my worst fall was off my new thoroughbred that looks like Joey and he refused the water jump and backed up and reared and I fell I got really winded and the pole cut my arm not that badly though I got up and back on and jumped every thing but the water jump and my trainer got on him to go over it and he nearly throw her off but got him over eventually but he is only 6. you are amazing and give me so much confidence to keep me riding without you I mite not have got as far as I have since that fall we have jumped 2,6 aka 76 cm I think. So thank you so much. Edit: I have neverd had a like on. a comment

I definitely find doing things until they're boring a great way to gain back confidence! I lost so much confidence a few months ago and found trotting terrifying at times, after a few months of going back to basics I'm almost looking for ways to go faster! :)

Like Charles Owens was for you I think you made me realise how bad my fall a few weeks ago actually was. At the time I shrugged it off after . But I now realise how much worse it could have been, I hit a metal jump stand head first and cut my leg on the bottom part of the wing . Luckily I was wearing a body protector and helmet so I avoided serious injury but was quite sore the day after with some bruising . Thank you Esme

Wow… hearing Esme talk about Joey’s behavior when he was younger and how it knocked her confidence honestly makes me feel better about my recent confidence knocks. The situation is even similar. I have a young horse (just turned five this month) who can be… spicy. He does have a tendency to buck going into the canter and when another horse canters past him. I really got in a little over my head getting such a young horse with so little experience (been riding for three years and I got him about a year and a half ago) but I love him and wouldn’t trade him for the world. And we’ve been making some progress recently so fewer bucks. *insert celebration here*

I was retraining a ‘brumby’ in Australia we call them that. But fully agree she near killed me but you get back on even if you’re hurt, or scared, or even thinking not worth it. BUT you never have too, you always have the option. But If you don’t get back on it, it near ruins your confidence. You’re putting out such a positive message for younger horse riders, regardless of what will or is going to happen. Huge respect ❤️ much love

I love listening to these while cleaning tack 💗, my funniest fall is probably once when I was hacking and there was a little log on the ground that I decided to jump, I jumped it fine but I forgot to duck after for an overhanging branch and I got whacked across the head and ended up clinging on to my horses bum before sliding off 😂😂

Her horse did the most car engine fart like it sounded like an aeroplane taking off, me and my horse were cantering and he spooked and bucked up. I ended up flying off and lying next to the wall. The funny thing is that my horse was supposed to be the safe brave one 😅my friends horse is the naughty scared pony! ❤❤❤

So inspiring! My funniest fall is, I was hacking on my friends pony and I had my body protector over my coat and it must’ve been loose because a tree branch got caught in my body protector and I just hung there for a few minuets! The pony I was riding freaked out and ran and the look of confusion on his face I don’t think I’ll ever forget it! Funny story for the dinner table tho 😂

I remember once someone in my lesson forgot to do up her girth and when she had our first group canter the saddle slipped onto the ponys tummy and she was under him! The stirrups obviously came away and she plonked onto the floor and it was a tiny pony so she was ok but was a bit scared of falling again, so my instructor said well, im the same thing here, the only thing ill be kissing this summer is the sand 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Luckily the pony was a good boy 😇 and stepped over her but I'm glad she had a good time jumping after ❤ The person was absolutely fine and got back on and jumped great 👍😃❤

Hey Esme! i love your shirt! Also, my worst fall was when i got bucked off because my horse reacted to my his horse neighbour cantering and rearing around his paddock, so obviously Toffee (my horse) had to copy. I fell and landed on my wrist 😅😅 what a lovely day. 😂 so i ended up in minor injuries, and then i got bucked off twice today for no reason 😊😂😂 Btw, you are so inspiring! Love you ❤

I live in Florida and at the end of May this year a just turned 16 year old young woman competing in an equestrian event finished a jump and two strides later the horse started to fall and his body fell on the young rider's head. She died very soon after. Good horse and good rider. Quite tragic.

