I think the benefit is theoretically they can start to build on top of it on the same day, with the sonotubes you have to wait until it cures, which is 3 days... so that can be a HUGE savings.

If they would have used an excavator with a smooth-edged bucket (no teeth), they could have saved themselves some manual digging too (important when you have 11 to do). Didn't appear it was particularly hard soil, so no need for a bucket with teeth.

What is the admixture? How do you prevent honeycomb? Footing finishing is good your work area housekeeping is good. Send more videos.

Ha, maybe if you are one of those HGTV shows where you gut and rebuild a house for the big reveal in three days. Love the option, but just doesn't make sense except for the fact it was probably sponsored materials.

No way that saves time over using a hole machine and filling it with concrete from a truck. Maybe two or four of them for a deck, but eleven of them for an addition?

I can't see how this is any faster, cheaper, or stronger than simple sonotubes in a hole. Even if the sonotube isn't tapered, thus using a bit more concrete - once you have the truck there, a bit more concrete isn't much more. And 4000 PSI isn't a particularly expensive mix.

Heard that OSHA is cracking down on dust. They are going to make you use a shop vac to collect dust while drilling holes in concrete. Good ideal even if one wears the proper respirator.

I want to know the thoughts of the This Old House Team about the Extreme Home Make Over shows? I wonder there was a home that I saw built and the foundation didn't look like this? It was a totally flat slap of cement? It would be nice to get each member of the team's thoughts on how and what they thought good and bad about how they built these homes?

No kidding. Why not auger + sonotubes and pour on-site? The precast leveling and assume backfill, how do they not move around?

Never lived in that kind of climate, but you really need to go that deep with footings like that for a deck? Or is this just massive overkill?

Yes, the bottom needs to be below the frost line, so the freeze/thaw cycles don't lift the footings.

In Wisconsin we need to go 4 feet deep, even for decks. The hole goes a bit deeper for the stone base below the forms.

5-6ft deep is very common in Canada. If the deck is not attached to the house it doesn't matter to much but if it is attached and doesn't have the right depth its going to start pulling on the house.

This is insane really. Just auger to the depth to undisturbed soil, bell out the bottom and pour it in sonotubes. This overdig is completely unnecessary.
