The 24 Hours of Le Mans is arguably the world's best known automobile race. Run annually since 1923, it features motorsports' top drivers circling the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe over and over for 24 hours straight. It's a grueling and exhausting competition on one of the most dangerous racetracks around. We talked to 2016 winner Neel Jani who took us through each and every turn.

@@CheriptheRipper 2011 was an interesting year for audi. Alan mcnish's early massive crash, then dumais crashing the second audi in the middle of the night, leaving one audi to battle against the 3 Peugeots for the rest of the race was quite exciting to watch. The thing is though most 24 hour races have their own crazy story, like the daytona 24h that stands out I think it was also 2011,where ganassi racing went like 2 laps down at the beginning of The race to change a gearbox and then blitzed the rest of the race and won, or the insane corvette battle and photo finish at the end of the 2016 daytona 24h

@@CheriptheRipper 2018 was actually a lot of fun too despite it basically being Toyota vs Toyota. It seemed like the race was trending towards the No.8 car placing 2nd because they had a stop-go penalty and were over 2 minutes behind the No.7 car. Then Alonso and Nakajima pulled insane night stints closing the gap down to 40 seconds, bringing the car back into competition and eventually going on to win the race that year. I was a lot more entertained than I was expecting that year. There are many more historic moments, but that's a more recent one that I think will get underlooked a lot. For more drama, you could look at the Mercedes CLR flips.

They say that about Indianapolis as well, and Bathurst. Its a theme common to endurance racing, and a big reason why its so easy to get romantic about it. I endurance racing had a bigger following here in the states.

I'm not sure who messed up, but your discussion at 3:10 about flipping Mercedes is a bit misleading to say the least. The video footage showed the flip during the race, which happened after Mulsanne corner at the 2nd kink towards Indianapolis. Mark Webber flipped another Mercedes (actually his second flip) before the race during the warm up going at the small hill before Mulsanne corner, so that sounds like Jani referred to, just using the footage from crash of Peter Dumbreck during the race?

There is 4 classes. Lmp1 lmp2 and gt pro and gt am. Lmp1 has been replaced by le mans hyper car and Ldpi. Lot of people don't like the new Ldpi class and wish it was just le mans hyper car so can bring back more or less gt1 on steroids.

It's a multiclass race. The "road cars" are in the GT category, while the Prototypes have their own race.

Not really but since he was in the slipstream of the car in front and came up to that crest he didn't have any force to push him against the ground so the car just took off.

Now all BI need to do is to cover Monaco and Indianapolis (if they haven't), so they'll have covered all the venues of the Triple Crown of motorsport. Additionally, Spa and Bathurst would be great additions as well. Also, if you only discovered about Le Mans after watching Ford vs Ferrari, I have to say, welcome to the wonderful world of endurance racing. You've still got a lot of things to discover, study and appreciate about, so take your time 😉