Every year there is this big trail ride event that we go to. Last year I went with my dad and family friend. My dad and I borrowed horses, and our family friend (that I’ll call Abby) took her own horse. When we were tacking up we realized that we grabbed the wrong girth for my dads horse. My dad tried tightening it up as much as he could before we went off on the trail. The first bit of the trail went really well until we decided we wanted to have a little gallop. Abby was in front of me and my dad was behind me, so I was in the middle. We had a nice gallop for about 3 seconds before MY SADDLE STARTED SLIPPING OFF! I tried slowing my horse down but I was panicking so she wasn’t slowing down. I decided to jump off and grab the reins of my horse. Luckily, my horse stopped when I jumped off, but then I see my dad gallop past me (he was behind me the whole time). His saddle slipped off the right side and he just falls straight off. His foot got caught in the stirrup, but his horse did stop so he didn’t get dragged. Abby was way ahead of us and came back to see us both on the ground. She got off her horse and helped us put the saddles back up. We were all fine so we got back on and just walked for the rest of the ride 😬. love you, Esme ❤❤❤

I totally understand dealing with young horses can be stressful and tough but the reward is great! I was riding this five year old for a while and he has been under saddle for almost a full year, when I started riding him at canter he would buckle and kick at the start then every few strides would kick and but his head down. He is finally getting over it but it sure didn’t help my confidence or want to ride him any. I am so glad that you are more confident on Joey now!❤

That’s how my first fall went. I thought it was going to be a normal ride with a horse I was taking care of for another rider my coach was out of town. (She was always at the barn with me if I was riding) the horse I was riding had a bit of an attitude and loved to show it. (He bucks runs all of the things) and he was extra excited that day for some reason. (Mind you we had some traumatic stuff happen while my coach was gone so I was on edge) he bucked I fell off and I would have never thought this ride would had ended in the E.R. He is still one of my favorite horses to be around since he is a goofball at times! I’ve said this before but your videos helped so much and still do help with my confidence. I haven’t gotten back on him yet but I’m hoping to be back on him soon!

Hi Esme, I’m a huge fan! I have a funny falling off story, it was my first (and second) time falling off! I was riding a cheeky Norwegian Fjord Shetland pony cross in my lesson (that’s the first problem), so when I asked him to canter (I was still learning and really bouncy) and after a few strides he thrust his head down and I did a front flip off, being an unbalanced beginner at cantering! I was fine, and my mom got a video of it! 😂 Then I got back on right away and tried it again, only to have his strong neck pull me off the same way again! After that my instructor got on and tried, and he managed to unseat her the same way again, TWICE! 🤣 Then she taught that naughty pony that he can’t do that. But I stilled loved him!❤ The next week I did a show on him and won a 6th and 4th! He was fine at cantering after that I’m pretty sure, this was 2 years ago! That’s my funny fall-off story!

I have a little information about your pooping in the water story. Because of the water they need to loosen their back muscles more to step over the water, which makes it easier to poo. Which would also explain joey pooing in your instructors arena. Riding outside is a little more tense, when he relaxes he gets more room to do it! Might not be the case here, but thought it was interesting nonetheless 😄

I think sometimes we forget how dangerous this sport is. I broke 3 ribs after falling from a 13.2/3hh pony when I was younger, I was at a riding camp at my lesson barn and I was still pretty new to cantering of the lunge, basically I lost my balance and went out the side, the pony being well behaved stopped immediately which actually made the fall worse but I was proud of him. It took 2 weeks before I got an X-ray, I continued to do weekly lessons for those 2 weeks and then took a break to heal. I was on and off painkillers because I genuinely didn’t think I needed them up until we started training for cross country at school and I was in pain for well over an hour, I went to sick bay during break and had to go home for an x-ray. That was my worst fall to date but I was pretty lucky in the fact that I wasn’t too shaken up mentally from it.

I think having fear is just a part of riding. As are accidents & falls. As long as horse & rider are not badly hurt. When I was about 16 I had 2 classes back to back. The first class was a hunter class & the 2nd class was a western pleasure. I had so little time to make the changes that I took off for the show barn at a dead gallop. This of course was not allowed. I didn't notice that the huge garage style barn door at the end of the barn I was entering was not all the way open. The result was that I galloped head first into the lowered metal door. I was knocked backwards off of my horse while my horse fit under the door & kept going until he got to his stall door. When I got up I just ran for the stall & busied myself with my clothes & tack. It was only when I returned to the barn after the class & was taking the tack off to put away that I noticed my helmet sitting on a chair. There was an enormous crease--an indent--that went deep into the front of the helmet & all the way across from temple to temple. I was stunned. This was back in the day when helmets were covered in velvet & most of us didn't wear chin straps to keep them on. When I checked my head I noticed that I had a red crease across the top of my forehead where my hairline was. I was really lucky. I had a much greater appreciation of helmets after that.

