@@Michael-ct1rp LOL. If you can’t see a “woman” because her hair is short..or shaved (to reveal ..by the way..a stunningly gorgeous face)..seems that YOU are the damaged one. I have no doubt others do share your sentiments. There will always be shallow and ignorant guys who think a girl is only attractive if she has long hair. You can’t help it if you are narrow minded…

This video and song blasted through MTV. It's hard to remember how god-awful stupid the music and culture had become when this landed. "120 minutes" launched it, but it couldn't be contained there. It was like all the silly pop culture and superficial goofiness hit the pause button for a few minutes. It stripped things bare and resonated in a way that had been missing for too long. I'll die on the hill saying that this particular song and this particular performance was literally the thing that started killing hair-metal and ushered in a new shift in taste and sensibilities. It wasn't just part of the shift. It was the push.

When this song was released in 1990, I was on a warship sailing away from home. This is the same emotion sailors feel on the first day of sailing. I have never seen so many grown men affected by a singer as I did when I went into the dining hall on that day. Big boys don't cry, but some were only just managing to hold back the tears from falling into their food. Well done Sinead for giving us this rare show of emotion and thanks Nomee for reminding me how we all reacted when we first heard this.

Sinade’s mother died when she was 18. She was 25 when this song debuted. However, you are right about the fact that she thinks about her mother every time she sings it, which is the reason for the tears and sadness and the pain in her voice. Her mother was extremely emotionally, physically, and sexually, abusive towards her. Somehow, somewhere in her beautiful heart, she still longed for her mother. RIP Angel Sinade… this world was too ugly for you. Thank you for the memories and the music.

Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 18 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers you planted, Mama, in the backyard) was thinking about her mum, who died in a car crash three weeks before. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics of this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.

Thank you from Ireland for your HEARTFELT reaction☘We are still mourning our beautiful Daughter Sinéad💔 Sinéad was a force of nature with unmatched talent, but she was also very fragile. Please react to her live acapella performance of 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' - a 17th-century Irish poem that she transformed with just her voice and a 'beat box' sample; She was keening for our Country & it is pure perfection. The media and music industry cruelly shunned her for speaking THE TRUTH about the catholic abuse of innocent Irish children, including herself & she was eventually proven CORRECT - now an acknowledged fact globally. But the damage was already done to her and her career. I hope they're proud of their relentless victim shaming of a 23 year old girl who was brave enough to speak out. Rest easy sweet Sinéad - I hope you're finally at peace with your beloved son, Shane💚

Since Sinead’s passings I have listened to interviews and excerpts of her audio-book Rememberings. Prince wrote the song, however Sinead made it a global hit. It resonates with so many as a break-up song when in fact Sinead thinks of her mother who brutally abused her as a child and young teen. Her mother died in a car crash a few years earlier. Sinead had a love hate with her mentally I’ll mother. She made attempts to get help for her to no avail, back in Ireland in the 1980s. Such pain, so beautifully expressed.

Sinead mentioned in her book that while filming the video she started thinking about her mother who at that time had recently died and they had a turbulent relationship, she said she never thought of her during recording the song but when they started rolling on that shot of just her face he mother came into her mind and the whole time during the filming she was fighting tears and just trying not to bawl but one single tear did escape

What a touching reaction, thank you for letting us see how this song spoke to you. You've felt this in your life, you have known the lonliness of being left, felt as deeply as Sineade had.

In the 80's when I was a teen, Sinead was my favorite artist. I listened to this over and over. It still is so beautiful.

Sinead O'Conner said in an interview that the pain in this song for her was more about her Mother. Her Mother had a garden that she made Sinead sleep in. Originally written by Prince who wrote this for the band "The Family", Prince was in a relationship with his then bandmate's Wendy's twin sister Susanna Melvoin.
