This week, an intrusion of magma was detected underneath a volcano in Portugal, causing its alert level to be raised. Elsewhere, a new shield volcano erupted in Asia within the nation of Vanuatu. And, in the Philippines, the Taal volcano erupted thrice during the last week. This video will discuss these stories and list the 49 volcanoes which are currently erupting around the planet.

I hope Taal doesn't go magmatic, and judging from her behavior in the past it looks like she won't go "big kaboom" - her bigger eruptions were preceded by as many as 42 earthquakes in a 24 hour period like in 2020, and her seismometers today sometimes pick up nothing at all. But she is very unpredictable, she might seemingly calm down and suddenly go kaboom, or have some sort of earthquake swarm and then no eruption at all. I wonder if this kind of behavior is common among flooded calderas or volcanoes with gigantic hydrothermal systems.

Hmm if Taal is putting out that much SO2 under the central lake there is a good possibility those "explosions" are just releases of the built up gasses at the bottom of the lake. You have talked about this happening with co2 in other lakes previously.
@HONGKELDONGKEL1888
@HONGKELDONGKEL1888 11 күн бұрын
For context Taal is emitting as much SO2 in a day as Mayon did in a week while pushing up magma last year- so much so that folks in the coastline towns like Talisay and San Nicolas can't even see Volcano Island due to VOG. And I agree- she has a big reserve of hot water and gases underneath - these steam explosions are likely just her letting off some pressure.

@@clarenceghammjr1326 I have, there are MANY comparing the volume of the atmosphere to 100km/62mi, but others include the exosphere which is at least up to the ISS, as we know it needs regular acceleration boosts from the slight drag of the rarefied but present atmosphere. I suppose just subtracting earth's volume from another sphere with a 10km larger radius would give me the gross volume. The issue is from there, I have no idea how that volume will then settle over the topography. The ocean basins are several miles below the continents surface at sea level so we need to both calculate the volune of the continent's and do another geometric comparison. However, my calculus is duller than a door knob, it's been two decades, and so far I'm unable to reasonably estimate the volume ocvupied by each comtinrnt, or even all as a whole would work. I suppose their listed square area x the elevation difference between the adjacent basins and sea gets me close, but there are HUGE areas of continental margin that are significantly shallower so yet more complex equations. I vivdly remember doing calculations for irregular shapes like like the area's of lakes, though TBH, I was really hoping someone else already thought all this out.

This is disingenuous. Though the island is _politically_ Portugal, it is quite clearly an island in the mid-Atlantic. An active volcano in a spreading centre is normally to be expected. Mainland Portugal, not so much.

According to your logic, Hawaii wouldn't be considered a part of the United States either. FYI, I grew up in a city in Southern California with a significant population of immigrants from the Azores, and they all proudly identify as Portuguese. Many of my friends' grandparents only speak Portuguese. Every year, the community comes together to host a Festa de Bola , featuring a soccer tournament, bullfights, and more. Can you believe that they host it at their community center that they named "The Portuguese Hall"?

@Bimmer_MD Hawaiii is _politically_ a part of the United States. It is _geologically_ a part of the Pacific Ocean spreading centre. Just as Iceland, Tristan da Cunha and all the islands in between are _geologically_ part of the Atlantic Ocean spreading centre. I have no argument about the pride of the islanders in being Portuguese, the pride of Hawaiians in being American, the pride of the Icelanders in being (not) Danish. I'm just talking about the geology of Continents and Oceans. Which existed long before Protugal was a thing.
