Today's guest is Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen.
Frances Haugen is a specialist in algorithmic product management and has worked on algorithms at Google, Pinterest, Yelp, and Facebook. She led the Product Manager on the Civic Misinformation team, which dealt with issues related to democracy and misinformation, and later worked on counter-espionage.
Alarmed by practices at Facebook, she blew the whistle by providing the Wall Street Journal a series of internal documents that became the source of a series of articles called FACEBOOK FILES. She has testified in front of the US Congress, UK and EU Parliaments, the French Senate, and the National Assembly.
She recounts the story in her book, The Power of One: How I Found the Strength to Tell the Truth and Why I Blew the Whistle on Facebook

I NEVER ever joined up on those channels I still am with AOL 😊 kind of shows my age ( HaHa) but I never wanted those sites coming back at me. I wanted to be a ghost 👻. But you say I did have AOL. I needed something. But I knew there was a big problem with these sites after I watched about Zuckerberg history and how some of these channels were copying the college hook up computer stuff. Zuckerberg ripped off the other guys in college making the sites to meet and date other college students. I thought from the beginning that the basics of all these sites were for bad things. It never hurt me by Never having an account on them. But I saw so many people get hammered after let's say the HR department looks at your web sites, and just what you said in words alone. Or the big one the picture you posted. People do selfies all the time and say to the dark web look at me I'm not home, just open the door for people to go after your personal property because you want to get your selfie out from across the Nation.

My moronic point of view I once had a discussion around the initial data sets used to create the first algorithms for targeted ad spaces. It essentially broke down to the engineers using the most active users data's to create the initial models, however, the users data sets potentially could've been bad to use because while extremely active online (lots of data points to model off of) these people suffer from a host of untreated mental health issues. This wasn't by anyone's grand design, nefarious motives, etc... It just sort of happened when no one stepped back to consider the bigger picture... What sort of unforeseen impacts could algorithms have if they are designed using errant and aberrant information sets?

I watched flights from south America go to the Amizon fulfillment center closest place. Was told the center had a thing going on there. No American Citizens could get a low level job there. They changed their employees back and forth every month or so without people from the United States having jobs. This is crashing our country.

Facebook seized my personal page AND debit cards in my messenger, AND closed down a side page with over 2500 subscribers. This happened basically bc I supported Republican candidates and refused to be vaccinated. 😡 I made a new page but (like you said) only to keep up with family. Is there really NOT an opportunity for you to start a better form of social media??? My biggest problem with conservatives is that they're too conservative. Why doesn't some smart young person START A BETTER APP? Young people can gripe and complain but WHY don't they ever do anything but fight? 🙄

What is amazing - if you view data in relation to surface layers: Each layer has its own surface this interaction / manipulation / monetization etc that you can scrape very granular data from each surface. You can template Death Star globs of granular data - parsing / correlations / more data ingested more refined outputs/outcomes/enriched you have improved layers / surfaces within the stack You now have a collection deck surface / intelligence apparatus surface / etc if your responsibility is just keep each surface clean or keep it orderly 🤷🏽‍♂️

Worked as a contractor in data centers that stored/managed data for Fortune 100, federal gov., and financial institutions. Very interesting overall. Biometrics, dual authentication (card & pin), logs, lists etc. and that is the digital security, and doesn't account for the physical side. I'm unsure of FB's security design and implementation, but once you are established within the DC it seems less enigmatic. Albeit my whereabouts was known and recorded at almost every moment.

As a retired nurse I had to un🔌 FB in early 2020 as I was told that speaking the truth was suddenly a violation and If I didn't stop trying to help people I would be deactivated, so I just volunteered to deactivate myself. I came here and was greeted the exact same way. Since then every word I type is being relentlessly monitored and over 90% is auto-removed. Anyone that is in service of Humanity's Highest Good is suddenly made invisible. 😔 The most valuable human hands are being tied and as long as subscribers continue to condone those controlling systems, they will get what they deserve. Ignorance is NOT bliss, it is bleak. 😴💤🙈🙉··⌛⏰!!

Bill gates did something very similar using nerd/hackers/free programing code shared amongst the community. Put it together in a symphony of load and linked operations....called it DOS. Sold it it to IBM for a million and never looked back. Of course the wizards who actually wrote the code no longer had a right to use it whole or in part once he "patented" it. That's why GNU Linux and public domain protected code was created, to fight the corperate pirates. Ok for them (and gov and bankers) but not for you!

Ms. Haugen makes a great point of those bowling leagues, Elks Lodges, VFW/ American Legion has dwindled. However, those that continue to do those leagues or be apart are the older generations, but there are surely a small part of the younger generation wanting to continue to be apart and carry those traditions. Facebook and those online platforms, plus adding the socioeconomics that plague our society and controls or influences how our current and future generations adapt to be glued to these platforms to follow agendas to conform to ideologies that are twisted. But, there is great news, since we do have others within this generation that want to be apart of those traditions. Of course, Ms. Haugen does bring up cost, but it is those who want to continue on with the American dream, to be apart of like minded people, to enjoy the company of people who care about others, and not to tear apart one another. Sometimes, the money we spend goes to better each others livelihood and for that is sacrifice for one another. Right now, the generation that is growing up has many platforms and for some are not thinking for themselves, but being pushed an agenda that is misguided. This entire post was about bringing people together and to better the country as a whole; not to tear it apart and be misdirected. I really wish that Mr. Zuckerberg would come clean, but people who use Facebook or Meta, whatever you want to call it can see the issues that plague that platform from restrictions of Freedome of Speech to children being mislead into horrible situations and everything else in between. It is completely exhausting, frustrating, and despicable to see what is going on in this country, and it is up to Whistleblowers and people who have authority to make these changes quick, fast, and with a purpose. Thank you for those who have the balls to stand up to this crap.

Since you were in multiple countries over the years, saw the 'average joe' population, your awareness of global median intelligence is a heavy weight to carry. Why is increasing user interaction by 1% at the cost of increased user anxiety considered a positive outcome? Wouldn't that increased interaction be short-term with a larger decrease of user interaction over time? I doubt all the smart people of Facebook dont understand longterm objectives and ensuring they have a higher increased user interaction over the lifetime of the users would be a priority.
