How Netflix's 'Extraction' Filmed A 12-Minute Fight Scene To Look Like One Take | Movies Insider

About halfway through Netflix's "Extraction," there is an action scene shot to look like one long, 12-minute take. To sell the illusion, Marvel stunt coordinator turned director Sam Hargrave strapped himself to the hood of a car to follow multiple car chases and then attached himself to a rope so he could capture a moment where two characters tumble off a balcony. Because there are no cuts, actor Chris Hemsworth had to do some of the most intense training of his career. Meanwhile, if you look closely, you might find the invisible cuts, or "stitches," that attach each shot of the sequence.

Cuts work if done right. Neo vs Morpheus, Neo vs Seraph, Luke vs. Vader in EpV, all fight scenes in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Captain America vs Winter Soldier's first fight, etc, etc. It's rapid cuts with shaky cam to pretend a lot is going on but doesn't really flow as a sequence that loses the audience.

Dude it's just a gimmick. It doesnt really serves the story that much. If anything it takes you out of the immersion. All I could think about when I saw this is ohh there was a transition and ohh there was one again. Where in Children of Men, it's much more subtle and not just for the sake of LETS DO IT IN ONE TAKE BECAUSE ITS COOL.

Botond Csizmadia it is cool, and that’s very important. Cinematography is important, and this is very clearly a sort of flexing of the cinematic muscles for this director, and I think it paid off. It looks incredible, and whether it means anything to the story or not is not the only important thing. Movies are visual, and making something difficult has its own value. Like shredding in guitar. Can it be overused? Absolutely. Can it be a crutch for having no substance? Absolutely. But it’s still impressive and, used properly, adds a ton to the overall work.

When Sam Hargrave strapped himself at car and using handheld camera to make it like continuous shot. It really reminded me to car chase scene in The Raid 2: Berandal. Gareth Evans used almost the same technique where he was holding camera at pick up car and hand it over to the crew inside car, and the crew inside that car hand the camera over again to the crew that attached outside the car. I knew some people will say that the technique that'd been used by Gareth Evans in The Raid 2 was pretty common and much shorter than the scene in this movie. But, at 2014, that technique really blew my mind. Not to mention they were shooting it at limited budget and time, so they have to finish that sequence in much shorter period of time and they still managed to capture it beautifully.

This is the best action movie I've seen in at least 20 years it was like watching The matrix for the first time or bad boys 2, I'm shocked I even discovered it because I think I've watched five things in my entire life on Netflix and thought I'd give this a shot and the first 10 seconds had me hooked and then I couldn't believe how good the rest of it was I'm probably going to watch it again

A true inspiration! ... I'm directing, writing, filming and producing a film myself. A 3 Episodic adventure actually, it's currently being filmed. In order to achieve my true vision, I always prefer to be behind the camera in any way possible! Believe it or not, I did the exact same maneuver! I lied down on the front hood/bonnet of the SUV that my brother was driving to get a great shot! We weren't driving that fast though. I can't wait to release it online. The Trailer will be uploaded on my channel by the end of this week!

You guys should look into the car chase scene in "The Raid Berandal" they had a cameraman dressed up as a car seat so that the camera could be passed from outside the car to the inside for a seamless transition. Some real ingenuity was used during that entire chase scene.
