I wanted to try and take a person who doesn’t run at all to their very first 5K, in the form of a parkrun. To make this even more difficult, I would have just 4 weeks in which to achieve this.
The chosen participant, Ami, would be testing out an abbreviated version of the new JOG ON training plan. Much more than just couch to 5K, this is A 6 week programme carefully put together over many months and specifically designed to take someone from no running and train them to run a 5K: www.thisisjogon.com/shop
This video will form part of a trilogy, documenting a remarkable 4 weeks with Ami.

I find it amazing how fast you can pick up running, I never had intentions of running, couldn’t run a mile to save my life. Just finished my first half marathon in 2:00:38. The thought of running for 2 hours straight was just unfathomable to me just 2 or 3 months ago! Great video

As a new (again) runner, I found logging and charting my runs to be incredibly motivational, in the absence of any outside support. It keeps me eager for more, knowing that not only have I logged all those miles but today I'm 40 runs in, and 61% faster than when I started keeping track.

ok my story is...i was a smoker for 44 years, gave up last day of April 2023. i started running end of December to cut a long story short, i can now run 5k under 30mins...my PR is 29:10 very soon to be in the 28 mins mark, i must also add that it took me 2 and half months till i could run 5k without a walk in between the running/jogging ...i love the Perth park run, we have amazing volunteers like i guess all the park runs have. Watching this and other jog on videos, oh how i wish i found you a few months ago, oh i`m 60 in August and this running malarkey has taken over my life, even after a 12 hour shift i can wait to get home, changed, and out the door...every second day anyway :) top respect to you and all the runners, Paul #Happy Days#

Getting up and getting started is essentially the hardest part. Its such a drastic change from your current status quo and then the mental hurdle of seeing where you truly are vs where you thought you were physically and then what kind of commitment it might take to get where you want to be. It can be overwhelming. Step 1: Get up do anything to start step 2: be consistent with your activity step 3: Be patient both with yourself and your results

Projects like this one are so inspirational. The effort required from being a non-runner to 5k is massive. I just got back to running couple of months ago and can run for 2 hrs without stopping but if I had a choice to let's say train for marathon or go back to being a non runner and start from scratch I would rather do marathon training tbh. The initial push that is required when you're beginner is huge and often people give up. It's important to teach people HOW to start running and the importance of running slow to run fast approach.

Great video, may I ask - where the training days alternated? One day off one day on ?

Great question, it varied per week. Ideally we tried to have a structure like the one you mention, but due to time constraints, it wasn't always the case. The goal was running on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Hope that you enjoy Part 2 when it arrives.

@@thisisjogon Really enjoyed this video. Thank you for confirming, I also commented recently about the place you did the second run, Alice Holt, really nice place to run. I will use this plan to kick start my running.

Hi I’ve asked before but I don’t think I got a response I’m an U13 and I’ve just been selected for the London Mini Marathon and I’m a lot better on track so I was wondering if you have any advice going into cross country/ road racing

I would say speak to a coach Daniel, and do your own research for what works for you. We wish you all the best with your running. Keep it up!

I signed up with my daughter for 5k but i only have about 2.5 weeks, well less than 1 now. I only manage to run 2.5 miles in about 35 mins. Ugh!

Trying it and not quite succeeding is still a much bigger achievement than not trying at all! The only true failure is when you don’t push yourself to grow.

Ami looks quite young. I believe this is too much for me as a 57 year old 40 pound overweigt person. Is there something more realistic for my age and weight

It would just be an extended version of this. The actual training plan is 6 weeks, which is reasonable if you listen to your body and take it very slowly. Even if it meant run walking the 5K and slowly doing less walking over time
