Can confirm: VR absolutely changes the flight experience, especially for Helos. Tip: You need very good and fine tail rotor control (and "throttle, the collective) to effectively fly a helo. That does not mean you need pedals. I use a thrustmaster warthog throttle setup: the right engine throttle is the collective. Very easy to get used to, it's natural. The left hand throttle is the pedals. Forward is right, backwards is left. Also easy to get used to, if you imagine you are pushig/pulling the nose in the required direction and you get fine control. This way you can actually contol collective and pedals with one hand. I don't fly with a head tracker anymore now that I have VR. You will need to get used to the lowerr resolution and have a beefy computer, but it's worth it. You are not sitting at a desk with the aircraft projected in front of you. You are IN the aircraft, it's all around you.

One difference is I swapped the TM stick base for a Virpil WarBRD. It allows much finer control than the Warthog stick base, which helps with small help movements, aerial refueling, and strafing. That made a big difference for me. The Delta Sim Electronics Warthog thumbstick is also a great improvement, but not quite that Virpil WarBRD base.

As an avid VR user I do admit its a struggle. I've always had bleeding edge equipment (currently 3090, waiting for 4090 w/G2) and the vr struggle is real. In 2D, I can crank all the DCS settings at 4k and the sim looks incredible. In VR, so many details are lost and it just doesn't look the same, but once you've flown in VR, the added realism and depth perception is almost impossible to ignore. Once you go VR its really hard to go back IMO. Personally, I prefer VR with graphics that look 4 years old than current graphics in 2D, but I can't honestly say that I don't drool when I watch replays in 2D with the graphics cranked. Dreaming of the setup that will allow both sometime in the near future lets hope.

I believe the maneuver is still called a hammerhead (stall turn) I fly always in VR, A2A I find more intuitive but tbh haven't flown enough with the TrackIR to get used to it in A2A. The only issues I have with VR is: - ground targets (level of detail),have a keybind to VR zoom helps for VID, - typing in chat, (discord and SRS helps); and - using the mouse but this load can be reduced with Voice commands. My VR headset/GPU is a Pimax 8k-Plus and a Radeon 6800XT - ( I ran the 2080Super for a long time as couldn't get a new gen GPU) The problem is ED has got to refresh their 3d engine - I get as good or better average FPS in MS2020 in VR than DCS.

@@peterweir3861 What you are asking about, is to adjust a X and Y output values. TL;DR: To make a grude analogy, think about limiting your car wheel turning only 180 degrees, so +/- 90. When you are driving normally on the roads, you are fine as turns are not so tight and you anyways do very small +/- 10 degree wheel rotations. But when you try to park your car, or you try to turn around on the road without reversing, you can't as you have no means to perform 2.5x wheel rotation capability, so your turning radius will be 3-4x of the possible you could without limiter. ---------------------------------------------- Firstly think about your joystick as 0-100% in both X and Y axis, where 50% is naturally the center. In X axis the 0% is full left and 100% is full right. In Y axis 0% is full aft, 100% full forward. No matter of your joystick length, that is full maximum input you can make to the computer. Now let's think that your joystick has a 30 degree deflection angle, so example X axis is +/- 15 degree, in total 30 degrees. That means your joystick gives 0% X axis at 15 degree to the left. And so on 7.5 degree to left would be 25% input. Now think about your joystick length, from the gimbal (zero, as it is the rotational point) to the trigger where you hold the index finger. Let's say it is 20 cm. When you rotate the joystick from left to right, you have 30 degree in total movement, 0-100% total input, but your index finger (trigger) will move let's say 8 cm in total. That means you have 4 cm movement to left and right from the center. That is your physical hand coordination requirement. If you have a mean to extend your joystick length from that 20 cm to something else, you will increase that physical movement range of your trigger. So if you extend your grip by 20 cm, as you go from 20 cm from gimbal to trigger, to 40 cm from gimbal to trigger, you have now 16 cm in total of physical hand coordination capability. You still have same 30 degree total angle, same 0-100% input, but to reach those maximums you need to move hand 2x more laterally. So now with extended joystick you have 100% input, but 2x more precision for your hand to make those small corrections. If you do not extend your joystick, but you will instead adjust the X and Y output values in each axis, what will happen is that you are cutting your output of your input by same amount. So if you set the resolution to 50%, you have on range scale available for you between 25-75%. You still move your joystick same full 30 degree total deflection, and you still have same 8 cm physical movement, but your input is only read as 50% of total output. It means, even if you tilt your joystick fully to right, then in the game virtual cockpit your virtual cyclic is never moving to right further than 50% of the range, so 75% position. So it is like "virtual extending joystick". That is OK if you fly in normal conditions, because normally your cyclic does not move much from the center to extreme physical ranges, but once you need that helicopter full authority for controls, you can't give it as you have cut off that by 50%. So example, you need to land in a side wind with heavier load and at higher altitude on something, and you would need to correct by giving full right cyclic, you are only capable input 75% position but not further, so it is not enough and you can't control what you are flying and likely crash.

