This was an excellent breakdown! As a lifelong German Football fan, Pauli has always been a likable club I’ve been aware of in passing, but it was really only when my team (Werder Bremen) was relegated that I became truly aware of them. I’ve loved seeing Jojo Eggestein come into his own for this team, as I’ve been astounded with his hard work for the last 8 years. Great to see a Bremen academy graduate have his best season in years!

This reminds me a lot of Fernando Diniz’s principles at Fluminense. Incredibly fluid with really unorthodox positioning in possession with a focus on overloading opponents without much regards to what positions players play or retaining a specific structure. Wonder if Fabian got some inspiration from what Diniz has been doing in Brazil.

The newest tactical transition: from positional play (Pep, Arteta, Xavi) to relationism. Think somebody already mentioned them but Fluminese under Diniz, Girona, Bologna, etc. all practice this. Unplanned overloads that spring up naturally based on the opposition's defensive structure and spacing

@@lukethmpsn A lot of managers use the themes of it. Ten Hag with Dalot making straight runs through defenses, Ange having Porro and Udogie making underlapping runs or late box crashes by Romero. Teams I mentioned base their entire attacks around it. Slow methodical buildup play that will randomly spring up 5/6 nearby players to overload a flank, leading to some fun combinations

I really like how you explain them, and make clear the difference between a high press and a counter-press. So often teams who counter-press are automatically assumed to be a pressing team, but as you've shown, that's just not true. By mixing a counter-press with a lower defensive block, St. Pauli essentially force the opposition to deal with different rhythms within a game and that's not so common within football right now.
@ItsCalledSoccer

You got it right. But you missed one point. Hürzeler is not alone with this concept. He copied it from an english coach. And Alonso, headcoach of Bayer Leverkusen did the same. And there is a third one, called Hoeness. He managed VfB Stuttgart, a team that nearly had gone down to second league last saison. Why i am telling this ? Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and Stuttgart finished in second place, right before the famous FC Bayern ! I am fan of FC Sankt Pauli and of Hürzeler, but he is not as outstanding as it seems. Sankt Pauli got a new record for winning games without even a draw in 2023. But Levekusen was unbeaten for a complete season, that was seen never before in history of Bundesliga.

I visited Hamburg last year for work, and absolutely fell in love with the neighborhood of St. Pauli and the club's ethos. Have been a fan ever since, and was delighted they went up this year. Was in Hamburg again during the VfL Onsabrück match, and unfortunately was unable to secure tickets.

And my favorite team is my hometown team, the Columbus Crew, and I see you just did a video on them too. Subscribed, and off to watch that one next.

Hire him as USMNT Coach!! This guy is the exact opposite of everything that is wrong about Gregg Berhalter! Maximizes player potential! Fluid structure to maximize both offensive AND defensive phases! Teaches awareness and use of space! Teaches set pieces - scoring and defending! Wow, this guy makes so much sense USSF will never hire him! More likely he'll be the next hottest young coach to hire after Xabi Alonso, and get snapped up by Bayern or BvB, or somebody in the EPL

Google total football. This is what this "tactic" is. Admittedly, it's not often used in the modern era, but saying you've never seen anything like it in 20 years means that you haven't been paying attention.

I think total football is not quite right. It’s a mix of that and a more modern interpretation called relationism. When I said I hadn’t seen a more connected team in 20 years I wasn’t talking about the tactic, I was talking about the team chemistry.
