This ride was not what we had originally planned for this day, we had hoped to do a more.......rideable mountain. The problem with that plan though, was it was Easter Weekend and those hills would be very busy indeed.
Not being able to decide where to go, Piers threw the idea of Ben Cruachan into the mix. To which I said f@$k it, lets give it a bash.
Neither of us were under any illusions that this would be easy, or even rideable for that matter, but the sun was out and we were up for an adventure.

I carry the same satcom setup and SWAT brand tourniquet wrap, very easy to use. Can also be used as a compression dressing, hold closed wounds etc or used as a wrap with field expedient splints. Great vid. Stay safe out there.

Wow that's some punishing mountain descent, too techy for me but to see some amazing scenery and dry sunny weather, have been to Loch Awe befoe and wondered if there's many trails about, interesting to know, well ridden and thanks for sharing!

Been up there walking in the winter many years ago and recall the brutally steep climb up from the road level. We planned on doing the ridge loop but surrendered to the snow cornices and icy rocks and retreated back the way we came. The amazing views from the top stay with me to this day. What a spot!

pumped back up at night when electricity is cheaper. It is then used when demand is high during the day and surge times when TV programs stop and people put the kettle on. This is takes the strain off power station demand. It uses more electricity than it produces.

So I use to work for part of the company that owns the water pumping storage company seen in this video. The idea of this place is during the night when there is a lot less demand of the grid pumps pump water to the top dam and let it down in the day time when demand is high. They will be paid to use the electricity at night to use up excess electricity normally made by wind farms (run 24/7 if it’s windy) as you have to match demand and supply

I totally understand how and why it works, just find it funny that it uses more energy than it makes, regardless of the reason. It’s such a cool place and an impressive feat of engineering though.

I think they pump the water back at night because that is when there is electricity being produced that isn’t being used & cannot be stored. Unless of course I’m completely wrong 😙

Your right, it’s pumped back up when demand is low. It’s only required for peak times and/or surges.

Particularly Epic views on thiis ride! I've always been tempted to get a sat phone or device for riding in extreme remote locations, but for me that doesnt happen very much any more and the £300 + the £17 subscription isnt cheap.. well worth it if the risk is there tho!

Beinn (Ben in English) simply means hill in Gaelic, so yeah, most are named that way, but not all. Almost all the alternative names are descriptive words in Gaelic.
