"Hopper cars"? Yeah, this guy has a habit of grasping at things to make his point seem more legit. And his fear of Individuality drives his yearning for the Hive Mind. The weird thing these days is the outright nihilism and how people laugh about it. So many TV hows and movies that are a Death Fest on the "Battle Royal" model. The outgrowth of this is how the "Progressives" are riding the Entropy wagon straight to a global collapse just so they can say they won. Society and Civilization are being deliberately broken by people who are pathologically incapable of one simple thing; they cannot leave other people alone! He might be right; maybe the ultimate Tyranny, the Tyranny of thought-control, is our eventual fate. But if it is, the Human Race is an evolutionary dead-end. Innovation and original Thoughts will cease to be, and we will all be one big formless soup of apathy Lorded over by the clique that crated this mess.

Was it a word in 1973? My first introduction was to something called “the janet network” (joint academic network…network) which, it was explained to me, let universities in the UK all exchange information and collaborate. It was all too rarified for plebs like me to be allowed to get our grubby hands in, though. This was, if I recall, the early to mid 1980s.

@@secretwatcher9922 My dad watched Flash Gordon movies in the 1940s, no such thing as space travel then…except of course the movies were full of it. Flash also had “televisors” before the real world. You see tvs even in 1920s futuristic movies. The hospital scanners and monitors we have today were consciously modelled on Star Trek’s sick bay facilities. So were cellphones modelled on their communicators as soon as they could shrink the electronics smaller than a brick. In fact people have begun to research many things BECAUSE fiction writers developed them. So there were many iterations of a global communications network where people could make video calls, consult reference sources, get map guidance and message instantly. This is my point. This guy is summarising issues of utility, privacy, surveillance, working from home, public participation, invasive commercialisation etc - which had all been the staple diet of science fiction discussed over and over for generations. Philip K Dick wrote the basis of the Jim Carrey movie where he’s raised in an artificial world not knowing millions are watching…back in the 1950s. Now we have “influencers” using their own and their children’s “real lives” as performances for internet views and advertising in a creepily similar same way…

@@NekoFilm “Part of the agenda” - this is LAUGHABLE. Why is it so hard for people to just allow that there was a whole slice of public culture that you just didn’t know existed, and that there were smart people around THINKING about how the technology they could see developing might play out? This is what science fiction IS. It’s not stupid Hollywood space-cowboy movies about lightsabres. In those days, professors of philosophy in the main didn’t read science fiction or even have much idea what was going on in their science colleagues’ labs: both scientists and SF writers were a disparaged subculture. And to get anything into the public realm you had to have national-level broadcasters or publishers to take you seriously. Only then did you get some rare crossover who takes what are pedestrian themes in the subculture,summarises them and makes a big splash in the mainstream with them. it’s not an “agenda”, it’s SMART PEOPLE SPECULATING “if this goes on and they manage to make computers hear and speak, and link up with each other, what will that BE like, and what effect will it have on society?” Stupid people always think that THINKING is an organised plot: or if it was a ling time ago, it must have been aliens. Because if “I” didn’t know it or couldn’t do it, nobody else could”.

Yes, and as pathetically ironic as it is, one that I've recently come to realize I really miss is simply watching regular ass tv, being in the same room together, present, in complete unison. Without all of the ridiculously endless options it was a lot easier to be content with whatever show was on. Seems like there'll not be much of a need for such social rooms like the living, family, sitting, and dining rooms in the future.

Predictive programming? Is that what people not used to thinking or reading call thinking now? All of these things the bloke is discussing were being explored by millions - it was the staple of 1960s and 1970s fictional plotlines, though you had to go to the section marked “science fiction” to read it. He is reprising the main plotlines of any number of books of the SF canon of the times. He’s just discussing it without using fictional characters.
@eh1702
@eh1702 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not prophetic when you grew up reading in the 1960s and 1970s. Exactly these technologies and the human situations arising from them - these were the staple of a shitload of the best fiction in print at the time. With, actually, a lot more nuance and thinking-through than this guy can communicate in a talk. He is basically explaining an entire literary genre - issues already covered for two decades - to people who’ve never read it, or whose idea of SF is hollywood space cowboys. These were people aware of what research was going on at the time, and thinking about what life would be like once something like it was achieved. It was the opposite of some secret, nefarious plot. Nerdy college guys, the forerunner of Gates and Jobs, were busy working on stuff whose obvious uses they were extremely naive about. Their friends who read and wrote could see pretty clearly what actual human beings would do with it all.

