I want to add that It could have been Nintendo who decided to start fresh with a new voice actor and this is in no way disrespectful to Charles. They are actually honoring Charles the same way they are honoring Miyamoto. Charles is still employed and paid by Nintendo as an ambassador. I don't think it was his choice, but I think Charles is the kind of person who would gracefully step down and with so much gratitude in his heart for having had the honor of Playing Mario for so long. There have been 2 to 3 voice actors for every other role and he has remained. I am a super fan and it hurts to see him go but I understand that it's time.

It's only natural that people step down. People can't remain on the same position forever. After a while age starts to kick in, a person starts to get tired and wore out. It's amazing that he lasted for so many years.

I think people should wait for Charles to say something than coming to the worse mindset right away. Charles has worked with these people for decades and if he were fired I doubt he'd keep working with them. Plus Miyamoto would have no obligation to say anything like he will. Its just crazy that yeah Charles will always be connected to Mario and will still be but he wants to focus more on himself. Getting to 70 is when you have to start worrying about yourself. Your health and think about what you truly wanna do with the remaining part of your life. Maybe he wants to travel the world more as the mario ambassador. To meet as many fans as he can.

Honestly what I believe (but we'll have to see what is said in the video message) is that this was Charles Martinet's decision, and here's why: He apparently loves to travel, and especially interact with fans. My guess is that now that he's getting older, he wants to spend even more time traveling and interacting with fans than he already was because it brings him so much joy. Hence why he's being promoted to Mario Ambassador, traveling the world but still doing the voices while he's interacting with fans.

Look, as much as I love Martinet and always will love him as the voice of the Mario Bros, it kinda feels like he's getting at least SOME form of toxic praise if THIS is how some reacted to the news of him retiring from his role. The fact that this is not happening in today's world on such a large scale is a major reason society is collapsing. Everybody wants "rules for thee but not for me" - especially those that claim to be a part of certain three-letter groups.

I think people are colored by American corporate culture and forgetting Nintendo is Japanese centric. In Japan, "Salary Men" put in long hours, day after day, for decades all for the same company. The people who work for Nintendo, once they get their foot in the door and get hired, seem to be in for life and for the creative passion they can express there.

The only thing which I disagree with you is when you said ''That's private. If they don't gave us a public reason, we don't need to have a public reason.'' I think that Nintendo needs to be as transparent as possible with the Mario fan base about this change. Because one day or another, the truth will be known. It's kind of a public thing... Like the news about the voice actor behind Bender in Futurama who was about to get cut for the new season. Or when the voice actor behind Chef left South Park. People just need to know or else rumors will happen.

I think its an amazing opportunity to be able to actually witness the future of your legacy before death. Very very few truly influential people get the chance to watch the evolution take place, and to be directly involved with that evolution will have Charles on an extremely satisfied retirement. This is much greater news than just waiting for him to die and not knowing what's next.

This should stop. I played Super Mario 64, and I met Charles Martinet, the best voice of Mario and Luigi and others. But now he's a Mario ambassador. I played Dr. Mario 64, too, so I heard Queque music from this game. I also played other Mario games, like Bowser's Fury, Mario Golf: Super Rush, Mario Kart 64, and Mario Tennis 64. I didn't play other Mario games, like Mario Sunshine or Galaxy or Double Dash or Mario Kart Wii or 8 or 8 Deluxe.

Let's just stop for a minute and be realistic. Do you honestly think Nintendo the company that had Charles voicing Mario for decades would just push him to one side and call it a day?

I think it is highly likely that Nintendo informed Charles that they will be moving in a "new direction," with the characters he voiced, and in light of all of his years of service will make sure that he always has a place in the company in some capacity. Along with his new role I am sure he got a big ol' NDA to sign. 67 is not terribly old to continue acting and voice acting in particular is very forgiving in that regard. Charles certainly seemed to have a continued enthusiasm for the work, and we've seen no signs of his performance suffering. The ambassadorship is what makes me feel like this is the case more than anything else. If he was pursuing something new, or had to retire due to health concerns I imagine it would be a clean break. It's a sad possibility to consider that he was pushed out before wanting to leave, so people are reacting emotionally to the prospect. Most likely we won't find out if this was the case until after his passing by a source close to him. Nintendo makes great games, but nothing in their conduct would get me to extend them quite this much benefit of the doubt as you do. They act like a business 100% of the time, because that's what they are. If they believe removing a beloved icon from his role will secure a better result, I do not doubt that they would make that decision every time.

