Take special note of the wording on the callout verse. It's not saying "Get out; there's no place for you here and there never will be." It's saying "You're hurt and afraid. You must change for the better, friend, because you can't keep being like this. We want to help you." Hate cannot defeat hate; only love can defeat hate.

Home Free took a lot of flack from people who basically self-identified as racists, fascists, nihilists, and bigots, and then got mad that HF was calling them racists, fascists, nihilists, and bigots. It was wild. But HF is better off without those fans.

When I see a comment or a song or whatever where someone says, "White people / women / Christians / etc. who do X upset / offend / hurt / etc. me because..." my first response is "Do I do X?" If I don't, then it's not about me. Still worth considering so I can avoid hurting someone, but I don't need to feel defensive. If I do do X, then I need to take some time to reflect. I still don't need to be defensive because this person is talking about a behavior -- not my particular subcategory of human being -- and how it makes them feel. I may conclude they're right and try to do better. I may conclude they're wrong or only partially right, but even then I might consider better communicating the next time I do X. You get the idea. What I *don't* do is assume they're complaining about all white people or women or whatever when they have specifically narrowed the category further than that. There are several categories of people in the song to which I don't belong. If you (in the generic sense, not you specifically) don't identify as both a mother and a father, then why would you think all the other labels are intended for you? The reaction completely mystified me. HF essentially said, "If you're a racist, we're calling you out on your crap," and 5000+ people went, "How dare you call me a racist!" It was utterly unhinged.

I think this song ties in beautifully with "Brothers in Arms." No matter who we are, we all have the right to express ourselves individually because we are granted that right as Americans. We are fools to make war on each other.
@patriciamcl54
@patriciamcl54 11 ай бұрын
In fact I think that the song is saying almost the opposite - that it doesn't matter what country you belong to. Not everything is about America! And Brothers in Arms is far from patriotic - what Mark Knopfler was saying was that we are fools to go to war since *all* humans are our brothers. The song is widely misinterpreted, which I know Mark finds annoying.

Thank you for this reaction, Mortius. I had to watch your reaction twice because I was too teary-eyed to take it in the first go-round. These are the types of reactions fans truly watch reactors for. When the emotions are just pulled out of you from left field and you just lose yourself in the song and the message, and nothing can be hidden or faked because you are truly moved by what you are witnessing. I am thankful that Home Free has been able to do that for you. I was a fan before I heard them do this song, but man, like you said, my respect for them rose immensely when I finally got around to listening to this song. Tim in particular got a lot of flak and hate for not just this song, but for his outspokenness on this other political/human rights issues as well. And it made me so proud to be his fan and to be a fan of Home Free, knowing that they were "in my corner" so to speak, and they could be heard in places where I couldn't reach, and sent a message that I was too scared to touch on, especially when they just as easily could have swerved around these issues and just continued singing sea shantys and good ole' boy country music. So again, thank you for this reaction, and thank you for sharing this song and talking about it with others and spreading the word on how amazing it is. And a big thank you to Home Free for helping me weed out my friends list of so called HF "fans" that I needn't have wasted any more of my time on.

What a great message. I am tinted (indonesian blood) and know how it is to be judged and discriminated against on my skin color. I'm not like that at all. But to be honest many of my "kind" are doing exactly the same to the "whites". It doesn't matter if you are white, brown, black, yellow, gay, lesbian, fat, thin, etc. Appreciate and respect each other. Nobody is perfect. It's not an original but with the way Home Free thinks and their personalities it could very well be theirs. Because what good guys they are. And then they sing it so unbelievably. The two incredible low voices of Tim and Chance. The great background vocals and adlibs from Austin and (gospel-) Rob, the harmony is grazy. And Adam with the incredible sounds he makes in combination with the bass just sound fantastic.

We may not like the times we live in, but the change starts in the heart, one person at a time. We all need to take responsibility for how we approach each other love or hate, it is a choice. But let's check out how a wiser than me literary character would some this up. "I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ― J.R.R. I think you were thinking Folk Song, but I"m not sure this would be considered as such. Love your reaction to this! Thanks, Mortius!

Loved your reaction! And yes, Home Free is standing in their beliefs and “calling out” everyone else.

I first heard this song on Spotify, and I never really thought about it’s message, I just figured it was kinda like an army chant. However, watching this reaction made me think about the message, and I’m glad Mortius pointed it out to me. Side note: watching the patreon list get longer and longer makes me really happy since I can’t currently join without an income (I’m a minor without a job yet).

I’ve been waiting for you to react to this for sooooo long, even though I knew it would absolutely destroy you. Or maybe because I knew it would absolutely destroy you. 😈 I’m sure I’ve suggested it at least a couple times, but it’s been a while. I’m glad you finally got to it, and really glad I didn’t miss it.

They’ve been including this one in their concerts. Did they sing it at the concert you attended? I hope so. It’s really powerful live.

“Everybody Walkin’ This Land” is a song by Paul Cauthen. It is a swaggering, boot-stomping country tear that calls out everyone from the fascists to the angels across a percussive, bluesy stretch1. The song was originally released on his 2018 EP "Have Mercy"2.

I found this song a few months back and it hit me hard and still does. However it was first when you got emotional and started to talk that I started crying (which isn’t the first time heh) Very good video Mortius ❤

I believe the word you were looking for is a ballad. The definition is a poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas.
