It was really weird how disco was gaining momentum from 1975 to 1979. 1978 & 1979 were the biggest disco years of all, and then it hit a brick wall in 1980. I loved all of the mainstream disco. Those were some of the greatest dance songs ever!!!

This #1 disco hit was originally written for a teen girl and was all about a telephone call. When it was revamped a bit to fit a more mature singer the lyrics took on a more provocative tone. Anita Ward had moved on to a teaching career and was a very religious woman who had to be convinced to record the track, and it worked out.

Anita Ward also did an excellent cover of the song called “I Love the Night Life”. The original artist was Alecia Bridges. But, Anita Ward’s sweetness won my heart. Alecia Bridges was another one hit wonder as well. That reminds me of Cheryl Lynn’s “Got to be Real”, another one hit wonder.

@@marvintheatre thank you for reminding me. The fact that her voice is great and her appeal is wide shows how hard it is and was to get on the top 40 pop charts. Thank goodness that true talent isn’t just determined by one genre and one public. Cheryl Lynn, as you might also know, was a school teacher before she recorded her music professionally and was also on the Gong Show with Chuck Barris just before her music was promoted. She had nerves of steal. ❤️

My grandma Joann loved music. She grew up on country and Elvis. She had all these records we'd listen to when I was younger. Then she started to listen to my music and fell in love with this song, Prince, Stray Cats, Bruce Springsteen, and a whole array of amazing songs. We still kept up with country and how it was evolving. She was so much fun, and had the best taste in music. I miss her every day. But I love hearing songs that give me such wonderful memories of the time we would spend together. She was one of a kind.🎶🥰🌷

In the back of my mind where I don't always think so hard, I've always mixed up this song with "Knock on Wood" by Amii Stewart, another one-hit wonder. Ring a bell, knock on a (wooden) door, you know? Both were massive disco hits in their day. (They both came out in 1979.) This song was an all-time disco hit, whenever it came on at the club everyone would get up on the floor to dance as if their lives depended on it. Huge hit! And, if the ladies didn't have a male partner, they would dance with each other. Hearing this now brings back good memories. Thank you for reacting to this golden oldie (oh dear God, I'm at that stage in life). Another fun disco hit of the day..."Devil's Gun" or Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel" (Mighty Real) or "Young Hearts Run Free" by Candi Staton. Just a few disco hits from back in the early 70s. Or Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie" (1973)...or The Trammps "That's Where the Happy People Go" "Where Do We Go from Here" "Disco Inferno"

You ain't heard disco until you've heard *Boney M.* They are, in my opinion, THE greatest disco group and I'm not even that big a fan of disco. My sister saw them in concert and I was J.E.A.L.O.U.S.! They incorporate folklore into a lot of their songs too... "Rasputin" from the _Nightflight To Venus_ album would be a great start. But then you have "Gotta Go Home", "Nightflight To Venus", "Rivers Of Babylon", "Belfast", "Ma Baker", "Daddy Cool", "Bahama Mama", "He Was A Steppenwolf", "Painter Man"... ALL classics!!! 🤩

So I meant Anita back in the early 80's. She was in a car accident. So she was out for awhile. There was a 2nd single called " Don't Drop My Love." But the record company did not promote it. She tried a comeback. And actually asked my to be her road manager. She was performing on the Airforce base where I was stationed. Little Rock AF base. I produced that show. Unfortunately I was not able to get out of my military contract to do so. At that time, she just had a bunch of people hanging on, taking her money.

Everyone from Memphis was proud and excited ! She’s from Memphis and had a number one hit on the Billboard Top 100! The three hottest songs of the summer of 1979 was this and Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” and “ Bad Girls” 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! She went on to be a school teacher but to this day she still performs Ring My Bell around the world!

I remember still catching myself singing "Ring My Bell" in the shower a good decade after it was on the radio. It was very catchy!
