I am an Indonesian living overseas. While watching the replay, I immediately thought: "Oh no, the "medical team" WON'T know how to deal with this situation". And I was right. I am so sorry to the Chinese people. In Indonesia, we have the worst standards in Health and Safety... I think it is right to criticise the Indonesian government and all so that they know how terrible the organization is. The government website, for example, is full of bugs and errors. In some small public healthcare, the staff do not accept emergencies after hours because they want to go home. And lots of other ridiculous things. And yet all the people sitting in the parliament get all the luxury and money.

What a sad state for a medical team from Indonesia. What's more absurd is the BWF's two-step rule before attending to medical emergencies. I think in this case, everyone really had a hand in this. ----- CBA - Not performing necessary screenings to make sure athletes have no underlying heart condition. (Malaysia does! Two young prospects were possibly saved by this) BWF - Lax to no standardization of medic (and medical kit) requirements, no protocol for umps in case of emergencies, and worrying amount of mishaps in past World Tour events: Medics did not have tape for Tunjung, Beiwen had to give hers (Kumamoto 2023). Johannesen knee injury, Shi Yuqi had to be the one calling for the doctor (Singapore). Jonathan Christie falling off the wheelchair (France 2022). Adinata's knee injury, but had to bend knee for transport because they had no stretcher (Malaysia Masters 2023) BAC/PBSI - medical team is totally unprepared (no immediate CPR???), no AED, designated hospital too far away. ----- All of them, every single one of them, had a hand. They all have to sit down and realize what went wrong. Rewrite regulations. Make sure this is the last one.

The blame game starts. BWF would say the rules are for operational purpose and not cast in stone. The on-site medical team (including doctor), if experience and well equipped, can override the tournament Referee and proceed immediately to attend to the player. How much of the rules will change would affect all organizers and if it sways too much to one side, more will not want to be the organizer. In any tournament, regardless of sports, all athletes participate at their own risk. That is the dark side of all sports. With that said, we acknowledge the risks involved and pray that the venue/organizer does understand and provide "sufficient" medical assistance in time of need.

Does anyone have a clearer and longer video of the event? From what I can see from available footage, it was obvious that none of those people performed the basic assessment of ABC: airway, breathing, circulation. No one opened his airway. Was he breathing? As I don't see anyone giving him artificial breathing, he might still be breathing. But, when someone collapses, shouldn't you at least hook up oxygen even if he's still breathing? No one reached out to feel his carotid pulse. Was there pulse in the first place? Where's the AED? Is it not a requirement to have AEDs available on-site in such international tournament? They just squatted around him waiting for stretcher to arrive. Then they dumped him onto the stretcher and brought him to hospital, without protecting his airway! There is a reason why in ABC of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, A comes before B and C. If he was unconscious, why did they let him lie face up like that, without opening his airway? Allowing his tongue to fall back and occlude his airway? Allowing him to choke on his own saliva and vomitus? Why the rush to transfer him to a hospital before his condition is stabilized? The golden rule in CPR is to NEVER transfer any unconscious patient, until after you have stabilized him.

in an emergency situation, every second matters. 40 secs were enough for line judges, service judge, and umpire to start checking for pulse, breathing and if required, initiating CPR...instead of waiting for the medics.

This raises a huge concern in sports matches and facilities. The fact you have to wait for approval to perform life saving measures is a ridiculous rule. The medical staffs on site might be great people but they definitely were not prepared and were in panic mode wasting minutes.

One important factor for the sport men to note is that they should be well hydrated at ALL TIMES especially at games where their bodies are dehydrated from aggressive sports. A dehydrated body will cause the blood viscosity of a person to be high and thus may cause problems of cardiac arrest.

Yes according to the clip after the boy collapsed, a man; I think must be the coach was rushing into the court towards the boy, but the umpire sitting up there stopped him; so this man stopped in the midst n watched as he cud not not help the boy. So why didn't the umpire, at least come down n see what's happening. I wud think an umpire's job is not just to referee the game but also must not be oblivious to what is happening especially inside the very same court he/she is umpiring after all this umpire is in charge inside the court.

I don't know real situation on the field. But, i assume the medical team not used to handle rescue procedures on the field. either because of nervousness or lack of training. I did cardiac life support training for many time. But it will forgotten if you have very rare case or practice. Indonesia should more professional in many thing
