I bought the Silver dial version for my daughter and it is a stunner also. The dial takes on the colour of its surroundings. I am so impressed with GS quartz timepieces that I have just ordered the new limited edition SBGP017. 'Sea of Clouds' blue dial with the 9F85 movement. Interestingly, it also has a display case back. Expensive but a beautiful looking, and , expectedly, performing piece. I am hoping that this may be the start of GS producing high quality quartz watches with some of their gorgeous textured dials.

Lots of other watches are thermocompensated including watches from omega, citizen and eta based watches. Citizen make a movement that is accurate to 1 sec a year and you can get an eta based chronograph with thermocompensation and a stated 10s a year accuracy which has 27 jewels for hundreds of dollars not thousands.

@@murph8411 What you say is true however, in my opinion, there is more to buying a watch than accuracy. How it looks, the quality of the manufacturing and components, how it feels on the wrist and most importantly, how I feel when I am wearing it. The watches I buy and wear say 'buy me' when I see them, as in this case. Most pieces do nothing for me. At the end of the day you buy what you like, not what others think you should buy. There is no wrong or right, except for paying 8 X retail for a Rolex OP, that is just wrong!

I have a 1977 King Quartz. (In early 70s Seiko rebranded Grand Seiko and King Seiko to Grand Quartz and King Quartz as Quartz was so far superior to mechanical movements.) The movement keeps perfect time over the several years that I've owned it. It was rated at +/- 10 seconds per month from factory, but much better than that. 45 years old, no issues.

Quartz doesn't normally get me going, but there are a few exceptions, e.g. the sheer practicality of solar, as well as truly long-battery-life movements, but also the high-precision quartz from Citizen, though I'd struggle to make a case for the expenditure. Thank you for making it so clear what is special about these movements. That is a level of care I feel is on a par with developing mechanical movements in-house, and no, that should not surprise perhaps from Grand Seiko, but I didn't know, so that is very welcome. For me this watch subsequently brings together a lot of what makes Grand Seiko designs compelling. I'm not immediately fond of this date, but the handset and indices have all the hallmarks I have come to appreciate in Grand Seiko and would love to experience in real life some time. Add to that a relatively simple case with very good wearable proportions, and this is becoming quite compelling, if really not that affordable. I actually don't really agree with the weaknesses, except for that bracelet and the lack of info on the Grand Seiko website. What is up with that? I also don't find it particularly intuitive to find Grand Seikos I like using their website. But then again, it's kind of like phantom shopping when I can really splurge that much on a watch...

For those who do not want to worry about a battery and jumping seconds hand, there is the Spring Drive with 9R65 movements with an automatic rotor with sweeping seconds hand and the prices of GS models with these inside are rising. Seiko as a brand are a separate entity. Grand Seiko is in a stratosphere of their own. It took me quite some time to really get to know what they are all about and glad I did.

So many things to say about this video. Firstly - thank you; your love of watches in general and appreciation of this piece in particular makes the factual content very easy to watch. If you did a 45 minute video on this watch, maybe including some q/a with some of the other people you mentioned, I would watch it! 😁 Secondly - ah Seiko.... All the content about the movement and the indices (they're diffraction gratings) is why I fell in love with Seiko; all the comments on the bracelet on a watch costing $2k are why I fell out of love with Seiko (I'm now down to 2 from 'embarrassing' - both solar quartz). Thirdly - quartz movements - keep going. The fact (and it is a fact) is that all quartz movements are far, far more complex than the lossy 400 year old technology on which mechanical watch movements are based. We tend to forget that when the Astron was released in 1969 it cost the inflation-adjusted equivalent of about $12k. Quartz movements are not inherently cheap; they're cheap now as a result of the microprocessor and printed circuit manufacturing revolution - itself a miracle of modern science and mass manufacturing technology that we take for granted. Probably the best video I've seen on quartz movements is on Steve Mould's channel - but even he glosses over the small matter of analog to digital conversion, miniaturised in a wristwatch in 1969. For anyone reading this who may be sceptical, I honestly believe that once you understand what's going on inside a quartz movement, your appreciation of them, and what Seiko actually achieved back in 1969, will grow exponentially.

Great comment. There is a lot of snobbery in the watch community about quartz movements. Yes, they are now two-a-penny but like you said it’s amazing technology and this movement featured is very high tech and probably had a lot of R&D money put into it. Also people forget that GS have a great deal of hand finishing put into their watches. People are happy to praise the so called ‘value’ of a £2K Swiss watch like an Oris with a £120 Sellita automatic movement inside it but fail to realise just what good value a similarly priced but FAR better finished GS is.
@laurencehogg6010
@laurencehogg6010 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacc88888 I did wonder what feedback the comment might get, so I thank you for yours. Just in case I haven't poked this wasps nest enough though 🙂: the snobbery is a shame because those with it are missing out. Small prejudices are easy to change though with a bit of knowledge, which is why the lack of info on Seiko's website is so bizarre. Whenever I engage with or read anything about quartz snobbery, I'm always reminded of the 'non-watch' person conversation every enthusiast has had - that one where you start gushing to a normal person about the expensive Swiss thing on your wrist, trying to get them interested. At some point they ask the obvious question about accuracy and you have to admit your $4k automatic heritage Swiss timepiece is less accurate over time than a $20 quartz watch, and you can see them slowly reaching for their phone to call the local asylum and have you committed. Happy days...🤣

Fantastic video, Gary - thank you for making this. I was very close to buying this when we swapped messages on IG about the watch being discontinued, so I decided to get it. During my final research I discovered the GS SBGT235, which is a JDM model and exactly the same as the SBGX263, but with an English / Kanji day complication and a dressier bracelet with polished links. The day/date means there’s less empty space on the dial (something that concerned me about the SBGX263) and as I wanted a dressier piece the bracelet upgrade suited me. I received the watch on Monday and I absolutely love it. The size, fit and finish are magnificent. Wear yours in good health, Gary - looks great on your wrist.

