Everyone needs a vacation from time to time. Pets often get put under the care of a friend, neighbour or pet boarding house, but what about plants? Some plants can last a long time without water, but other plants need weekly or even daily care. If you are going away for a trip, you need to ensure that your plants will receive enough water to survive your absence. Here are Some DIY ways worth Giving a Try.
1.Make Bottle Drip System
Make sure that the soil is completely damp. If the soil is too-dry, it will soak-up all the water from your bottle before you even leave for your trip. Having the soil already damp before you begin will ensure that the plant doesn't soak-up the water too fast.
Pierce several holes at the bottom and on the sides of a plastic bottle and bury it in the soil next to the plant, leaving the mouth of the bottle exposed.
Just before you Leave for the trip, fill the bottle with water to the top. The water will gradually drip into the soil keeping your plants happy.
2.Water plants with a wine bottle
Carefully pierce a few holes in a screw-top lid of an empty wine-bottle using a screwdriver or nail. Fill the bottle with water and then screw the lid back-on. Now bury it top side down in the soil - the water will drip through the holes slowly watering your plants.
3.Place saucers under pots.
Keep indoor and outdoor potted plants on a saucer so excess water is collected and reabsorbed.
4.Self-watering pot using string
Take a length of cotton string or cloth and push one end into the soil of your pot plant and the other end into a Gallon-size jar of water.
When the soil becomes dry water will be drawn through the string by the genius of capillary action, rehydrating the plant.
Position the jug so that it is out of direct sunlight; this will reduce the amount of evaporation, consider putting a piece of duct-tape over the mouth of the jug; be careful not to cover the string, this will help slow down the rate of evaporation.
Make sure that the mouth of the jug is above the base of the plant. If the jug is too low, put it on top of a book, a block, or an upturned pot to raise it up a little. This way, the water will be able to drip down the string.
The string must be able to hold-water. If it can't hold-water, this method won't work.
And 5. Time Share with Friends
Form a vacation watering co-op with one or more friends. Make arrangements to take-care of each other’s garden while away on vacation. You'll care for their plants while they're away and they'll care for yours, while you take off. Try and make it easier on them by keeping the hose-handy and ready to go and grouping as many plants together as you can.

I tried method #4 and went out of town for 3½ weeks. when I came home to my surprise my plants were as healthy as ever and both pitchers of water of both plants were bone dry but the cotton fiber was still damp. Great method, thanks!

We live in a very humid climate so we use the capillary string method but also use the water from the tank in our dehumidifier to feed the strings. We not only get our dehumidifier emptied but water the plants at the same time!

Well since I’m traveling for ten days, starting June 26, I wanted to experiment with this method. So I stopped at Lowes last night and picked up a pack of “Blue Hawk” Synthetic Clothesline (50’). Cut about 3 feet, attached a small rock at one end (to weigh it down) before wetting it. Then placed that end in a 1.36 gallon jug. Buried the other end in the plant soil. Twelve hours later, I inspected my handiwork and presto! the the rope was absorbed with water and the soil beneath it was moist!. This is great!

Method #4 forces the water to go down into the pots by gravity and therefore ends up drenching the plants and killing them by over watering and making them prone to fungus. Having the water level below the plants will encourage the plants to absorb the water it needs by capillary action and therefore will maintain good watering amounts.

i have an excellent way........i had very large potted bamboo in my windows........i was desperate and an idea popped into my head.....if the water cannot evaporate ,transpiration will be the only water loss..........i stuck all the pots in black garbage bags after watering and left for 2 weeks.when i came back wow...huge tall bamboo and when i looked inside the pots roots everywhere.....of course i had the foresight to cut big holes in the pots ......so then i was able to take root cuttings galore!

Yes if left to long iut would prob ably grow mould, but as long as its not left for to long this could possibly help form beneficial bacteria that work in harmony with the roots to absorb more nutrients better so can be a good plant treatment full stop. Not to mention as long as you dont shock the plant to much with cold, when you remove the bag, the roots are gonna love that boost of oxygen.

For method #4, do you need to pre-soak the string? I'm trying out method 4 currently before I leave for vacation later in the week, but it doesn't seem to be working. I set up the contraption two days ago, but the portion of the strings between the water and the dirt is still bone dry. Shouldn't the entire length of the string be moist/wet by now due to the capillary action? Or does the capillary action only start working once the soil becomes dry? My strings come from a replace-able mop top; I just cut a couple of strings from the mop top and use those. They look like natural fibers to me. I don't know if I should buy some new strings that are definitely cotton or maybe cut some strips out of an old bedsheet.

Are you keeping the water tub a bit higher than the pot you are trying to water??? I think this will not work unless it is higher than what you are watering. Much like and old fashioned siphon!
@AT-jm4dl
@AT-jm4dl 5 жыл бұрын
@@c6lites Yes, the water container was higher than the plants. I ended up cutting two strips from an old cotton T-shirt and used those instead. The capillary action worked immediately with the cotton strips, but the strips sucked up the water too much and too fast though. When I got back from my two weeks vacation, the water container was completely empty (it was a good sized container too); The cotton strips as well as the plant's dirts were bone dried. One of the plants, a maiden hair fern, was black and crispy, LOL.
