I'm happy that I unintentionally inspired you 😄 It looked like a stunning area to spend the night and that is a cracking tent. It looks like it was coping well with the wind, which is good to see because it's not always safe to head back down in the dark. Like you said, it's not a failed camp, just an opportunity to learn from the experience 🍀

Cheers man. Yeah hard call to head down the mountain but the fact I was so close to the car park made it a easier decision. It was the right call.. by the morning it was gale force. Still a great night though. Loved it. It would have been fine but the angle of the wind I wasn't expecting. Until the next adventure. Whoop whoop.

Your tent looked like it was doing fine, looks like you not used to using tunnels in bad weather and got frightened. Tunnels fabric moves alot in the wind , but look at the poles to see how much the tent is really moving, which won't be much. The Hilleberg red label Katium was tested to destruction breaking a pole at over 100mph pitched into the wind, 80mph from the side, Your tent can probably handle as much. The wind was probably only 50-60 mph, 1/4 the strength of 100 mph winds. If in doubt , just double pole it , doubling it's strengh. Have a 3 season tunnel myself, the hilleberg anjan 2. The anjan is super strong, but prefer the Akto if windy though which can be double poled with just 1 more pole, less drafty and warmer.

Thanks for the info. 100% understand what you're saying. Yep tunnel tents move a lot. I needed to trust my gut. The direction of the wind was the issue and it was going to get much worse. The tent was holding up though. It's a great tent.. If that was the worst it was going to get it would be fine. But I made the right call. It got so much worse through the night so I was happy. Helium 1 the next time. I must check out the Hilleberg katium. My tent fetish continues.

As mentioned before if you go buy stronger poles from campingspares (it adds I think 150g) the Xenon will be much stronger. You have to cut the poles down if you go for thicker ones but it is a good upgrade for the windy Autumn season.

@@soletrail The Meteor Pro 200. Scafell 200, tents like that use Gothic arch poles although they are fairly standard 8.5mm ones. On the site you can see what the poles are made of and diameter so you can upgrade. I went from 7.5mm Yunan to 7.9mm Powerlite poles. The big difference was the pre bent separate gothic arch top piece, on the original poles it was just a shallow bend in the pole. Overall it made a big difference.

People don't understand gluten intolerance, it's a very real pain. With the milk you can also try mixing it with a little cold water into a paste that has worked for me in the past. Great little video in a beauty place. Bailing is not a failure, it's part of being experienced enough to know when to do it.

aahhh, I also have to avoid gluten and make my own meals. I don't have a dehydrator, so I use rice noodle nests (the flat ones that don't disintegrate like the vermicelli ones) and then assemble the rest to make my wild camp ramen :D I usually bring powdered broth and herbs in a tiny bag or those salad dressing little tubs; the other ingredients go in a ziplock bag: dried mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, cooked chicken (a few slices of leftover roast chicken are perfect), asparagus... whatever ingredient works for you. Thank you for sharing your experience. It's good to show not every wild camp goes perfect... We can never be 100% sure what will happen on a wild camp. There's no failure. Only experience :) Stay safe

Martin, that was a really cool river valley with waterfall after waterfall, could walk that forever👍 Definitely lots of potential camping spots and I am sure up at the loughs too in lighter winds. Tea and biccies🍵 Not nice to have to pack up in the middle of the night though being in control rather than being stuck in a tent with the uncertainty of it all holding together in the wind and rain. I am somewhat 'gluten sensitive' .. probably not to the extent that you are. However, just the thought of the cost of those freeze-dried instant meals, gives me an indigestion that beats anything that gluten could bring on 😁. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Hey Thomas. Thanks so much for the comment. 100% agree with you. Bailing is something you gotta learn. That night the storm was coming in At 3.30 and it was so bad from 11am. Not worth it. Yeah I have a mild intolerance for gluten, I become a bloated camel 🤣 sticking to my own meals which are getting much better. The Ninja Air Fryer does a great job dehydrating. I'm just wondering which is the safer options, or perhaps the less dangerous one, in a situation like this. Stay with the tent, or make your way back down in those appaling conditions. Am I right in thinking the worst that can happen with the tent is that it gets blown down. It will still give you cover to keep hypothermia at bay until the wind dies down. Walking in darkness, albeit with a head torch, in a force 10 is, in my view, very dangerous. You can easily get blown over and hit your head off a rock, or worse, get blown over a precipice. I'd be interested in your views, Martin.

2:22 "The weather is meant to come in bad tonight but I actually don't care" - oops. Foreshadowing much? ;-) Never say stuff like that, it will ALWAYS bite you in the arse! Good call to bail, that looks scary. Amazed you got the tent down OK in that wind. Yay new pot! Yes I got the Fire Maple !ltr pot, and it makes a massive difference to be able to make risotto which is 700ml without spilling over like the Lixada. Just done my first first stealth wild camp on Thursday with the Speedster alcohol stove and that - video coming soon - but the simmer ring is really important to slow it down, I have the 50ml stove and it seems to burn too fast without it - great for boiling water, only takes 4-5 mins, but cooking needs to be slower. And yes dehydrating food is fun, I found it hard even with a proper dehydrator, but it does great jerky and mushrooms! I wish I'd gotten the air fryer, that was my first idea. Proper dehydrators take too much space, even if you can work in bulk. And Nido powder is the best I've found, the cheaper powdered milks don't dissolve that well (Marvel being the worst, Asda's own seems OK, using that atm for my porridge at home cos I refuse to heat milk in pans cos it's messy), Nido does dissolve even in cold water.

"Haha, the classic foreshadowing jinx! Lesson learned. The wind was a wild one, but thankfully the tent cooperated. Exciting to hear about your new pot and stealth wild camp with the Speedster alcohol stove! Looking forward to the video. And you're right, the simmer ring is key for more controlled cooking. Dehydrating can be a challenge, but jerky and mushrooms sound tasty. Nido powder is a game-changer, isn't it? Dissolves like a dream. Thanks for sharing your experiences! 🏕️🍲"

It's not always safer to stay, if the tent completely fails and rips, you're then totally exposed, and all your gear is drenched and possibly spread by the wind. Having all your warm gear wet, like down jackets and bags will fail losing your warmth, very dangerous - and you're suddenly putting all your stuff on and packing as fast as possible while all that is happening and trying to rescue the ripped tent without ways of securing it now, AND you also still have a walk down the mountain. If you know the way it's better to bail before that.
@harduphiker

It's certainly a judgement call, and I suspect no-one makes that lightly, knowing the risks of stumbling around in the dark (have to say, I've done enough night hiking to know it's not as risky as people say, and I used to do it along cliffs! Not an advised thing in a storm though). But staying and not listening to your gut - which is usually correct in hindsight - tends to be the stuff of emergency mountain rescues. It's better to leave the mountain or area if it's getting worse, because that might be the only window you have.
