I was at that concert (and 2 other nights) and the air was electric. By the time they got this (it was the 2nd encore) they had been playing for 2 hours and 10 minutes. Note also that NONE of band moves from their place: they don't need to, they just let the music do all the talking. PLEASE - do yourself a favour. Grab your self some nibbles and your beverage of choice, take yourself to a darkened room and watch the entire 2 hour 40 minute concert in its entirety. You will not regret it and you can thank me later.

I have joy in my heart when young people are introduced to Pink Floyd, often reacting in disbelief. Comfortably Numb features what many people have dubbed the greatest guitar solo of all time. Many fans call this their favorite song of all time. The truthfully try not to overthink it. The meaning of the songs often change is one grows older, reflecting upon their own mortality. At times these masterpieces are almost too much to take in. But you will get it. In time

It's also a tribute to founder Syd Barrwtt after he left in 1968 due to his worsening mental condition. Much of Waters's lyrics and the themes in Dark Side encapsulate post-World War II British anxieties.

It is always fun to see someone react to this for the first time, how could anyone expect such a performance? On the lyrics, the story goes that they are partly based on Roger Waters' having to perform on stage after he had a weird reaction to a medication he was taking. But I think that experience was used to convey something far more important--what you referred to as detachment. There is a lyric in Comfortably Numb that is one of the saddest ever, "The child is grown, the dream is gone."

Detachment is a good way to put it. There is a whole story behind where this song fits into the story of the album (The Wall), but on its simplest level, yes as you get older and pain inflicted on you (both from others and from yourself), you lose that innocent wonder of childhood and become detached from your true self. There is much more to the context of this song of course but I think on that level we can all relate to it. The “pin prick” is a doctor giving him an injection of whatever to make him feel enough euphoria to get him through a performance, but it can be taken on more symbolic levels as well. Such is the magic of Pink Floyd.

To me Comfortably Numb is about those times in life when you're going through something so difficult that your emotions shut off and you're left feeling numb. I think really it's a song which can have many interpretations. My brother has a very strong reaction to this song because it reminds him of when he was suicidal. And I know people for whom the song very much speaks to overdosing on drugs. It's an incredibly beautiful song. It's so dreamy and comforting, but also has this underlying emotion that is bursting out and proving difficult to contain. Musically it really fits the idea of repressing intense emotions.

Good reaction. The entire Pulse concert was the pinnacle of a live performance that every band/artiste should seek to emulate. Perhaps you could react to the entire concert from stat to finish, one piece at a time? The exception to that being the part where they perform The Dark Side of the Moon album in it's entirety. That would need to be done in at ,least two parts.....

It was a flashback to when he was a child with high fever. Then he is not feeling well before going on stage with the band, and gets that feeling once again after the doctor gives him a little shot to help him through the concert, bothe times he describes it as feeling Comfortably Numb (( a little high , but without pain) . This song was based on Roger Waters true experience as a child who got really sick and then as an adult, As well.....Comfortably Numb. So, it was written in early 70s when it was psychedelics in pop culture and music. The lead guitar is David Gilmour, one of the best guitarists and a soothing voice, and great harmonies. Great band. 👍 ❤

I think we made our point. 😏 You are definitely on the right path... Detachment from reality. The song is from Pink Floyd's double concept album called "The Wall", considered a masterpiece. It is about a rockstar going slowly insane.. Becoming detached from reality. The whole album tells a story. This song appears about 2/3 of the way in. Good call! This is why I implore you to listen to the studio versions first as their extraordinary live performances tend to distract from the lyrics if you've never heard the song before. And Floyd's lyrics always have something to say. Not to mention the extra dimension of sound you get with a pair of good headphones. Check out the studio version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" 1-5 next. Good job!

No worries here about your pausing, although you will get more from listening without pausing too often. I'm here to experience your reaction to the music I grew up with. I can have a listening experience any time with my collection. (I'm trying to picture us in the '70s lifting the turntable needle every several seconds to replay something. LOL) My first recommendation is the studio version of "Roundabout" by Yes, which barely beats out a great tune from my favorite band, Genesis with Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, "Firth of Fifth." If you love Pink Floyd, there are countless deep and winding rabbit holes awaiting you. Enjoy!

David Gilmour is a God. Thank you for not interrupting David. When people try to reproduce what David does it takes 2 or 3 guitarists to produce what one great man does.

That's why no one should ever pause it especially while he is playing his riff

I saw this tour in 94 and the previous one in 87. In 94 I was center stage in the 14th row. Both tours were unparalleled to any other show I’ve seen and I’ve seen some of the greats. If you watch the movie Pink Floyd: The Wall, it explains it pretty well. Roger Waters felt an ever increasing barrier between himself and the outside world/fans, to the point that he felt he didn’t even hear them. He was found in a drug induced state after trashing a hotel room and a doctor gave him an injection to bring him around so he could do a concert (just a little pin prick…that’ll keep you going through the show, cmon it’s time to go). The album and movie are brilliant. There is a song called When the Tigers Broke Free in the movie that was not included on the album because the producers thought it was too personal. It was later released on the remaster of The Final Cut. It is my favorite Pink Floyd song.

The track comes from the album "Wall", the person (Pink) suffers from a series of damaging emotional events, his father died, his school years were oppressive, his mother was too controlling, his wife left him. each event caused him to protect himself from the outside world by adding another brick to the wall until, at this point in the album, he has has built the wall and he is untouchable from any emotional trauma, he has become comfortably numb. So numb that there is no point in living (One of the first tracks on the album the lyrics were addressed to an unborn foetus - "So you thought you might like to go to the show" i.e live.) so there is now a necessity to get him motivated again to "Go to the Show". He both claims his success at being separated from all humanity but he also realises, at some level, that he has lost all that is to be human... "When I was a child I had a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look but it was gone, I cannot put my finger on it now, the child has grown, the dream has gone and I have become comfortable numb." Later on this separation causes him to go mad ("... and the worms ate into his brain.")

I ain't mad at you for pausing, I'm here for your reaction, you do you. You're not overthinking it, you've got the theme of the song exactly right. Check out the entire album - there's also a movie set to said album.
