In many parts of India, baby boys are favored over girls, who-due to the dowry system-can be seen as a financial burden on families. But the people of Piplantri are fighting this prejudice. In Piplantri, villagers celebrate the birth of their girls by planting 111 trees for each infant. The ritual began after Shyam Sunder Paliwal lost his teenage daughter, Kiran, and planted a tree in her honor. Today, he is leading the charge to ensure the girls of Piplantri are protected from harm and educated so they can grow up to be independent and self-sufficient. The trees are now becoming a source of beauty, sustenance and growth for the girls and the village as a whole.

@@condorX2 well actually birth control and family planning is being acknowledged by people these days as in most of the house holds are stopping after 2 children but since the Indian culture emphasises on a tight knit large families and strong bonds it takes time as we are used to having such big families and soo many relatives ... It breaks my heart that maybe in the future we may not see such large fun families with many relatives and having fun with all the siblings but sadly it has to be done and the process has started

@@condorX2 it is happening in india, but it takes time as there is a large number of people who aren't educated..it's very difficult to get the idea across them as they believe more kids means more earning hands for the family.( They all live with parents like a joint family).if you look at the educated folks the number of kids are less..it's surely happening, but is slow..you can never expect the same kind of growth from a developing country as what you see in a developed country..being said all that I do appreciate their efforts in planting the trees...it's great to know that the village is doing it's bit.😀

Piyush Uniyal there are actually microbes that can digest plastic now. sending our trash to space is actually not a good idea, b/c in 10000 years, that stuff will be necessary resources. just like we recycle algae from 100,000,000 years ago for oil now, all elements on earth are useful in certain circumstances. removing those things that were once useful but still contain all the elements of the previously useful material would not be wise. we want to keep all the material on earth as possible, b/c you never know what might become recyclable in times of scarcity in the future. helium, for example, is the second most abundant element in the universe, but we're running out of it here on earth. recycling is the answer. flinging valuable elements into space is not. i still gave you a like though, b/c the person you were replying to didn't really require a serious answer

Things are changing in India too. Everybody wants to follow US lifestyle and it will be a disaster. US lifestyle is largely based on Materialism and that sucks. I hope Indians will stop following them blindly... Indians have a rich culture.. they might not have much Materiel things but they surly had big hearts and love for nature. You will always find these little climate saving steps everywhere in India. Not only India, it is the ordinary folks around the world who we consider poor, backward, uneducated who make a difference with their ordinary deeds. In many cases without even knowing that they are doing something great. But in this reality TV world we live in, the Greta Thunbergs get nominated for Nobel Prize. It is not that really good hardworking people aren't there anymore, but our standard for really good hardworking people has dropped so low that anyone who cares to do anything is considered a hero.

When I was working as an intern in the labor room, I used to notice the reaction of women to whom girls were born. Although not all of them, but some did express sadness or complete indifference to the girl child. Occasionally I also saw them and the relatives frowning upon hearing the news of a girl being born. It perplexed me so much. It’s not like an animal was born, a healthy and living human being was born, and instead of happily welcoming her to the world, these fucked up people mark the very beginning of a girl’s life as if a bad omen has happened. So I really wish that girl children are born to more accepting parents who can actually look after that child and provide her with love, support and education as each child deserves, irrespective of their gender.

Yep the main reason according to me is that girls aren't allowed to lead the family. They are treated as "Paraya Dhan", as soon as they get married they take care of the husband's family. So Indian Parents always want at least one boy so that he can help them when they get old. And well this system isn't going away anytime soon.

Educated women either fail to pass on genes for IQ or fail to do as much with their education because they get baby rabies.

Me being Indian I feel extremely happy watching this video and at the same time I feel a little sad that this is implemented only in few places. I hope that at least if this video blows up and many people know about it, maybe some difference would be made. So, thanks a lot GBS and I hope that village prospers with time.

In my village in India.. When girl marries, she has to plant 10 trees🌱🌱 & her family will look after those trees! We have been practicing this since last 2010..🙂 Thank you GBS for this story i was unaware of this village which is doing same good work as my village!🙏