@@lyndafayesmusic I don't think Alan was trying to predict the exact capabilities of technology in 2022. He is extrapolating using logical assumptions based on human nature. When he talks about the future he could mean 2322. Elon Musk and the gang are already boasting about electronic interfaces with the human brain that amount to mind reading. In 100 years I think Alan Watts will be perhaps even more accurate than he is now. Just because you think you can hide your thoughts during a zoom meeting at the moment realise they have facial recognition software that can detect micro expressions in the face and an algorithm to detect how you are feeling. Add that to your Apple Watch or Fitbit checking your vital signs and beaming them over the internet and you've got yourself a good old fashioned real-time lie detector. So how long before they can read our minds? If indeed they can't already. Alan Watts probably gleaned some of this from Buckminster Fuller and other forward thinkers of the time as Alan read a broad spectrum of subjects according to the quotes he makes. What a great thinker though. Gotta love big Al.

As much as I admire Alan Watts.. I would never put him above anyone else. To do that would be extremely tragic for everyone. We all can see when we understand not to look, but observe. Listen when we stop hearing. And become free from whatever we choose. If we learn how to make a choice about what we choose. Alan was a great philosopher. Always will be! But he will also be a being of his own point in the understanding of what was and what would become. But now we need not a new Alan Watts. Now we must become even wiser.. We must embrace novelty and new ways to coexist with the rest of us which strengthen all of us. It's either that, or we as a species will soon size to exist. Alan created a wonderful starting point for us.. Question now isn't how to or can we. But it is simply; Do we really, truly and honestly want to change so much that we actually will change? Doubtful. Unfortunately. 💜

It was through disconnecting from all technology - living without any electricity around me, no electrical gadgets or phone, or TV or radio, or any other media - Living remotely, immersed within nature, I became more conscious of natural energies (very intense and powerful, at times overwhelming), that my brain pathways changed - some closing down and others opening, I became incredibly psychic, verifiably psychic. It is not often enough said that, the reason why Alan's thoughts are relevant today is that, quite simply, he was present with the Now during his life. And, in a very real way Now is always Now. The past is a memory - a thought happening now. The future is a speculation, a fear, a hope -- a thought happening now. It is all now. I learned this intellectually many years ago, of course -- but it didn't really hit me -- I didn't really get with it, deep down until many years later, and it was due to Alan. Though he was long dead before I was born, I am fortunate enough to have had a moment with Alan nonetheless. I was listening to his lectures when "The State of Nothing" started up while I was walking around the banks of the river in my hometown, near the train station. I had just arrived home for a funeral, and Alan's talk started with transience, and death. So it was poignant, and I really started listening in earnest. He talked about the nature of how every creature's situation is the same and how we struggle to get a little more, or avoid losing what we have -- and I notice some squirrels near a tree struggling over some bit of food. He talked about imagining having a "spherical eye" that could see all around -- an experience I had, many years before, while hallucinating -- and it struck me how spot on he was: "there is a hole in the middle of reality". A nothingness. He then begins reciting some poetry on the nature of transience. At this time, a large ship came down the river and blew its horns. I don't know why, but in that moment I pulled the earbuds from my ears. I desired to hear this horn clearly, directly. I listened to it echo down the river canyon as it went under the first of two bridges, and then again as it went under the second bridge. And I again listened to the echo fade away down the canyon into silence. Then I put my earbuds back in only to hear a moment of silence. Alan, in a moment of pause himself just as I began to listen again. And then he continued.. "And then the echo goes.. the memory, the traces are all gone. That is the end, you see?" It would be sufficient to say that I was on the one hand struck blind by the sun in that moment, and on the other that my vision expanded to encompass the entirety of the sky. In just that moment, I finally felt it in my core rather than merely my mind. And then he went on to say "So cheer up, you see -- this is what is meant in Buddhist philosophy as we are all basically nothing." And here, my gloom and sadness at the impending funeral was lifted. Though I still missed my dear loved one, I knew that they were not really gone. That they were merely transmuted into a new form. And, like Alan, if I was present and listening -- right now -- that I could have a moment with them again as well.

