I think the reason others may not think to do this is because most people (it seems) prefer bright unnatural "pure" colors. This is very beautiful and subdued, and exactly the kind of look I am attracted to. Wonderful technique, I especially love the moss!

Yes about the pure colors, we have similar tastes then, I love the slightly dark, mysterious atmospheres.

I disagree with your statement that bright colors are unnatural, it seems a little shallow to me to think that way. Look at a field of wild flowers, how are those bright colors ‘unnatural’? Just because it isn’t your taste, it doesn’t mean that it is unnatural. I like subdued, bright, mystic, it just all depends on what the artwork is about.

Wow! What an awesome effect. I've had some water soluble graphite for years and really couldn't find a way to use it that I liked. I like the texture of it but I kept mixing it with my watercolor, making things muddy. Your technique lets that vintage subtle texture of the graphite shine. Gonna give this a try. I'd love to see more tutorials with these. Thanks for sharing!

I had a different watersoluble graphite set a few years ago and hated it, but bought this set of five this year. Have not used it much but liked it much better. You have given me some inspiration! I very often want to draw into paintings because I want the punchiness that a drank line can give and the immediacy of placing a mark with precision.never though of placing this process later rather than first! I guess I have always been influenced by pen and wash, where really the watercolour is the bit that gets filled in almost as an afterthought.

Françoise, I'm intrigued because I feel sure you do this normally, but you didn't here.... Gently rolling (not rubbing) a putty rubber (kneadable eraser) over the initial drawing will take off the excess graphite, leaving just a very light, but still visible sketch. Soften the putty rubber into a sausage and roll it gently with the rounded part of your palm (the mound under the thumb). If it's a large area, the eraser will get grubby, so stretch and re-roll the eraser to make a clean part and continue. This way, there's no excess graphite to move and make a mess when going over it with water or paint. 😊

This is such an interesting technique! Thank you! I recently discovered that my Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle set includes a graphite pencil! I hadn’t realize because the pencil name is Slate Grey 495, but because the pigment listed in the packaging insert is “graphite”! Pretty cool! And it definitely has a bit of sheen like my other watercolor soluble graphite pencils. Looking forward to experimenting and playing with this technique! Thank you ❤

Interesting! I do the same with a fountain pen and non permanent ink. I will definitely give it a try as I have one or two of these pencils somewhere in my supply.

Ahhhh the Graphite Aquarelle! I bought that set of 5 on a whim, and it turns out they’re such a beautiful material! I use them by themselves on monochrome watercolor paintings though - never tried them in combination with multicolored watercolors like you did. Your results are amazing… really really lovely, you used the darkness of the graphite really well! I’m impressed at how well it blends with the other colors. However, graphite is sort of shimmery and/or luminescent so I bet those pieces can only fully be experienced in person, as these subtleties tend to not photograph well. 😺 Come to think of it, Daniel Smith makes this Graphite Gray watercolor paint that is made with pigment PBk10 which is actual graphite powder. I never tried it but I bet it should look a lot like the Graphite Aquarelle… 🤔