I do have a feeling that since he’s 67, he and Nintendo came to the agreement that it’s time to slow down on the voice acting and just relax given he’s already older than both the Japanese and American retirement ages (60, soon to be 65 for Japan and 65 for America). I can’t say which one said what first, I’d assume Charles, but either way you are right. It doesn’t seem that anything negative is going on and he’s not unhappy with the situation.

Nintendo didn’t like that the “talent” has become bigger than the “brand” case and point being the internet backlash at the announcement of Pratt as Mario. Nintendo found Kevin Afghani who sounds like a cheap knockoff of Charles Martinet.. Charles is still voice acting and has been a “Mario Ambassador” for the past 20 years of being on the convention circuit.

Charles Martinet has been the voice of Mario for quite a long time, and him retiring is definitely something up to him, I know it's hard and it really was for me, but we all knew at some point Mario would have to get a new voice. Thank you Charles Martinet for being the voice of a generation's childhood.

I have to agree with you on the fact that they are celebrating him not being exactly in the movie itself, but playing the role of a father or the character that looks just like Mario playing a different Mario game. I never heard any negativity. I don't think anything nefarious happened per se, but Nintendo are still a corporation at the end of the day, and I have zero respect for the majority of things they do that fly in the face of their own developers more often than not. When I say I love Nintendo, I mean the games, not the company. I'm not gonna claim anything definitely happened between them and Charles, but I kind of feel that the message they posted was just kind of hollow, but maybe that's just me being used to corporations posting text images like that on numerous occasions before.

Honestly this is the exact same take I have on this, I firmly believe that whichever side decided this, it was done on a mutual agreement, why we don’t yet know, I’m aware he said he wants to do this until he dies, but we all say things. The people who can't let go of Charles are gonna have a hard time. People age, sooner or later Charles was gonna step down even if "Nintendo was forcing him to". Maybe it's because after hearing Chris Pratt's middling performance for Mario in the mario bros movie they're reluctant to let go of their childhood voice actor. Just be happy we had Charles for this long and let him retire if he needs to. Nintendo can be annoying with their methods but their not outright cruel when it comes to their voice actors. Now the biggest question is who will fill his shoes when comes to all the voices he did for mario, luigi, wario, and waluigi, and toadsworth?

There’s nothing wrong in people speculating and assuming, after all that’s what yours and other Nintendo channels are mostly about, rumours and speculation. If Charles has quit due to his health then he would not have taken the ambassador position, he has likely been let go and they gave him that ambassador job as a sweetener, especially after the drama that unfolded with last year from the voice actor from Bayonetta, Hellena Taylor. Nintendo didn’t want to look bad so it’s why they are making look rosey, Of course Charles is going to accept what Nintendo say as he is still being paid..

I think people need to let it go and accept that this era of mario is over. Now don't get me wrong. I also grew up with Martinet as Mario. But i am excited to see what's next for Mario. And i am happy for charles who had such a wonderful career. Because unlike others i don't treat him like he's some god. He's a human being.

My take is simply that, its NOT impossible that there is some behind the scenes scuffness to this. Because Nintendo is not a perfect company that can do no wrong. At the same time, some folks exaggerate them, and for the time of being... there is zero signs of anything malicious around this news. So until we hear otherwise from Charles or Nintendo, I won't see it as any deeper. He's stepping down, and folks have to accept this. Though they're valid if they don't like the new voices & miss Charles.

In my opinion it is incredibly rude that they cast some random celebrity instead of Charles. Pratt sounds nothing like Mario nor has the personality of him and was't even willing to try and be like him. It's so obvious that he dosen't care about Mario or love the series, it's pretty obvious he made that 'stomping koopas' up on the spot. They chose him because he was famous and that was it, it's not fair. Charles dosen't see Mario as just a job, he cares about Mario so much, maybe because he is the closest real-world equivalent of Mario. If you look at his Instagram videos, he is the sweetest man on the planet. Of course he is getting on a bit now but there was something going on during the Mario movie, a friend of his on Twitter said he was a bit down and could use a remind from his fans that like him. Here’s the thing. Charles has continuously been on record saying that he wants to do the role until he dies. He loves voicing Mario so much. I just don’t see how this could possibly be his decision.

Charles Martinet was 100% pushed out the door. If he wanted to retire Nintendo and Charles would have just said that, but they didn’t. Even Kitt and Krysta, who worked at Nintendo PR for 10+ years immediately said on their podcast the day this happened that Charles would not have given up this job, he was pushed aside. The Mario ambassador role they announced was just Nintendo’s way of keeping him from being too upset, and trying to give him a pleasant exit.

Now maybe they can find a voice for Mario that doesn't make it sound like his testicles are in a vice.