When you think about it like this it'll make sense; With the helicopter, you're actively controlling 4 dimensions of motion: 1. Yolk - Pitch and Roll 2. FootPedals - Yaw / Rotation 3. Collective - Power. Now if you're using a keyboard like me, that's already all of your fingers, but now you have to worry about the: 4. MOUSE movement as well for perception and vision; This is where the VR really shines because it takes the need for management of one dimension of control away from your hands and gives it to your eyes which aren't actively controlling anything - for any game with realistic helicopters, you'd likely need VR.

I was wondering if you've tried the free Black Hawk helicopter yet? I downloaded it but haven't tried it yet, but they say it's a lot more stable than the Huey. I'm new to Helos and got the Apache for my first paid module. I was wondering, since I can't afford to get several sticks and mount am extension one one just for Helos and a regular stick for my jets if it works by adjusting the curves in Axis controls? I find the Apache to be really twitchy and I dialed up the curve to try and tame it, but I'm so bad, not sure I am doing something wrong, Lol!
@CommandT
@CommandT 2 жыл бұрын
Haven't tried the black hawk mod as I don't like aircraft mods really for lack of detail and features. We all use curves regardless. Even with an extension you still need curves. I mean you can still have fun without an extension of course but to have more precise control there is simply no way round it :(

@@CommandT I hear you about mod quality. I'm in the same boat. I did download the Blackhawk based on the rave reviews around the internet. I have to say, it is on par with official modules. And it lets you do one thing not offered anywhere else in DCS - AAR. Which is a good challenge and really fun. I think it would definitely be worth at least a download and take it for a quick spin.

See my post about pedals (you dont need them, just a fine axis for rudders somewhere - I use the L/H engine throttle for pedals on a thrstmaster warthog). Huey vs Apache. I would recommend the Huey first. Yes, the Apache is sexy, but the module is new and somewhat a work in progress; it will take a few years before it's done, just like the F-18. The Apache is not "fun" to fly. It's a fly by wire death machine with little "feel". Sorta like an F-18; the flying is done to bring the platform to the target, the real work is managing the weapons and targeting systems. I anticipate I will spend more time in the gunner's seat working the systems. There are no campaigns for it yet. The Huey is a basic fly by the seat of the pants helo, and it is fun to fly (but slooooooow). Once you get a handle on it, you can make it sit and talk. There are many campaigns for it, some very good, even a Vietnam-like one on the Mariana map. I enjoy my Huey, it's a great helo. I mean, how can you not own a Huey if you'rte going to fly helos?

Don't knock yourself- as far as a Huey pilot, I've seen worse. Just stick with it and you will get better. It takes practice. One thing that might help you improve your flying skills is ditching that Reverb and Warthog stick. Maybe consider the HTC Vive Pro 2. Like I said, stick with it- it gets easier. You should do another video after you've honed your skills a bit- you could reintroduce this video as kind of a "before and after" thing. Who knows, I might stumble across that one and watch it as well. Cheers!

I've tried and tried to mess with axis tuning and I just can't get it where I want it. Because of that I'm strictly a fast mover guy. Great content by the way, keep it up! I don't have any huey time but I've heard they are very stable. I mainly fly AS350's and EC135's currently and they're nowhere near as wobbly as DCS.
