I grew up in Sierra Madre, next to Pasadena, in the 1950s. Orange Grove Boulevard ran from Sierra Madre to the Pasadena (then Arroyo) Freeway. We would often drive along Orange Grove, passing the Gamble House, and then driving down “Millionaires’ Row”. Most of the great winter houses were still there, as luxury apartment building had just begun. It was enchanting. So few left, now. Sierra Madre also had a number of great homes, most still standing.

It's hard to imagine how spectacular Pasadena must have been at one time.

Love when architecture style is commensurate with the climate - like Merritt's Mansion.

Loved the sunken gardens; the reading room with the comfy rocker looked so normal, yet it was part of a vast home.

Do more Pasadena mansions. There was one that burned down in 2005, called the Max Busch house. It was built in 1929 for Jack Atkin. It has been featured in numerous movies and TV shows. It was most famously used in the Clue movie.

I couldn't agree more. 👍 The interior was a horrible mish mash of styles.

A lovely, livable interior, but I am concerned "heavily modified" means much of what we saw no longer exists.

Great video. It's also great that the house is still standing. I was getting ready to purchase that mansion until I saw the photo. A little too crowded now. Oh well!

As a child I attended a play of Sound of Music that was held in the front courtyard of this mansion at Ambassador College. I had no idea of its history until now. Thank you!

17,000 square feet!!! That is humongous. How does one live in a 17 thousand sq ft house ? How many children did the couple have? I bet they could roller skate from one end of the house to the other and still not bump into anything or anyone.

Your presentation was just amazing. I guess it's hard for us to think of these houses as homes. It seems that the developers just think of it as a space of land that could be better served. It's hard to say what they're thinking!😊

Who's the unidentified 1850s gent who pops up @1:20 ? Really, a beautiful house - but it's a good example of how hard they were to furnish attractively. Much of the furniture chosen seems irrelevant to the rooms they occupy. And, of course the place is so massive. Thanks for another excellent video!

It’s fantastic at 17,000 sq ft and an unbelievable amount of rugs, bric-brac, pictures, and furniture…those rooms were a blivet, 10 pounds of manure in a five pound bag. They definitely needed the rule, bring a new piece of furniture in, a piece in has to go out.

Hi Ken, question: At 0:46, you mention "Texas city" and I was wondering which Texas city you were talking about. There is a "Texas City, TX" but I would guess it's not what you are referring to in the video. Any clarification would be appreciated. Thank you!

TRUTH BE TOLD, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH IS LEFT OF IT, AND WHETHER TO SAY RESTORATION, DEMOLITION, PRESERVE AS IS, DECLARE A DEMOLITION FREE ZONE, OR WHAT???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe partly due to black & white photos but this place was way too dark for me. It would make an excellent funeral home, with just a perfect touch of creepy.

Lovely exterior. However, the ceilings are too low and the interior is too dark for my taste. Having said that, the interior does truly focus on family life.
