Stephen Gillen says he was the leader of a specialized four-person burglary gang carrying out robberies in the UK during the late ’80s and early ’90s. The gang targeted high-value homes and commercial properties, such as jewelry stores and designer-brand warehouses.
Gillen speaks to Insider about his experience in breaking into properties, the stolen-goods market, and home-security systems. Home invasions are on the rise globally. Recent high-profile examples include the robbery of Kim Kardashian in Paris and of the UK footballer Raheem Sterling during the 2022 World Cup.
Gillen claims he spent a total of 20 years in prison and was released in 2006. Nowadays, he is the CEO of the media-production agency Roar Media Creative Studio.

If you use intimidation or violence you're not a burglar - that's robbery. Here in the UK you don't get 17 years without using serious violence, this guy has obviously caused major trauma to his victims and if he's going to provide this kind of content he should have the decency to own up to the extent of that and not use euphemisms to minimise it. Some expression of remorse which went beyond the effect it had on his own life might also be appropriate. Whilst these videos are interesting they often walk a problematic line of glamorising or justifying the worst possible conduct and in this case I feel this one gets it wrong.

This guy knows the exact value of the goods he stole. He either stole nowhere near $5 million and is using the police's estimate to make his crime look bigger, or he stole way more than $5 million and doesn't want the police to know they haven't figured out the full extent of his crimes.

Maybe. Limitation period for litigation plays a huge role here. What he said about the tactics and indicators of potential targets could be said about him: if he talks about crimes not yet punished and within limitation period, he could be the target of the police again.

This guy clearly has no idea of the emotional trauma that burglary causes. Regardless of people being physically unhurt, the emotional trauma caused is indescribable, it never leaves you. Ever. It leaves you feeling violated, scared and unsafe in your own home, that you've worked hard for. The one place you should feel safe. Their one moment of selfishness makes you want to move away from the area, and your home where you've invested so much emotionally, and built your entire life. It makes you panic everywhere you go. Which in turn ruins other life experiences because you can't relax, or buy something nice, for fear of having it stolen. I've been burgled, and can tell you it affects you beyond belief, and for a LONG time after the event. It ruins the place you once called home. And burglars do this repeatedly, to many, many people. I despise burglars, and I despise this guy more so because he has no remorse. Sitting there in a designer tshirt.

Yeah this is an unusual one. I was waiting for the standard line of "I deeply regret what I did. Even though I never physically hurt someone, I caused a lot of very real trauma that I didn't realise at the time. Don't do this, there's no such thing as a victimless crime." But it never came. cuz who has an industrial kiln lying around?
@SentinelSays
@SentinelSays 4 ай бұрын
Probably because of logistics. Jewellery is the most commonly reunited stolen item if found by the police, because most people who have high value items have photographic evidence of it in detail for insurance purposes, so it is very identifiable as dodgy if found. Having enough gold to smelt down would mean holding onto it for long enough to get to that point, so the risk factor would be orders of magnitude higher. Higher risk, lower value. I’ve worked in a smelting centre for bullion (now long closed) and the amount of gold jewellery, gold dust and scraps from manufacturing held before it was melted was immense, and that was legitimate sources only. It costs a proverbial sh*t ton to run a smelter or kiln, so small loads mean zero profit, so it’s kept until the weight is high enough to assure a proper yield. If the metals were hokey, the risk of having it lay around for weeks when the police can spot check at any time looking for illegitimate metals (and they do) would be a major headache for everyone involved.

@notme1345 3 ай бұрын
@@SentinelSayscool story I brought my melting furnace of amazon £150 😂
@SentinelSays
@SentinelSays 3 ай бұрын
@@notme1345 But you can’t buy an industrial process for £150 that obscures the source and creates a throughput into legitimate trade; with enough safeguards in place to not put you at risk. Illegitimate precious metals have to be snuck into legitimate sources in order to hide its origins and gain sponsor assay grading. The plod finding you with a random melted bar of precious metal without verifiable marks or legit serial numbers, means they then need invoices, VAT sheets or receipts to prove where the raw materials came from. Smaller players tend to get cracked far more easily than larger ones. It’s been that way for a long time; plus you’re banking on a trader not shopping their dodgy metal suppliers in order to prevent them being raked over the coals if caught.

As soon as ANYONE points a weapon at me, I'm taking that as my life automatically being in danger and will effing destroy them the second the opportunity presents itself. People will say "It's just a robbery, give them your stuff, it's not worth fighting for and losing your life over", but that's not the point. The point is that I'm not doing some macho "Oh you wanna take my sh*t bro? N'uh uh, you ain't havin' any of it!" because I'm protecting my property, I'm doing it because I'm fighting for my life. Why? Because context means nothing in that regard. I don't care the reason why: the moment you threaten me with a weapon, you've done just that. And someone simply saying it's a robbery isn't going to get me to go: "A robbery? Well okay then, I trust this complete stranger with my life 100%. I mean sure, they're pointing a weapon at me but they just told me it's a robbery so that's why I'm okay with knowing that despite them pointing a weapon at me, they're not going to use it at all".
