Those singers are Darlene Love, Jean King, and Fanita James - The Blossoms; may very well be the best back-up singers of all time. Beautiful. They backed up many singers in the '60's including many Johnny Rivers, Elvis, and Tom Jones. Darlene Love her own big hits as well some produced by Phil Spector.

Johnny Rivers had lots of hits in the 60’s and 70’s. He never stopped recording or playing live. I saw him in 2013 and his voice sounds exactly the same as it did in the 60’s. He was never a smoker or had a drug problem like a lot of performers, so his voice help up perfectly. There are lots of videos of him performing live at different shows on KZfaq and it will blow you away.

So many 60's songs for you to hear. A few off the top of my mind are: "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" by the Four Seasons, "Groovin" by the Young Rascals, "Tell Her No" by the Zombies, "Go Now" by Moody Blues, "Because" by Dave Clark Five, "I've Got To Get A Message To You" by the Bee Gees, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" by the Animals, "Daydreamer Believer" by the Monkeys, "The Air that I Breathe" by the Hollies and "Can't Find My Home" by Cream. Any Beatles song from their early albums. This is an eclectic group but the 60s had many styles from pop to harder rock as the decade progressed.

@@9drtr Thanks for that correction! As you mentioned Cream had lots of great songs. I didn't mention them as they were more progressive than the early 60s sound and it seemed to me that Amber was looking for a more early 60s or 50s pop/rock vibe. Johnny Rivers was an artist my older brother introduced me to in my single digit years in the mid 60's. Rivers is 78 now. The album he had (I still have it!) was 'Johnny Rivers Changes'. I didn't know it until years later, but the 'Changes' part of it was that he was a regular at 'The Whiskey A-Go-Go' on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, CA. singing, what was considered at the time pure hard rock & roll. It was considered antithetical to the 'squares' of the previous generation born in the 40's & 50's. When he did this 'Changes' album, he covered a dozen or so romantic ballads and 'love songs' like 'Poor Side of Town' (he wrote this song), 'Baby I Need Your Lovin', 'Tracks of my Tears', 'By the Time I get to Phoenix', 'Summer Rain' and, one of my favorites, 'California Dreamin'. He has a unique voice and vocal technique for sure. BTW... Rivers recorded the title song for the late night concert-influenced TV show 'The Midnight Special'. :)

Johnny Rivers has been around since the early 60s, and the last I heard was still performing. He was the most under rated performer of the entire Rock Era.

This song was co-written by Johnny Rivers, (born John Henry Ramistella) and Lou Adler, and was released in August of 1966. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in November of 1966. Background vocals by The Blossoms: Darlene Love, Fanita James, and Jean King.

Love this song! The background vocals in the older songs are just phenominal(sp?)!!! Some of the lyrics are just wow! You don't get background vocals today like they had back in the 50's and 60's. I love it!!!

To me it always seemed like there was an "I'm hurting" tone to his voice in this song. Other Johnny Rivers greats include: "Secret Agent Man", "The Tracks of My Tears" (yes, the same song done by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles), "Slow Dancing", "Help Me Rhonda" (yes, same as The Beach Boys song), "Memphis", "Mountain of Love" (cover version but still a big hit for him), "Seventh Son", "Summer Rain", "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" (cover, big hit), "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu", and so many more. Wow, I never realized back then that Johnny did so many covers, probably because they were still such big hits for him.

One of my favorite sings of all time. I have promised my wife that I would not sing in the car when she is asleep unless this song comes on. Then the volume is going up(a little) and I am singing along with Mr. Rivers. You are right, in incredibly good song and artist.