Hi Gary, I've been your subscriber since August 2022.. I thought I've been missing out this GIVEAWAY until I watch your video recently that I still can enter this GIVEAWAY today 😄 I really like this SBGX263, but this model already discontinued and it's a bit hard to find it here in my beloved country, Indonesia 🇮🇩. I loved the "Rainbow Effect" on the hour marker of this watch. I also reviewing watch on my KZfaq channel recently.. I've got the SPB307J1 that also has similar hour marker, but not quite as perfect as this zaratsu finnished SBGX263. Thank you for introducing me to this gorgeous Grand Seiko, Gary.. I hope I can get my hands on this beautiful piece someday. I wish your channel the best of luck, Merry Christmas & Happy New year! 🙏

As an electric wheelchair user who never swing my arms I really can't use watches with automatic movements unless they are hand-windable, but that gets irritating over time. That's why quartz movements are so nice to me. Many fine timepieces are only offered with automatic movements, so it's so amazing that Grand Seiko offers quartz watches that look this good. I can feel like I wear a million bucks whiteout all the hassle!

In the 70's as a kid I remember my uncle splashing out on his first quartz Seiko. Such a thing was made about its accuracy, not having to be wound etc and everyone wanted one. Now everyone wants an automatic again which is less accurate and bit of a faff unless you then go out and buy an automatic winder. It's a funny old World. I'm guessing my grand kids will want a classic inspired quartz again.

Great review there.I personally think Grand Seikos are underrated. The Grand Seiko SBGX263 is a stunning watch that offers exceptional precision and quality. With a sleek and modern design featuring the champagne sunburst dial and polished stainless steel case, it is the perfect size for both casual and formal wear. Powered by Seiko's 9F quartz movement, it is highly accurate and reliable, with a unique backlash auto-adjust mechanism ensuring the hands remain in the correct position. Water-resistant up to 100 meters and with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, this watch is both practical and stylish. Overall, the SBGX263 is an exceptional timepiece that combines style and precision with effortless elegance.

How about the Longines VHP (very high precision) watches. You adjust the hour hand separately and they have a perpetual calendar. Longines were apparently one of the first to create high precision quartz watches. Claimed accuracy +/- 5 seconds a year. And a fraction of the cost of the Seiko.
@DrTerryBooth
@DrTerryBooth 2 жыл бұрын
@@BAF605 Yes they do. And the second hand on the ultra high frequency movement sweeps with no steps (which people rave about with the Seiko Springdrive movement). But then Bulova have been doing that since Accutron days.
@murph8411
@murph8411 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrTerryBooth only problem with the bulova precisionist watches is the thickness and the design of most of them. The only supposedly high accuracy quartz I have is a Certina DS2 chronograph with the 1/100th of a second eta 251.264 and again the designs aren’t the greatest. A lot cheaper than a grand seiko for sure.

Hi Gary, great in depth review! You did grab some interesting details….Enjoy it so much. I always fond of quartz movements as much as Automatics &Mechanicals. They do have their own complexities & functions, and as for GS, they really were designed as a daily companion watch to support daily activities. For instance, accuracy is very important for train commuters in Japan, and the 9F85 as you mentioned was a further upgrade for this requirement from the 9F62. Unfortunately, I had to sell my first GS SBGR001 to support my financial needs at that time, would be excited for a chance to take good care of your SBGX263. Thanks for appreciating 9F62 as much as 9S55 and keep on creating, mate! Cheers…

As advanced as the movement is, I'd prefer the same watch with a £19 meca-quartz movement giving the appearance of a sweeping hand, I suppose Seiko don't want to potentially damage the sales of the mechanical watches. A good looking (if very plain) well made watch, no doubt - but every time I'd look at it, I would see a £2000 quartz watch. Thanks for sharing Gary.

I just purchased the more hard to obtain and desirable 40mm version of this watch. Wanted a luxury quartz and this seemed to be the ticket. Went champagne for something different. Champagne dials are one of the hardest and longest time to make according to seiko supposedly. 40mm moves the bracelet up to 20mm. £1200 new in box from Chrono24 in Japan. Can’t beat that for the money…

The second hand is slightly off on one side of the dial…but it’s marginal and not obvious at all when it’s on your wrist and when I showed the double tick you could see the second hand hitting the 12 index perfectly…it like it to be better but it wasn’t enough to stop me buying it…

@@ilikewatches It was sort of a sarcastic comment. We tend to forgive certain watch manufacturers, Seiko specially, when the hands don’t hit the markers, bezels are not aligned. But with a “cheap” homage, we are less forgiving, we will complain and will not purchase the homage but when it is a big brand name we tend to let it slide because “ it is what it is”. With all that said, I like it when the seconds hands hits the indexes, but it would not stop me from buying a watch I like. But, I am less forgiving of misalignments on a watch.