We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. I studied this in my college communications class last year. Watts at the time was an expert in society, philosophy & communications and had vast and deep knowledge of the history of all modes of communication and the path it seemed to follow as time went on. By looking back to the entire communications process, it’s speed and efficacy in transmitting and receiving information and analysing the ongoing needs and wants of consumers, he was able to FORECAST what might be next by addressing what wasn’t working so well previously. So he wasn’t a prophet or clairvoyant but was able to observe trends and predict with a certain degree of accuracy, where it might eventually go next. Similar to the way a meteorologist can forecast rain or storms. or a financial analyst may forecast potential future profits and losses within a company. There’s so much more to it but I hope that helps to explain what might first appear as magic or crystal ball reading.

This guy was the modern nostradamus, to envision the future of technology and communication to that degree of accuracy in a world where the Internet was just a strange word is incredible. I think because of technology today we are losing our capacity for critical thinking in exchange for quick dopamine highs, I dread the future of humanity because we are using external means to evolve and evolution is not supposed to work like that.

Yes, amazing words by Alan Watts. Concerning ESP, I'm trying to imagine if I want to know everyone's thoughts. I'm wondering if this will just complicate actual word communications and discussions because knowing the inner thoughts of the person with whom you are interacting with means understanding the person's past, present, and hopes and dreams for the future. That sounds like a lot to process. I don't think humans will ever experience that capability in the future because we are all infinitely complex and complicated.

What he said about how everyone must answer their phone or a text message asap. People start to think the worst possible scenarios out the longer they go without getting an answer. Then when you get back to them the next day you spend more time apologizing for not calling them right back, then time is spent on the actual reason for their call. Man I remember back before cell phones how my Dad would leave messages on his answering machine to remind him to call these people back on the weekend. They would never give him the business about him calling back on Friday evening.

Allan's main point was that nothing has changed other than the way that we choose to go about things. For those who are sad about the way things have gone, I am with you 100%, but we must truly understand the message he brings us in this video and others. Nothing has changed but the ways we choose to spend our time. There is no reality other than the present time. So, although it is quite sad to see so many people in modern society embrace these new pursuits, often times leaving their humanity behind, there is literally no reason why you should live this way. But most people who share these sentiments don't stop to compare how they live now, vs the time in which they long for. The trick is that when you look back at the good old days, you often correlate the difference in the things you do now vs the things you did back then, to age and life circumstance. If it weren't for that, you'd have to accept that the way you live now is due to the change in society, which you disapprove of, and we'd have to admit that it has happened to us too, which is a hard pill to swallow. But do know, that you are deciding to live the modern way each and every day, and in every moment of the day. When you realize that there is absolutely nothing external suggesting that you do this, you can start doing the things that you miss at once. You're awake enough to see the problem, but maybe not enough to see the solution. Move out of the city, get rid of the smart phone, enjoy the simple things in life, and talk to people doing the same. That probably sounds extreme to some, but once you do it, you'll realize that the world is exactly as it was and has always been. You'll see that you actually are participating in the modern society in which you despise; even if you don't participate, being a spectator puts you in the arena. You don't realize that being in the arena is as loud as on the field, and just because you're not playing (doing all of the modern things now available) it's still changing you, as you watch a game in which you don't enjoy. But if you leave the arena, there are many places that time does not affect, and there's no reason why you wouldn't do what you used to do there. Stop choosing to be trapped. Remember what the good old days were all about, pin point the activities, and do them at once. And don't stop doing them. In some time, you'll see that you were choosing to live the modern superficial way this whole time because you've been tricked into believing it's the only way, and it's not by your choosing. Once you've shed the conditioning to modern societal norms, you'll see that you're not living "differently", you're just living normally, and it's everyone else that has traded in the normal life for constant entertainment and digital relationships. You can even live better than before because now you have the ability to fully appreciate the simple life knowing what you know now. Don't think about how everyone else is choosing to live, become very interested in how YOU choose to live, and undo what has been done.

If we could read each others thoughts, none of us could hold down a job or would have any friends. Your boss would fire you for thinking he was wrong or that he was a jerk. And friends always say they want to know the truth but they really only want to hear what they want to hear. Imagine actually saying out loud to your friend that you think her boyfriend will never marry her because she is not smart/good looking enough for him. Luckily, at least for now, you can hold your thoughts as private.
