Wouldn’t it make more sense if Chanel used leather for the lining instead of that flaky lining? I feel like for the price that we pay for these bags, we should expect higher quality materials. But thats just me. Great video!

@@beckyy584 not true, I have a vintage chanel bag over 20 years old and it had the flaking vinyl lining. I had the entire interior replaced with lambskin. The outside lambskin was in very good condition. The chain had oxidized so much it had to be replaced.

Costs is a big problem when it comes to restoring I've noticed, unless it's a cherished or favorite item, it's much easier to just buy a new one then to have it restored since restoration prices are about the same as getting a new one. (Of course it depends on the item and where you ask to get it restored, but that's mostly it.) Plus getting a new version of it is claimed to have been mostly a easier and quicker way to get the new item compared to a restorated piece. (Again depends, but point still stands.)

the reality is now, products get cheaper and easier to break than it was before. it cost way more to repair/restore things rather than just buy a same new item now. unless you have really expensive stuffs with excellent quality, mostly it's not worth the money and time to repair them.

repairing and restoring things to their original state is always a good thing no matter what it is ... well there is some things that can go. it goes against my grain as a human to spend $$ on items that are highly valued just because of the name that is on them or priced astronomically because of a name. but restoring items and not just tossing them to me is priceless.

great restoration! i feel like many people who own leather bags/luxury items dont actually maintain or clean them properly so they end up wearing down rather fast! in my opinion if you're paying a premium for a well made product then you definitely don't want to let it get to a state where it looks old and worn

If I learned anything from this video, it’s that I need to hire her. There’s so many steps that need to happen to make sure it’s done properly and there’s no way, I’m testing my rookie restoration skills on a $3,000 bag. I really hope the lining is genuine leather. While the lining hadn't deteriorated too badly yet, if it is faux leather it will continue to degrade underneath the paint. The faux leather material flakes off no matter how well it is cared for. Relining it in a satin of the same color would've been more practical, because those repairs will not sustain daily use

Great to see the care and attention taken. Makes me very surprised to see how she's working the chain links at 8:49 though. Should use two pairs of pliers and open and close chain links by wiping the edges past each other, not by moving the edges directly away and pressing together like she's done here. Her method stretches the link shape, often damages the metal because of the force used trying to close the gap, and will never get a snug closure so the chain is at added risk of breaking at that point.

Some people collect Chanel or any other famous brands not only for the luxury brand, but for also business I suppose. Such as this one, after a decade, it’s value has risen up to 70% its original value so maybe that’s another reason.

For the highest quality restorers they may charge about $200 roughly. This didn’t need much work done :)

I am afraid she is not really trained in restoration as a career. Lesson 1 would be take the rings off even if you believe you are being careful, you always risk scratching piece you are working on. I also felt this is someone who is more of an upscale leather repair person, who found a niche with expensive items. And that is great! Handcrafts are awesome and artisans should be recognized and valued. But a conservator/restorer is a different thing. Maybe whomever did this program did not researched properly the difference between one and the other. Refurbished is a good word. Restoration is not. A restorer would never add paints and sealants like that which could act on the object degrading it further in the future. Painting a piece of furniture is just painting, it is not "restoring". Not keeping in mind the aging of all of the chemicals used for filling, painting, sealing, goes against what a restorer does. So I basically have an issue with the title, not with the artisan. She does a good job in her line of work.

I actually liked this one. I tend to silently cry when I see repairs done by deconstructing and unstitching the bag completely, tearing out the lining, or even replacing the handles all together. I appreciated that she used a light airbrush of paint. If I were the customer, I personally would have asked for just cleaner and conditioner and only slight touches of paint on seams and lining. But, still a beautiful outcome nonetheless ❤

Meh…. I would have replaced the lining as the “repaired” lining looks awful, also… that hand stitching is wrong . A saddle stitch is preferred as it was the original stitch, it’s the stitch that Hermes uses.

You can get a 100% all round genuine leather bag, hand made with care and creativity that will quite literally last a lifetime if taken care of, for less than a quarter of the price you pay for expensive cheap rubbish made in a factory by a designer brand. Very nice work. Does the color glue the stitch to the leather?Some of the holes in the stitching are filled with color and some are not, creating an uneven line. I’m not saying this can really be dealt with in a way that doesn’t take forever. I use a slightly damp, super soft brush which helps. You are really good at this. Am I the only one that this bothers?

As a reviewer that I have seen these type of purses that many them have the seal of the company that can't be destroyed . What I see of this process is that it takes more of the color out and destroys the stitching that the stitching is by machine and by hand . With any type of fine leather you have to use cleaners that are conditioned for leather or suede bags. The use of water to any type of bags will sink in further and cause the insides to mold .

So, please know that I /know/ you're being hyperbolic but it kind of bums me out to see someone being so cavalier about the labour (as well as the craftsmanship) that goes into items like this. I'm not going to pretend I know anything about this specific bag, but if it IS an authentic Chanel bag, it was made in either France or Italy. In general, leather goods, especially designer leather goods, and especially something like a handbag, can't be made in a sweatshop in the way you seem to be picturing it, they require detailed and painstaking craftsmanship that just wouldn't be feasible at the kind of speed required in that environment. Plus, the materials alone would cost a lot more than $10, leather isn't cheap. But more importantly, even if it WERE made in a sweatshop, this would still represent hours of someone's dedicated labour, including a lot of hand-stitching. That person would deserve to be paid an appropriate wage. Even if this were a random bag and the seller had somehow paid $10 for it, that would in fact be a massive undervaluing of its actual worth in materials and labour. Obviously it's still been marked up tremendously, but it's worth acknowledging the fact that our idea of the worth of textiles and craftsmanship has been completely skewed by fast fashion. Even the cheapest of textiles are not actually cheap, they're just exploitative.
