What an amazing privilege to work side by side with your father. I wanted nothing more than that as a young person (I’m now 75), but my father believed girls had no business being a mechanic 😢. He worked mostly on farm machinery.

I can almost taste my mother's bread and butter pickles. When I was in my teens, in the 1980's we picked cucumbers for a pickling house. That sat right next to the train tracks in town. We picked acres and acres. Made pretty good money doing that and picking potatoes by the bushel.

Watching you picking those cucumbers, reminds me of when I was a teenager and had my first job, picking cucumbers. The farmer had a huge field, and we were four girls riding together on a cucumber picker drawn behind the tractor. We wore rubber gloves and were bent over picking cucumbers and hauling them into bushel baskets on the cucumber picker. It made for a fun day with four girls riding around chattering and picking. Our mothers couldn’t do the job anymore because that’s really hard on your back.

This year, first planting of peas didnt even come up, second did but we harvested next to nothing and it is the same in all the other gardens in our village. I have a son as old as callie and he also loves peas, so hopefull, next year it will be better. For now he has to be content with strawberries and raspberries
