large dumps. Learning the lore is also optional yet interacting with the lore and environment yields rewards.

I prefer this as well, I couldn't agree with this more.

@@runthemc I've even tried to make it so that interacting with the environment yields Xp much more effectively than random combat encounters. This is to reduce the need for grinding and to get the player to explore the lore.

That's actually an awesome idea! You get the best of both worlds in that scenario. Player learns about the game and gets rewarded by skipping the grind. I'm not sure if I've seen that in another game, I love it.

The only thing I use Scrolling Text for is Credits at the end.

Personally, I think a better option for adding lore to your rpg is to not only add books, but also include flavor text for items. It not only makes the items you have seem more interesting, but it also tells you a little bit more about the world. For example: the game I’m working on has the early SP recovery item, the soul tear, and in it’s description it says: “A rare, mana restoring material obtained only from when a soul sheds a tear” I have also seen people in the comments talking about adding books to areas, using visual storytelling, and also allowing the player to learn the lore at their own pace. Each of these ideas is fantastic advice and should be followed Though a big block of scrolling text can be boring to sit through, that doesn’t mean it can’t be used. It can be applied very well in a cutscene describing a past event

Is it possible to include scrolling only when clicking and a close button?

With plugins, absolutely. However, if you were going the plugin route there are plugins that would make your lore entries look WAY better than the Scrolling Text feature shown here. At base you can only adjust the scroll speed, no pause or close button. If you didn't want to use a plugin you could set the scroll speed to 2 and allow the player to fast forward at they're leisure. I would recommend a plugin or the Show Picture command if you want it to look really good.

I use RPG Maker MV and don't like how up in front of a double height wall tile the player movement default looks like he's unable to walk back against the wall. Instead player or Character looks like he walks on top of the wall. Game design is frigged up!!