This was so inspiring! Also, I have a funny horse riding fail: so I was riding a small pony at my old barn. We were trotting over a bounce jump (it was a cross rail) and everything was going fine. Then all of the sudden, the pony I was riding decided to refuse and I did a front flip over his neck, and I landed on the jump! Later, my instructor looked at the pole on the jump, and I had cracked it! It wasn’t that far to fall, though so I wasn’t hurt!

A fall I had was with a pony I was leasing. It was at a show and the mares name was Carolina and she was very sneaky and naughty. She was to smart and loved to fun out and drop her shoulder whenever she wanted. We where at an eventing comp and we where stating our XC run and at the 3 jump which was a ditch she spooked, dropped her shoulder and left me there, she started trotting of in the other direction with her head held high like she was proud. I got back on and finished the course with no problems as I was kid and fearless then so I just went on and cantered to the next jump.😂 We did schooling after and she was perfect even for the big jumps we where doing for practice. I loved her but sometimes she definitely was a little bratty. 😅

Hi Esme! So i once went on holiday and went to go see my friend! We went riding but it started pouring with rain so we waited till it cleared up! So it was sunny for like 10 mins so we quickly ran to get the horses! When we went to get the saddles the tack room was locked😆 So we rode bare back! Now the gelding i was riding wanted some grass now of course he just bends down and starts eating! i went Straight over his head and landed on my butt🤣 We both COULD NOT stop laughing!! One of my worst falls was I was riding a riding school pony and we were going down the long side of the arena and she slipped down on her knees and I came off her and hit my head off the wall of the arena but thankfully I had my riding hat on.

... my dad got me to ride his green-broke paint mare. She gave me the express lane into the ditch by dropping her head and lifting her butt. I was goofing off and didn't expect it 😂 my friends thought it was hilarious!

Very good advice, Esme, re helmets and safety :) FYI, I don't know if you follow any other equine people on KZfaq but Holly Lenahan, who is also a show jumper, has a really big younger horse, Dali, 17.2, homebred, that at 7 has finally finished growing and is a little slower than his brother (maybe more Joey's size) and she has been working on rideability with him using poles and varying strides: e.g. 2/2/2 strides and then switching to 3/3/3 and then 2/3/3 and then 3/2/3 and so on to help with adjustability when jumping a course (she got the exercises off a well-known rider, I just can't remember who right now). Also, her older boy, Khal, is an amazing jumper working toward Grand Prix and she describes him like you do with Joey as a little lazy, so she switched his food to a race horse brand that will give him more stamina during a course, but not make him hot generally. Anyway, some things to consider for you and Joey. FALLING STORY: When I was a really young (and very foolish) rider I was riding a pony without a saddle or a helmet and riding with friends, one with a full-size horse around the outside of a corn field. The bottom corner was very down hill and surrounded by a huge mud puddle. As we raced around the corner, I lost my balance and was laughing falling off, until I looked up and saw my friend's full-size horse jumping over me. He slipped in the mud and one of his feet came down on my thigh. (To this day, I remember how grateful I was it wasn't my head!) I went from laughing to terrified to a massive amount of pain and covered in thick mud. My friend knew I was in pain and tried to distract me by saying that she hoped our washing machine was working. It sounds really stupid (all of it) now, but her "joke" annoyed me so much, that I jumped back up on my pony and took off back for home. My leg was black and blue and then yellow for about a month. It was my thigh, and luckily not broken. And I had to be careful when changing or bathing that no one in my family saw my incredibly bruise leg because I probably would have been forbidden from riding because of it. And while I may have deserved being banned for being so stupid, I did not want to give up riding. I don't think I've ever told anyone this story and haven't thought about in 5 decades (my excuse, as we didn't hear about safety as much way back then). Anyway, that was my smarten up and wear a helmet riding story. Love your podcast and your videos :)
