Phily Bowden is an elite runner and marathoner who recently ran a superb gun time of 2:34:30 at Seville Marathon in Spain. After our conversation on the JOG ON podcast (link below), I agreed to take Phily to her very first parkrun. We chose Reading parkrun, held at Thames Valley Park.
Thank you to Reading parkrun and Phily, if you like what we create, check out some of our other videos and you can always find more out about JOG ON at: www.thisisjogon.com

A dog running 3 miles dragging someone is not good for most breeds especially if over 5 years old... i do not know running but i know dogs.

@@anyexpat It's the dogs own choice to drag it's owner around 5km. Dogs do eventually die like all other living things.
@jeffkane5809
@jeffkane5809 2 жыл бұрын
@@anyexpat I've heard this from others, with as little to back it up as you give. What are "most breeds"? Pretty much all sporting dogs, working dogs and hounds are literally bred to be active and runners. One of the biggest health and behavioural issues they have is not ENOUGH running. Even terriers can easily work up to 5k, again probably not getting enough exercise in general. Only toy dogs are obviously unsuitable, but I doubt anyone tries running a 5km with a chihuahua. Do you really think all the health advice around exercise that is true for humans suddenly is not true for dogs? Even though most breeds have been bred specifically for their exercise capabilities? I think the only real question is how a fat unhealthy dog can be safely built up to doing a norm easy distance like a 5km. Any healthy dog should be able to do a 5km (and I include toys here - they are not healthy dogs, and are riddled with genetics and physiological issues that contribute to them being unsuitable for running)
@warp9wb
@warp9wb 2 жыл бұрын
If you think about it, 20min 5k is actually slower than her Seville Marathon time pace. So she was running at a pace slower than her marathon pace for the 5K. Its crazy what these elites can do.

She really is elite. And I guess the real insight is her positive attitude and happy nature. I'm not trying to be dismissive of her determination and skill. But it strikes me that it just makes it easier if you can hold onto that kind of spirit while you run. That's what struck me.

Anyone who is elite at any sport makes it look effortless. Phily was gliding along like a catamaran skimming over the waves. I am a big guy from weights and yes I can run 5K but I am more like a battleship ploughing through the sea, it's a massive effort for big guys to run distance. Well done Sir!

That pace was almost 30s slower than her marathon pace, so barely above her aerobic threshold at best (beginning of zone 3) and she ran like that for less than 20min. From a marathon training perspective, that parkrun could have qualified as warm-up before an interval session so it's no wonder her watch (which intimately knows her zones 😏) mistook that race for a trash session 😂

Your point about longer runs in the warmup is so true. I get to parkrun by train and the nearest train station to my local parkrun is about a mile away. ideal warm ups get longer as the race gets shorter in my experience. 500m for marathon, 4k for HM, 5-6k for 10k and 5k. I inadvertently ran a hilly 8k before a parkrun last year and got a massive PB.

A really interesting point Alex, there is definitely a fear of fatigue before a race that can put people off running much. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts

Another gem Harry. Given you were running along the Thames I couldn't help wondering what J.K. Jerome (of Three Men in a Boat fame) would have made of parkrun. I think he, George and Harris would have regarded fitting one run in as a must do part of their adventure, and their Garmin data would have been discussed at great length. . as for Phily's "Unproductive": I've just had five in a row. It's depressing.

Unfortunately Harry & Philly caught us at Reading on a week with still muddy conditions after some downpours. That’s the price you pay for running next to the Thames. Conversely this week just gone, much firmer & we had 65 PBs!!

Trying to get my running mojo back after 3 months with post covid fatigue. 5km below 30 min is my first target, then hopefully back up to 50min 10km. but at 58, getting there will be a struggle. Still this video has got me out of bed and off to the gym so cheers for that!!

I'm 57 Richard and a long way from completing a 5 km thanks to long term lung damage from covid. However your sub 30 minute goal has inspired me to get back out there and aim for a sub 45. Thanks for the idea, just having a goal is a huge inspiration.
@richardhunter7363
@richardhunter7363 2 жыл бұрын
@@bone0944 good on you. I tend to run on running machines at a gym (better for the knees and more control over the speed etc.) I set myself a primary goal and a stretched and double stretched goal - happy to get to the primary, even happier if I get further. I'll then use that goal until I have met it 3 times in a row - then I'll set another goal a bit more difficult. So if you are wanting to run the whole 5km, set a goal (say 2km at a known speed, 2.25km stretch, 2.5km double stretch) - when you can do that then you can either increase the distance before slowing or increase the speed at which you run it.) I like to use the running machine as I have more control over the speed as well - I'll set it at the start and then increase it at fixed intervals - this tends to be good as that first km can be a killer but I find my lungs open up as I run. When I'm feeling happy that I can do the 5km, post covid without needing to slow down, I'll start to increase the distance goals until I can get back to the 10km mark. I have also plotted my progress before in Excel and that way you can see your progress

Excellent fun. My 5k time is 35 minutes. Though I am 67 and I was never a good runner. I've run on trails and parks but never with other people. And thats 40 years now 3 times a week. Running in the rain and light snow is soooo good. Though here in sydney the summer is more like 27 plus degrees.
