I can recall when I was in high school here in Kenya more than a decade ago, some of my classmates were studying French Language. Some were studying German language as well. But honestly speaking, French language has failed to gather pace and become a widely spoken language in Kenya despite decades of presence in the country's education system as an optional subject. Instead, almost all Kenyans speak either Kiswahili or English or both probably because it is mandatory for all students to study English and Kiswahili in 8 years of primary school and a further 4 years of high school.
